Pritchard, Maybe

Toronto narrowing its list of GM candidates
Don't expect any movement on the Toronto general manager's search for a couple of weeks. Team president Bryan Colangelo was in Europe last week and won't start whittling down his group of candidates until the middle of the month. Sixers GM Ed Stefanski, former Hornets GM and coach Jeff Bower and Spurs assistant GM Dennis Lindsey are among the candidates, but former Blazers general manager Kevin Pritchard is also believed to be in the hunt and is a strong candidate. Pritchard took a player personnel job with the Pacers earlier this summer, but has an out in his deal that would allow him to leave if a GM job became available.

UPDATE: Via a source, Bob Cooney of the Philadelphia Daily News has reported that Sefanski will interview for the Raptors GM spot in early August.

---

Toronto Raptors president and general manager Bryan Colangelo is looking to hire someone to take over the general manager duties and there is a report there are three candidates that are the frontrunners for the position.

According to Yahoo! Sports the three people under consideration are Philadelphia general manager Ed Stefanski, former New Orleans general manager Jeff Bower and San Antonio vice president/assistant general manager Dennis Lindsey.

According to the report, interviews may not begin until August.
i don't think pritchard and BC could co-exist. spoiled brats usually have a hard time sharing toys.

carp 08-01-2011 05:41 PM

spoiled brats? That's not really fair.

I think Stefanski seems like a good choice regardless.

Hold on... when did we re-up Colangelo to be the GM? a few months ago?

Does.not.compute.

'trane 08-01-2011 10:55 PM

he's talked about moving to president only and bringing in another basketball mind as the gm. i think jeff posted it first here, but i could be wrong:

i know. i remember. At the time it did seem like the bringing in of another GM seemed like less of a reality though.

It's just strange that so many people were up in arms about the prospect of someone other than Colangelo being the GM here, and now here we are a few months into his new term, and it looks like he doesn't even want to be the GM - or he's not qualified enough - or he's not up to task. Either way it's not exactly what i was expecting.

read my post again. I didn't say it was news. I said it doesn't make a whole lot of sense given how we supposedly just extended our amazing GM who would surely do better than anyone else (given the many factors that come with this market) and how not long ago the team would have been insane to entertain someone else as the GM.

Doesn't the whole thing seem weird to you? Just because the story was mentioned before doesn't suddenly make this whole thing logical.

It could have something to do with the wishes of prospective buyers, or Colangelo looking to insulate himself for the future, or just a recognition by the current board, that there needs to be a strong voice to balance out BC, particularly if he wants to work within a model that employs consensus decision-making. Or all of the above. Or none of the above. Considering nothing has really worked for 16 years, it seems very positive, especially if it means distancing operations from the "too many chefs" at MLSE, one way or another. If adding an effective layer can spell the end to so many ineffective layers, then hooray.

fancylad 08-02-2011 09:59 AM

if it takes 2 excecutives of the year or whatever to make this piece of shit franchise work, then fine. Get it done MLSE.

Toronto already hired a GM much like Pritchard back in 2006 in Bryan Colangelo, and even though he's decided to step away from the GM role and just act as president of the team, his DNA is still all over the franchise -- something that may not mesh well with Pritchard.

Both Pritchard and Colangelo are control freaks with strong personalities. If he were to come into the Raptor-fold the two would likely butt heads with each other. And while healthy debate and input on how to improve the team is generally a good thing, constant disagreement is something a franchise doesn't want to deal with.

It has been reported in the past that the reason for Pritchard's departure from Portland was because he hungered for both power and media adoration. These are two things he isn't likely to receive as much in Toronto, as long as Colangelo stays above him in the franchise hierarchy.

The hire that the Raptors president should make is one that can create synergy amongst him and his GM. Colangelo won't find that perfect sync if he hires Pritchard, but he may just find it in Lindsey.

we should hire pritchard and lindsey so we have our own big 3...

LX 08-04-2011 04:07 PM

as much as I dislike the use of synergy as a term, it is pretty much what is needed.

LA Times: Raptors should avoid Pritchard, hire Lindsey

Quote:

Toronto, Canada Add Kevin Pritchard to the list of hopefuls for the vacant Toronto Raptors general manager position.

The former Portland Trailblazers GM joins Ed Stefanski, Jeff Bower and Dennis Lindsey as the list of names that the Raptors have been reported to show the most interest towards and, out of everyone, he certainly seems like the obvious choice.

Pritchard's time in Portland wasn't the longest but it was quite successful, as he laid down the building blocks to transform a perennial loser into one of the most talked about up-and-coming teams in the NBA.

The young core of LaMarcus Aldridge, Brandon Roy and Nicolas Batum has Pritchard's fingerprints all over it, so it's clear that he's very capable of building a winner. And out of all the other lead candidates for the Raptors job, he'll probably be considered the frontrunner because he's more of a known commodity than the others; even though some of them have more experience.

With that in mind, Pritchard's arrival would be pretty exciting for Raptors fans. After all, he would be a young, vibrant GM eager to prove himself again and turn the franchise's fortunes around. However, that is exactly why a Pritchard hire would be problematic.

Toronto already hired a GM much like Pritchard back in 2006 in Bryan Colangelo, and even though he's decided to step away from the GM role and just act as president of the team, his DNA is still all over the franchise -- something that may not mesh well with Pritchard.

The hire that the Raptors president should make is one that can create synergy amongst him and his GM. Colangelo won't find that perfect sync if he hires Pritchard, but he may just find it in Lindsey.

As the current assistant GM of the San Antonio Spurs, Lindsey would bring some championship knowledge to the front office and seeing how the Spurs have made a living off picking exceptional players later in the draft, his talent evaluation skills will work wonders for a team likely headed to the lottery.
Quote:

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the reason why Lindsey should be the prime candidate is because Colangelo will still be able to go hands-on with the team because Lindsey would be a rookie GM, making him more easily controlled, which would allow Colangelo to still execute his vision for the club.
