"Popping the Turkoglu bubble"

I'll start by saying that I'm one of Turkoglu's biggest fans. I liked him when he went by Hidayet and backed up Peja in Sacramento. With all due respect to Kevin Durant, he could very well be the best ball-handler his size in the league right now. He's an under-rated defender, a good rebounder for the small forward position and he plays smart, fundamental basketball.

But he's not a star and contrary to popular belief, he's really not even that great a shooter.

Last season, for instance, he hit the exact same number of 3s as Rasheed Wallace, and at almost the exact same mediocre percentage (.356, good for 95th in the league). In his celebrated conference finals against Cleveland, he actually shot below .400 from the field. He's essentially a streak shooter; deadly when on, average when not. He's not a volume scorer either. Except for one season, he generally tops out at around 17 a game. That's Jeff Green/Andrea Bargnani/Andre Miller territory.

It's important to note too that his numbers have come playing alongside Dwight Howard on a team filled with solid shooters. He never faced double teams, got a huge number of open shots, and benefited from the fact that whoever is guarding Dwight Howard has to box out continuously instead of helping out on drives (meaning defenders have to back off more).

If he averages around 16-18 points a game and shares second banana duties with Bargnani and Calderon, depending on who's hot, I'll be happy.
does anyone here, or anywhere really, expect him to do more than this?

I'm not even thinking about stats.

I'll just be happy if he's a solid contributor and doesn't miss a large chunk of the season to injury.

Yeah I don't get what people are expecting of Hedo here either.

His numbers will probably be a serviceable 16-5-5 in 32 minutes or so. We don't need him to be a superstar, just an anchor of the starting lineup in the 1st and 4th quarters. We have ball handlers and scorers in the lineup; Hedo is just another weapon to have out there, and a distributor to get things going. It's always invaluable to have a second guy who can bring the ball up and take or make passes out of traps and double teams.

We have two solid ballhandling PG's, and several scorers. Hedo won't have to be "the man" but when you're looking for someone to take a big shot at the end of the game, it will be nice to have Bosh, Bargnani and Hedo on the floor at once, as well as the option of guys like Belinelli who have absolutely no conscience shooting the ball.

That's the beauty of this team for me. Nobody has to be the "man". It's gonna be awesome.

He's not a star. Is he a basketball player? Damn there's a lot of wasted thought on a player's rank or status as an individual. I honestly don't get it.

I was thinking the same.
I blame idle hands and a lack of basketball on tv.

Ok, hold the phone. Hedo is playing along side:

Andrea Bargnani, a perimeter scorer who forces guys out of the paint or punishes them with the long ball.

And

Chris Bosh, a mid range expert who has now added the 3 ball to his arsenal. A man who demands double teams.

One would think that both these guys will force big men out of the paint and allow space inside for peneration or am I waaaay off base in my thinking here?

Another interesting observation is that a lot of the same people who are saying that Hedo will disappoint for us are the same ones who said that Hedo was the MVP of that Orlando team that made the finals (which is ludicrous - Dwight was, but Hedo was definitely #2).

Also, I may be cynical, but I could totally picture Hedo's outlook being totally different if the Portland signing went through. People would be going on and on about how he "takes the pressure off Roy" and solidifies their starting 5 of Blake, Roy, Hedo, Aldridge and Oden, with sparkplugs Fernandez, Outlaw, Pryzbilla off the bench.

Yeah i was just watching NBATV (RapsTv) and they were doing the fantasy discussions for each position and even though Rick Kamla usually loves Hedo they expect him to have a down year in Toronto and they put him on the buyer beware list.

The concern about Hedo is he only got 14/4/3 before Stan got there and made him their point forward. (OMG that would be outstanding on the Raptors!)

But anyone who bothers to listen to Jay Triano knows that they are importing Orlando's plays so that the Raptors can use Hedo the same way SVG did.

Hedo is good for 15-20ppg/5-6apg/5rpg on the Raps.

The Raps should be a very high scoring team this year.

No way he gets 20ppg. 15, sure but 20..... no way in hell. I do think his assists might go up a bit and he'll give us around 5 boards per.
