Player Expectations - Jose Calderon

Reading a post at the RealGM regarding Jose and people's expectations for him next season as the main PG, made me think that while things are slow for the next while maybe chatting about each current member on this roster might be a good thing to pass the time. :)

Anyhow, check out what supersub15 at the RealGM has to say about Jose's numbers as the main PG this past season.

In that regard, Calderon played 30 games as the main PG of the team and was backed up by Juan Dixon and/or Darrick Martin in limited minutes.

Calderon's stats in the 30 games in which TJ Ford was completely out:

37 mpg, 14.8 ppg, 10.2 apg, 1.73 tov
0.543 FG%, 0.449 3FG%, 0.910 FT%

Obviously, there is no guarantee that he can repeat those numbers, especially that we have a second option on offense now, but the sample size is fair enough to suggest that he can at least keep the assists up, but probably not the points.

Personally, I don't care about his points, because if he's dishing 10 assists per game, then the whole team is benefitting.

What are your thoughts guys? Can we expect similar numbers from Jose next season or better? :confused2:

Something like 13/8.8. I think he was playing out of his mind last year, this will be a bit of a calm down. But still a top 6 or 7 PG depending on how Kidd and Nash hold up.

Calderons stats dropped some as that time went on(I beleive) so I would figure he would be a bit more conservative being the main man now at PG. I tink the Raps will run some new offensive set this year as well with the 3 key pieces being Bosh, JO and Jose; so based on what that system is you could see a change in his stats mainly being his assist rate. I think that the Raps this year are going to look more like the Pistons of the past decade and Jose's number will be comparable to that of Billups but slightly less in points and slightly more in assists.
Im going to say 15/9.
I think joses biggest improvement this year will be in his defense( thanks to JO and hopefully a system) in which he will average closer to 2spg and 4 rpg

Don't discount off court stuff and mind set.

As "the man", knowing you are, playing like you are, and feeling like you're in control, you tend to play better.

I think Jose will play very well next year and produce close to what he was doing while Ford was out.

I expect 13PPG/9-10APG. He'll be getting alot of assists giving the ball to Bosh/ONeal down low.

I also don't think he'll get as many minutes as when DMart was our only backup, so that should drop the numbers just a bit.

I was thinking about this earlier. His assists stats this year are going to improve greatly with our dynamic duo down low to dish the ball to. It's almost scary to see how many he can get per game. I think he's going to be top three in the league.

If so, we may even have three All-Stars on this team next year.

12 points 47% 40% 90%
9 assists
3 rebounds
1.5 steals
2 turnovers

I expect him to be able to take over the odd game with his shot, and get better on defense.

rapsfan087 07-14-2008 07:08 PM

A gold medal ... er a consistent shot, the same or better assists/turnovers ratio and a better defence one on one would be nice too.

Demetrio 07-14-2008 08:29 PM

14 pts
11 assist

15 and 10. I think he'll take more shots now that he has Bosh AND JO picking for him, he has to basically. I think he'll be around 50% again too. Not much else you can ask from him, besides a little more D.

I think there will be the inevitable dip. Isn't that always the way with most athletes? Their contract's about to be up, and the thought of boatloads of cash motivates them to do things they didn't do before, and most likely won't do afterwards. And who knows how he'll respond to being the man.

If he averages 15/10, I expect him to get a lot more coverage and cred from the league and press, especially with his likeable demeanour. I mean nowadays basketball players are totally ranked on their stats (like the DPOY, the emphasis on blocks is a joke), and 15/10 would put him right up there.

I do.

Because he already responded once, well.

the_ raps_analyst 07-15-2008 01:38 PM

he will take more shots since delfino is gone and will score around 14 and 10 assists.

Major 07-15-2008 04:35 PM

Do you really think Delfino leaving is gonna make that much of a difference for Jose's shooting? He already shoots in games.

13 ppg / 9 ast
