The politics behind Toronto starting Jarrett Jack or Jose Calderon

Quote:

The politics must end.

Instead of continuing to try to justify the five-year, $45 million contract they awarded point guard Jose Calderon two years ago, the Toronto Raptors’ front office must swallow their pride, come clean, and concede that Jarrett Jack deserves to start.

Full time.

Sure, Calderon has an impressive assists-to-turnover ratio and is a fan favourite with his engaging, good-guy approach. And sure, executive Bryan Colangelo - also known as the former golden boy of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment - threw his unconditional support behind Calderon when he extended him in July, 2008.

None of that should matter, though. What should matter is results. And Jack has produced superior results when starting for the injured Calderon and, for several reasons, is better equipped to continue on as the first-stringer.

Winning teams often take on the identity of their point guard, even if he’s a supporting piece. For instance, when at their best, the world champion Los Angeles Lakers exude Derek Fisher’s determination, while, two years ago, the Boston Celtics had some of young Rajon Rondo’s swagger.

Perhaps, the best example is Avery Johnson and the San Antonio Spurs. Johnson wasn’t the most talented or gifted point guard, but his will and smarts defined those championship Spur teams.

First ticket Hall of Fame players like Tim Duncan and David Robinson were the unquestioned superstars. Johnson, however, was very much a co-star, who pushed lead by example guys such as Duncan, Robinson, and the rest of the likeable Spurs.

Jack is a competitor. He pushes superstar Chris Bosh, an old friend from college, and plays with intensity whenever he takes the floor. Like Johnson, Jack has influenced his teammates, which, in turn, has helped Toronto win five straight games.

Good read. Totally agree. I've seen all our guys play a little tougher, or dirtier since Jack starting bringing the ball up the court.

It doesn't hurt having our backup PG to be badass Marcus Banks. Once we get Evans back... and hopefully Calderon out of town... our team won't be that "soft" anymore at all.

What a dump story ! It just shows that you don't need to understand basketball to write about it. Someone dipped into champagne early on DEC.31. Jack has showed that he can be a good back up to Jose. The timing has been perfect for Jack and our team. Playing against sub par competition during this stretch just show how stupid some writers can be.
Jack was sub par when he played against good teams and a tougher schedule at the beggining of the season. What a way to open up the 2010 with a bull shit story.

Schedule, opponents, and the fact that Jose has yet to really gel with the new lineup means nothing.

Raps won 5 straight against lesser competion who were mostly missing key players and Jack was playing, so jack must be better.

Jack should not see any playing time at the 2 when Calderon returns !

I really like how our team looks when Jack plays the pg spot only. He gets killed on d when he plays the 2 and when matched with Jose at the 1 it just puts too much pressure on our 3,4, and 5 spot.
When Jose comes back Jack should get his 20-25 mins a game. Both Jose and Jack should split the 1 spot. Jack could have fared well at the 2 spot though during this weak stretch in the schedule but then everyone would have been fooled that Jack can play the 2 spot. Bottom line no playing time for Jack at the 2 spot.
If anthing maybe at the end of the game just to have an extra ball handler that can hit foul shots when the opposition has to pressure the ball and foul us to stop the clock.

next week the picture will be clearer

It amazes me how much repetition is on this site... it really kills my motivation to contribute...

It will not be clearer next week, If calderon makes it back he might be playing at 50 percent. It takes time to get back into game shape. Calderon is by far the better point guard, and people are really getting to excited about this 5 game winning streak against shitty teams. Remember when we lost to Charlotte by 30?

I wonder who the starting PG was in that game
clearer after the week seeing if Jack can handle tougher competition

If Jose isn't going to be 100 percent then there's no debate. We've seen that story before.

And Jack simply looks to be a better fit with the starters, while not having to squeeze himself into a role that didn't suit him as well.

sixel 01-01-2010 04:48 PM

Calderon should be a backup when he return and should regain his starting spot when he'll prove to everybody that he deserves it
Banks earned a spot in the rotation in my opinion(he deserves it more than Wright)
Jack sucks as much as Calderon in defense

hirmak 01-01-2010 05:50 PM

Why didn't I feel surprised someone should defend Jose(U know who he is):dead: Calderon is now the third guard after Jack and Banks in this team even he'd be healty. Why don't U want to understand? He's a good player but not the one that Toronto needs.:yeah::yeah::yeah:

Exactly.

Shifty.py 01-01-2010 09:26 PM

ONLY reason to start Jack is because he meshes with Hedo better. And thats a major factor, considering how useless Hedo is without the ball.
He is not better than Jose, but he is solid, cut down his TOs and dribbles well. Recognizes fast breaks also. I doubt Weems could prosper under Calderon.

So yes, start Jack but don't trade Jose. Banks is being showcased and he now has less negative trade value.

bimmer5 01-01-2010 10:16 PM

1. Going into the paint and breaking defense: JJ>>>Calderon
2. Running fast breaks: JJ>>>>Calderon (Calderon likes stopping at the parameter)
3. Defense: JJ>Calderon (Caldy claps hands too much :yeah:)
4. Mashing with the new team: JJ>>Caldy
5. Finding Bosh only and ignoring others: Caldy>>>JJ :mischief:
6. Parameter scoring: Caldy>>>>JJ
7. Alley-oops to DD: Caldy>>JJ

Calderon looks happy on the bench,, no more annoying interviews before and after game, no more getting injured, no more pressure, front row seats to raptor games. oh i forgot something, the paycheck afterwards....

nathanapes 01-02-2010 05:03 AM

u guys really think calderon is that good of a player....smh, he sucks too much to be making the money he makes. Period, end of story. TRADE his ASS
