R.I.P "Salami & Cheese"

You'll all be happy to know that the "Chuckisms" died here in Toronto. Bulls fans won't have the pleasure of listening to Chuck's favourite sayings. :face4:

Chuck: Thank you for the support Toronto gave me the past ten years. I love the city and the spirit of the fans for sure. The "Chuckisms" will stay in Toronto. The fans in Chicago will get an enthusiastic call—a straight call—and I look forward working with Bill Wennington. Sitting along side Jack Armstrong and Leo Rautins was a pleasure. Two very good analysts. I'm glad to see both guys will be staying around after receiving new contracts.

Sucks for Chicago.I'll miss those Chuckisms big time.So far from what i've seen Matt Devlin seems dull, but i guess we'll see how he does come October.

Chuck Swirsky is a class act.

Dull? ... what's he done that would consider him as dull? He's been here only a couple weeks so far. Were you expecting him to do magic or interview Jermaine wearing a chicken suit during the JO press conference? :confused2:

Anyhow, I've been speaking to Matt recently via email and the man is busy as can be right now. We haven't heard from him alot most likely because he's still transitioning & coordinating his move with his family here to Toronto so I'm sure some of you can appreciate the time its takes to make such plans. Also he told me that he's trying to tie up some loose ends before he heads to Beijing. He'll be covering the basketball games for NBC next month. So it will give us all an opportunity to listen to Matt. Pretty good gig. :)

Anyhow, Matt has also visited and checked out RF and passed along his compliments towards the site yesterday, so hopefully we'll hear more from him in the future here at RF. :)

cue 'trane's anti-swirsky rant in 3...2...1...

i truly can't believe that anyone will miss the chuckisms. i was so desperate to be rid of them last year i actually cheered - loudly - with my bro when his move to chicago was announced.

i'm pretty sure there's a good reason for his doing a 'straight' call in chicago - the chuckisms were totally provincial and, I would say, unprofessional. sure, be enthusiastic and have fun, but arguing with the colour guy about how early the salami should be pulled out... i mean that's just ludicrous.

If by Dull people mean calling the game as it is, then Delvin will be a breath of fresh air.

Chuck did a great job promoting the team, which was great becaue we were an image which required to be promoted during his time. We've reached a period in our history right now where we're beginning to solidify our place in the market. No longer do we need quirks; instead we need a guy who brings knowledge and is a straight shooter. Delvin will excel in this capacity and will be a breath of fresh air to a market place that no longer needs to learn the game of basketball but understands the game of basketball.

Man - if he would have shut down the Salami and Cheese and a couple other Chuckisms, I would be sad to see him go. Why does he feel he needs to spare the good people of Chicago and not us?

Snooch 07-22-2008 02:53 PM

For merchandising.

I hope he doesn't get lazy and use what he reads here on his telecasts.

Or I'll turn them down, and he'll sound like Thr.. er I mean he'll get fired.

uhhh..... that is 100% Leo Rautins being unable to stop being ass for even a second. That is Leo Rautins mocking Chuck and being a dickwad bully. Yeah, I said bully, cuz that's how Leo behaved.

Chuck had a good thing going for a while with the Salami and Cheese call.... he was lowkey about it and said it when he thought the game was over......but Leo felt it was necessary to make it a major issue every time.... felt it was more important to talk about that than actually talk about the game.

So, yes..... Chuck's catchisms began to get annoying towards the end of his stay..... but I certainly don't think that is all Chuck's fault.

i agree xw, sort of. you are right that leo bullied him about the s&c call, but if chuck hadn't pushed and pushed and pushed for that call to become commonplace, and if he hadn't 'pulled it out' 2 minutes into the 3rd quarter of kobe's 81 pt game, leo never would have been tempted and i wouldn't have been so completely sick of the damn call by then. and this is just 1 of 10000 completely overused and irritating 'chuckisms'. we could talk about 18 parkerville court or the little engine or eating some rim or an nba facial or ka-bosh or mp3 download, and on and on and on and on. everything had a catch phrase, and every one of them was provincial and silly. if there were just a few they would have been quirky and enthusiastic, but there were an unlimited supply of them, and each one lamer than the last. in the end it was irritating and unprofessional. chuck was just too damn eager and he had no idea when to give it a rest. i loved chuck for the first 3 years, but after hearing the same old thing game after game it became so over the top that i couldn't stand him anymore.

no excuses for leo's crap either, but chuck was unbearable.

XiaominWu 07-22-2008 11:06 PM

that's cool.......

i actually enjoyed most of it..... and the rest I tolerated, because I was such a fan of the enthusiasm with which he made calls.

I realllly hope Mr. Devlin has a good energy level...... otherwise what's the point? We can all see what the fuck is happening out there.... no need for somebody to tell us that the shot went in.

Kirby 07-22-2008 11:12 PM

He's one of a kind.. He was good.

Snooch 07-23-2008 07:18 AM

I think me and Jack should get drunk and do the games.

Don't forget about "It's raining threes at [insert random NBA arena name here]!!!!"

That one pissed me right off. It wasn't clever in any way.

Snooch 07-23-2008 10:06 AM

I could deal with all of them except for NBA Facial and Onion baby onions-just didnt get the onions and Facials have no business anywhere but my personal collection of films.

Major 07-23-2008 10:26 AM

I wonder if the Bulls told him to leave the shenanigans in Toronto if he was to join the Bulls.
