Well, duh...

Quote:
But in order to move up in the standings—to extricate themselves from the annual race of the mediocre that the franchise has been in for years—the club needs to add a veteran capable of directing traffic on defence. The club now has enough offence—as was proven when the Raptors beat the Denver Nuggets, an elite offensive club, in a game that was all about offence. Neither team could slow the other down and it was inevitable the result would come down to the final possession—and Gay won it with a last second bucket. Defensively this team still needs an anchor. In the years to come the club is counting on Jonas Valanciunas to be that guy—but he is quite some time away from being able to assume that role.

So how do the Raptors go about filling that role? The easiest way would be via trade. However the only contract worthy of bringing back a quality veteran belongs to Andrea Bargnani. At this point in the season however the former franchise star has not played to a standard that could induce another club to acquire him unless that club is looking to part ways with their own heavy contract. That is why the rumours began surrounding the Lakers and Pau Gasol and have recently included the Bulls and Carlos Boozer. Gasol is injured and out for a couple of months—which eliminates any ambition to acquire him though he would have been the perfect fit (perhaps this off-season may be the time, depending on if Dwight Howard stays with L.A.) and Boozer is just too expensive and is an offensive threat but a defensive liability (not someone needed by the Raptors). Atlanta has made it apparent that they are willing to move Josh Smith but again Smith is not the right fit in Toronto.

So where do they go? The Raptors need that interior presence on defence. Where do they go to get him? And can they get him before the Feb. 21 trade deadline? The likelihood is that they will not add him this year, and the team you see right now is the team that will finish the season. And that means with the addition of Gay more wins will be earned but not nearly enough to get into playoff contention. The projection is that 38 wins will be needed to get into the eighth and final playoff spot (and the opportunity to be swept in the first round by the Miami Heat).

Can the Raptors win 18 of the final 30 games to accomplish this feat? Not likely. That leaves the off-season for the Raptors to fill that hole, and that role. With Bryan Colangelo’s contract expiring at the end of the season it is still unknown who will be making the decisions come the summer. The probability is that Colangelo will have his contract extended for two more years—the new owners see that the team is on the upswing and will want to give the Raptors GM an opportunity to complete his makeover.

Colangelo’s primary responsibility will be to find that interior presence and any deal will likely include Bargnani, who desperately needs a change of scenery—for himself and for Raptor fans.

The trade for Gay has now placed the Raptors on the verge of being a playoff club. Will Colangelo be able to make the move needed to get the team into the top eight of the conference? We shall see.

That would be an ideal pickup... but he's an UFA... and I don't see much that the Bucks would want from us other maybe Ross since he's a young guard prospect.

Agreed. I think that Jonas is solid enough to keep the starting job at C. He'll learn what he has to on the job.

Amir would be ideal playing 30 min/gm off the bench backing up the C and PF spots.

Not sure... I think a Gortat/Pekovic type would be awesome.

How so?

Amir's doing everything a starting PF needs to do. He defends well and can score if left open. In the future I think we will need a starter but a center is more important for us at the moment. Jonas is still a bit inconsistent and not strong enough yet.

Ok, Bargs is traded for a center. Who backs up Amir at PF......ACY? Right now we have 3 players that can play Center. Take Bargnani off this team we have 1.5 true PF's and Acy is even undersized a little for that position.

Get a veteran PF and you have:

Vet/ Amir/ Acy
Val/ Amir/ Gray

^ And if you want you can look for another depth Center at the vet minimum. But next season you're going to want Valanciunas probably playing 30mpg. Why waste a Bargnani trade on a backup Center who may play 10-15mpg? Expand the deal (add AA or ??), get a bonafied PF and then you've got a legit starting 5. IMO Amir is the perfect first big off the bench on a playoff team, he brings energy/rebounding and upgrades our depth greatly.

This is what i'd like to see:

Lowry/Vet/JL3
DD/Ross/Fields
Gay/Fields/AA?
Trade/Amir/Acy
Val/Amir/Gray

^Depth at every position, but true starters (depending who you get at PF) and everyone knowing their roles. And Amir still gets 28 or so mpg.

I've thrown out this idea before to people... as crazy as it sounds what about a Howard for Bargnani deal? Both players need a change of scenery (same age, both 27). It would obviously be risky for the Lakers but maybe Bargnani could go back to how he played a few years back and rekindle some of that passion. and to answer the other question i definitly think they need a good PF, C is saturated at the moment.

you know what would be really crazy? Bargnani for Lebron. I realize that it's a bit risky, because Lebron is not a true 4 and may be abused by some power forwards, but given his overall impact, I think it would be worth the risk. And Miami is saturated with 3s, they have lewis, jones, miller, maybe even wade ...

get it done BC
