Psycho T in. Amir to the bench.

Psycho T into the starting lineup and either JV or Amir to the bench.

Raptors coach Dwane Casey suggested that he may change his starting lineup for Sunday's game vs. Denver.
Amir Johnson played only 18 minutes on Friday, while Jonas Valanciunas played 18 minutes, and either guy could be benched in favor of Tyler Hansbrough. "I think you have to look at the chemistry, skill set, what they bring to the table, a little bit of everything," Casey said. "It's not that we're not playing hard, it's just not meshing together with the first group."

Pretty ridiculous that they both played 18min. This guy seriously needs to be fired with his small ball bullshit. Another young player not being developed properly.

If Jonas gets moved to the bench I expect this place to go nuclear lol.

As it should. Putting our potential franchise guy on the bench because the coach has no idea how to utilize him on the floor in favor of a veteran who has already reached his peak is probably the worst thing that could happen this year, outside of making the playoffs and getting killed Bucks style and getting a mid round pick.

Then again, if it does happen, and we continue losing, which we will in this next hard stretch of games, Casey should be fired, which will lead to Jonas flourishing.

Either way, Casey sucks, and he needs to go. Now. He's probably the worst coach in Raptors history. Kevin Oneill move over.

This should be added to the game thread considering it's already talked about there.

If we're going to go small why not start:

Starters:
Lowry
Ross
Derozan
Gay
Valanciunas

Bench:
Buycks/Augustin
Fields
Novak
TH
Amir

LX 11-30-2013 08:36 PM

some interesting numbers in the piece kinda point to Valanciunas being a problem beyond how the coach has used him. And Amir has been pretty disappointing this season as well.

Quote:

The Raptors - who used 22 different starting lineups last season, sixth most in the NBA - have started the same unit in each game to begin the campaign. After experiencing some success on the floor together - specifically on the defensive end - towards the end of last season, the group of Kyle Lowry, DeMar DeRozan, Rudy Gay, Amir Johnson and Jonas Valanciunas has underachieved through 15 contests this year.

That unit - the Raptors most used, both this season and last - outscored opponents by 85 points when they were in the game together a year ago, starting 21 of the team's final 25 games. They ranked third in the NBA in defensive efficiency among five-man units that played a minimum of 300 minutes together (only the Spurs and Grizzlies' starting fives had a better defensive rating). This season they are a minus-35, per NBA.com/stats, and are allowing opponents to shoot 52 per cent from the field. They have shared the floor for 229 minutes while the team's second most-utilized unit - Lowry, DeRozan, Gay and Johnson with Landry Fields - has played just 34 minutes together.

As a team, Toronto has been least effective in the first and third quarters, with the starters playing the bulk of the team's minutes. The Raptors are a plus-three in the opening frame and minus-39 in the third. Their best quarter has been the fourth - a period in which the starters have rarely played together - where their plus-45 mark is third best in the NBA (behind only the Pacers and Thunder).

"I think you have to look at the chemistry, skill set, what they bring to the table, a little bit of everything," Casey said of a possible change. "I don't question our guys' fight. It's not that we're not playing hard, it's just not meshing together with the first group."

Our starting PF/C are averaging a combined 18ppg/14rpg/1.8bpg

That's awful production from your starting front court. And with JV's lack of defensive awareness it's certainly a problem.

Don Vito 11-30-2013 09:34 PM

Jonas to the bench while Gay shoots bricks and plays like shit. Casey is a horrible coach, no balls to bench the "leaders" of the team. He also never says anything negative about guys like rudy and demar to the media, but young guys like ross and jonas always get criticized by him publicly.

Post of the day.

Well the way Rudy puts up shots it only makes sense to put Tyler in the game to grab boards lol.. he's physical and doesn't need the ball

I say move Amir to the bench, I see him playing well with some one like Landry Fields who knows how to get players involved

Tommy C 11-30-2013 10:44 PM

How about benching Rudy lol :jack:

MikeToronto 12-01-2013 01:45 AM

Indeed, any coach worth his salt would start with benching of Rudy Gay. Or, at the very least, with a serious talk with him about feeding the post, passing the ball in general and not trying to do what he can't.

honestly, what can he do? dude can't even make layups any more, and he loses the ball as if it actually was a hot potato

Carlito 12-01-2013 09:21 AM

I think Amir will get benched .... he is invisible while playing with the starters

LX 12-01-2013 10:14 AM

Amir has been very disappointing. I worry that his ankle just isn't quite right anymore, or something. He doesn't have the same kind of activity level. I hoped he would be something of a leader and bring energy on the defensive end right out of the gate.

I subscribe with the amir views, it's not just his production, his whole presence on the court, he seems like he's not 100% committed. Not sure if it's frustration of some kind, but I remember he was pretty bad early last year too, before coming along in the second half of the season after he got promoted to the starting unit.

I don't have a problem with benching either one, never bought the argument that you need to start in order to develop. And JV may get more touches with the second unit, which may actually be better for him. Whatever the fault of the coaching stuff is, JV is not doing too good now and a wake up call may help too.

0nekhmer 12-01-2013 12:50 PM

I don't blame Amir entirely, Casey forced him to play the stretch 4 and took his game out along with JVs completely.

is the summer 3 a Casey thing, or Amir thing? Or Devlin thing?
