Power RANKINGS Week 15

Breakdown
11
Pace: 95.8 (10), Off: 109.1 (2), Def: 109.5 (30)
Their defense provided a November flashback in a 130-115 loss in Indiana, but the Raptors have won seven of their last eight, shooting 51 percent in that stretch. With the teams behind them faltering, they have a strong hold on that fifth spot in the East.

REC.
28-23

I have to agree. This team doesn't play defence for long stretches. I hated the Indiana game. The Sacramento game was very frustating until the fourth quarter. I think this team has a false sense of arrogance, where we can press a button and beat teams. When we beat the good teams like LA, Dallas, San Antonio at home, we played hard the full game.

Marc Stein's rankings:

8 (7) Raptors 28-23

Since that 146-115 humbling in Atlanta on Dec. 2 and the team meeting that followed, Toronto is a tidy 21-10. Which almost -- almost -- atones for the 130 points surrendered to Indy after we moved the Raps all the way to No. 7.

I don't think so.

Give a look at the 4th quarter. When they start playing D, they do it well enough.
Can they substain the effort for 4 quarter ? That's the big if.

The Indiana game had as much to do with the first and second units getting mixed up as it did with anything else. They can only go so far with their depth without problems arising. The biggest problem by far with the defense is in transition. Is it really such a mystery how that was less of a problem against the Spurs or even the Mavs, or why it's less of a problem with most teams come the fourth quarter as opposed to the first or third? My only real question is how they get better with facing the transition game, and whether they can find the right player to plug in to make that much less of a weakness.

Let's not think they are getting away with wins while giving up high shooting percentages. That is not the pattern at all. Even against Indy they stayed in the game far longer than they should have due to a good stretch of defensively play. It was actually the offense that completely tanked in that game.

This is a team that is going to give opposing teams fits with their offense, but it is continued progress defensively, with results ranking in the top third of the league from week to week, that is going to make the difference in the end. But progress is progress, it doesn't entail a finished product at this point. That doesn't negate all progress. Defense does take time, and this particular group probably needs one more piece of the puzzle as well. Reggie might help in some areas. A trade might help as well. Or maybe the riddle gets solved in the offseason. But imagine seeing them in the top 25 percent of the league defensively while continuing to gel offensively as well. That's not at all out of the question with the right move, and the right progress being made.
