QO offered to Sonny Weems

Sorry, QO EXTENDED to Weems - pardon the linguistically incorrect title.

Eric Smith ‏@Eric__Smith
Colangelo just confirmed that within moments he'll be extending qualifying offers to Jerryd Bayless and Sonny Weems. ‪#Raptors‬ ‪#SN590‬

Bringing him back? Or protecting an asset?

Also:

Eric Smith ‏@Eric__Smith

Colangelo said Alabi will not be given a qualifying offer. Thus he'll be a UFA. Said Alabi may still join the #Raptors summer league squad

would be very happy if sonny came back! (might be in the minority here!)

Dark Knight 06-29-2012 02:45 PM

Could be the cure to DeMar's suckage. Wouldn't mind him back as a 3rd string 2/3.

Sorry, I didn't see that the old thread had been bumped, we can delete this one.

I actually would be too. I think too many people were too harsh on Weems, and Triano was NOT the right coach for him. I think he could be really successful under Casey!

fancylad 06-29-2012 02:47 PM

sonny eh?

wow. wasn't expecting that one. I don't know i have some decent memories of Sonny during his first year, but thought he totally cocked up his second season with us. If playing in Eruope has humbled him a bit, then it may not be a bad idea to bring him back.

no no, thy offer the QO because it lessens the cap hit. they are freeing up room to grab nash. I read about it today, its really complicated.

DanH 06-29-2012 02:51 PM

If JJ or Demar has to go the other way in a SF trade, then Sonny is a good signing as backup SF/SG along with Ross.

Sounds really complicated, maybe Dan H could help clear this up?

It sounds counter-intuitive. I assumed that by extending the QO to Weems, that would leave us with his cap hold, which counts against the team's total salary.

If we hadn't extended him the qualifying offer, I thought that we would lose his cap hold?

Makes me think that we are more retaining his rights as a piece to add in a trade/ sign and trade, than bringing him back...protecting an asset?

If they waive Sonny's rights, they gain 0.6M in cap space relative to extending the QO. If they keep his rights but don't extend his QO, they clear up 0.3M in cap space relative to extending the QO.

Extending the QO takes up more cap space than any option except signing him to a contract.

This suggestion is incorrect, wherever you read it from.

There may be some confusion with Bayless' QO, but it would still be wrong in that case - a QO never reduces the cap hold.

Superjudge 06-29-2012 02:57 PM

oh fuck off..hahaha

fancylad 06-29-2012 02:58 PM

hahahaha don't quit your day job SJ, mr. capoligist.

Superjudge 06-29-2012 03:01 PM

hey man, when I am GM, and I will be one day, I am hiring one of these guys to do this for me. hahaha

I agree about the cap hold and this case the hit is so minute in the grand scheme. This is protecting an asset....there's been interest in Weems from other teams.

jeffb 06-29-2012 03:13 PM

All about having options. Good move!

Dario 06-29-2012 03:25 PM

Loool. Was weems secretly on our team the whole time?

We had his rights the whole time. No secret. We actually still have Julian Wright's rights (pun), Rasho's, Pape Sow's and Uros Slokar's among others. That'll change this year, as we're finally going to use cap space.

Dario 06-29-2012 03:38 PM

Rasho's still alive? Slokar? whos that. and Pape was a beast.

Don Vito 06-29-2012 03:43 PM

Not sure if I like it... I just hope Weems doesn't eat into the minutes of DD/Ross

It's just a QO to retain his rights.... chances are he's not coming back but will be used in a trade.
