Exclamation Raps Cannot Trade Their 1st Round Pick Outright

Interesting .... I didn't know this. So any deal that the Raps might have in place that include our #17, we'd be drafting for that respective team and the player they covet. Did you guys know this?

Should be interesting to see how this all shakes out. Whether THIS deal ends up happening or not remains to be seen … but there’s no doubt that Bryan Colangelo and the Raps are very active in the trade market.

That is correct, they can't trade their 1st round pick two years in a row but theres no rule against them selecting the guy the Pacers want with the pick and then pulling the trigger on the trade.
ok - so that means that we can't trade for O'Neal until AFTER the draft?

It means they can't trade for O'Neal until after the Raptors make the 17th overall selection.

No problem. Its a topic that deserves to be addressed in its own thread. I think a lot of people don't realize this rule.

I didn't realize that at all. Will definitely make things interesting and if any deal does go down on draft night involving the #17, I know not to expect it before we select it.

hmmmm, this can be very interesting.... if a big name slips in the draft order, that pick will be very attractive and the phones will be ringing off the hook.... i hope 5 minutes is enough time for BC to cycle thru the offers.

I wonder if we're allowed to swap #1 picks with another team. I would think we should be - after all, we still end up with a first round pick.

I think the rule is that you can't place your team in a position where it has no draft pick two years in a row. If thats correct then swapping 1st rounders in the same draft is allowed.

one other implications is that ANY deal involving trading our pick cannot be made until after the draft. Which means that for all we know, the JO trade was already agreed and they're just throwing dust until tomorrow. I think it makes sense because the excuse they give now is kind of childish. I mean it's not like they just learned that JO and TJ have injury concerns ... They already knew that before they began talks.

Also, I'm not sure about Indiana, but for us, from all the scenarios I've heard, this one makes the most sense.
