Public flogging.

Just saw the power rankings thread in which the site claims the Raptors will take 8th spot.

Am I the only one that thinks that in this case, and this case only, it could actually be more negative than positive for the Raps to grab that spot?

I mean, all alterior motives about the draft aside, you have either Boston or Miami waiting for you to give you the spanking of a lifetime. They will receive no mercy. And all I can see are the jokes and humiliation by Barkley and the TNT crew and other U.S. media. Not to mention the players on those other teams. And I can't even say I would blame them for snickering. Playoff experience is good, but this would be an epic beat down. No second unit, just pedal to the metal for four 40 point blowouts.

And don't you just hate, hate , hate when they sit there at the end of the game laughing?

We're taking the 8th spot? :confused2:

MARTYNAS 01-10-2011 08:08 PM

Don't worry, not gonna happen...

carp 01-10-2011 08:09 PM

I'm all for winning... who cares.

Yes, look at the power ramkings thread. It's not some Raptors fan saying this.

fancylad 01-10-2011 08:35 PM

If... a HUGE if.... this current team can play solid enough ball from here on in to qualify for 8th, then i'm all for it.

Think about the odds of this happening though: We are already 11 games or whatever under .500. Even if a sub .500 team would qualify i would assume this team would have to play over .500 at least - AT LEAST - to even give themselves a chance. And that in my humble opinion just won't happen.

However if by some basketball miracle they could pull it off, i think the confidence and the overall positivity gained from the second half of the season would do wonders to this team's development. Even with a quick playoff exit... it would be VERY good for this young team.

nightmare56 01-10-2011 08:49 PM

think Oklahoma vs lakers playoffs. if we end up winning a game or two and fight hard, the team might just get that extra confidence for next year. Plus the fans still loved okc for giving it their best.

but yes okc did have 50 wins and could have been 6th too (tied with portland and san antonio each with 50 wins. the raptors are not even close to a 50 win team)

exactly. there are no shitty playoff teams in the west.

Kirby 01-10-2011 09:21 PM

another 14th pick? :sigh:

Ligeia 01-10-2011 09:31 PM

A team below .500 in the East will definitely make the playoffs this year, if not both the 7th and the 8th seeds.

I agree with the OP that it would be bad news for the future of this team. They'd be gaining nothing and giving up valuable positions in the draft.

Playoff experience on a young team is VERY valuable, whether that means a first round exit or not. In fact, a first round exit might be beneficial. Makes the players hungrier to go further in the future.

MrClutch 01-10-2011 09:41 PM

i say its too early for us to get into the playoffs, we have to rebuild properly

Ammo 01-10-2011 09:43 PM

This is not the Toronto Maple Leafs. They are 2 games out of a playoff spot in the east. 7th and 8th are Indiana and Philly. Full strength, you can't actulally say those 2 teams are better.

It's not how good the Raptors are, it's how piss poor these other teams are that's troubling. Houston....we have a problem.

fancylad 01-10-2011 09:47 PM

hey in my defense, i haven't bothered to look at the standings since once this season, so pardon me if i gave the east too much credit. :)

I assume(d) that a 36ish wins would be a minimum to make the playoffs.

For a team that has ignorant opinions and ignorant statements made about it, and players marching out of town at their 1st opportunity, humiliation does not become a plus. It would be a "what are you people even doing here?" moment. Although I admit experience has some benefits.

I am not usually one to miss playoffs, but I have to admit that I would not pay to go and watch them get their faces kicked in. TV would be my limit.

LX 01-10-2011 09:54 PM

I think they have a better chance of finishing near the bottom, just above Cleveland. It looks like the Nets could get much better soon. Detroit is milking McGrady nicely right now, and slowing the pace so that the defense isn't overly exposed. Charlotte has been looking better since the coaching change. And Washington has enough talent to push past the Raptors ever so slightly.

I think you need to read this again AMMO.

Two games out of No. 8 in the East with all those injuries? The Raps will take it. And there's always this when No. 8 is out of reach: They need just one 3 in 21 more games for 1,000 games in a row with at least one triple.
It's not saying the Raps will take the 8th spot. It's saying they'll gladly take the position they are in right now all things considered. And then it goes on to make it seem as hopeless as ever, suggesting that the 8th seed will be out of reach soon enough. But there's the streak!

I agree, getting humiliated is never fun. But lets say the Raps do somehow end up in the 8th position and face the Heat and lets say we get swept like most predict, who knows. But what I do know is that Jay should use that ass beating as motivation for the coming season. Players don't like to lose, its a well-known fact. If Jay could use the humiliation in a positive manner, maybe it could help the team get better both mentally and physically.

Maybe, but why mention only 2 games out of a playoff spot with all of those injuries if it means the team cannot make up the 2 games?

They've lost two thirds of their games. They should wake up pissed off at the whole world every morning. They are just not real good right now. Just too bad they have so much company in the east.
