Default perceptions and mis-perceptions

As we can see on this board, everyone has their own perception of players, so feel free to check in with your own. Some players had me fooled, some are plain as day, some remain enigmas.

Quincy Acy - inconclusive, but athletic, if only he could grow 3 inches
Alan Anderson - he's peaked, role player, spot duty, 10th man on decent team
Andrea Bargnani - enigma in need of an enema, will never grow balls, move at next hot streak
DeMar DeRozan - freak athlete who had much about actually playing basketball to learn, bubble all-star at peak
Landry Fields - valuable on a good team to do dirty work, just too expensive
Rudy Gay - plenty of talent, needs off season for better conditioning and to re-focus as "THE" man.
Aaron Gray - should see very few minutes at C on a good team
Amir Johnson - warrior, great rotation guy, but likely 1st big off bench on great team. Will have a place with fans in T.O. for ever
Linas Kleiza - just O.K. as a bench player, catching next bus out of town.
Kyle Lowry - what a difference in maturity from arrival in Toronto, could be very valuable healthy, well worth a #10-ish pick.
John Lucas - good locker room guy, 1st backup PG on a bad team
Mickael Pietrus - not sure even a Chinese team wants to take this much risk.
Terrence Ross - no idea of work ethic, but if it could be like Demar's, he could be a nightmare in 3-5 years.
Sebastian Telfair - in the absence of better options, could be Lowry's backup
Jonas Valanciunas - extremely hungry, a Raps fan's dream. With increased strength an tutoring, all-star potential

You say Lowry is worth a #10ish pick, but truth is, had we not made that trade, we'd likely be in the range of 5-10..... and I'm not sure you can overvalue how valuable it would be to have a guy on a rookie deal for 4 years.....

But for all the times we've heard how much of a gamble the draft is, we have a better idea of what Lowry is/could be healthy instead of facing the prospect of yet another development project. I'm not as concerned about things like attitude as I once was. I'm not going to name the names of guys we have unnecessarily frittered away years on to develop. Further, there were too many positions to solidify.

And we'd save money on another 4 year rookie deal to sign nobody because no one decent wants to join that scenario on their own accord.

Tinkering still necessary, but we should soon have top 10 all-around ability at most positions. PF should be a position of interest.

Raptors - Average talent across the board. Promise in maybe 3-4 or the 13 roster spots. Inefficient. Ok bunch, but overall talent level is far to low.

Quincy Acy - nice guy, heartbreaking story behind the curtain, too small
Alan Anderson - he has The Look, very very skilled, too selfish (would be solid starter/6th man under best coaches in the world)
Andrea Bargnani - phlegmatic
DeMar DeRozan - sick athlete, sick mid range shot, too unselfish (nothing what good coach can't fix)
Landry Fields - every player is good, great when they're underpaid, in Fields' case - get that garbage outta here!
Rudy Gay - sick body (not in a gay way... not in the Gay way, I mean not in the gay way.. you know what I mean), should never again take a longer shot than 10 feet (nothing what good coach can't fix)
Aaron Gray - could dominate in Europe, defensive super athlete when screening own players is not required
Amir Johnson - dude, sweet
Linas Kleiza - potential triple double guy every night, good character, fighter, helps JV, looks good in a suit, pissed Charlie V once and laughed in his angry face from close distance
Kyle Lowry - potential triple double guy every game (nothing what good coach can't fix), lil too fat for a PG
John Lucas - should play sg in Europe with Gray
Mickael Pietrus - do a little dance, have a lots of fun, get benched tonight aha aha... and every other night
Terrence Ross - participating in the dunk contest ruined bright career for this athletic sleeper Could join And1 team with Telfair and go on US wide tours
Sebastian Telfair - go back to streetball and stop having Lowry's face
Jonas Valanciunas -

Quincy Acy: Borderline NBAer at the moment
Alan Anderson - Solid solid. Rotation player on any team.
Andrea Bargnani - not worth the effort
DeMar DeRozan - Pillar of the team - worth building around
Landry Fields - solid defender with good length
Rudy Gay - Impacts the game with his talent, not his play. So much to learn you wonder why he hasn't learned it already. Red Flags
Aaron Gray - Solid deep bench guy.
Amir Johnson - warrior, solid starter or great bench big on par with Collison
Linas Kleiza - Good bench guy, fighter
Kyle Lowry - Solid player. Could be upgraded, could be the starter for the future
John Lucas - Great deep bench guys - easy-bake
Mickael Pietrus - bad knees
Terrence Ross - finding his game
Sebastian Telfair - solid player but has trouble checking the swagger
Jonas Valanciunas - Sky is the limit - worth building around - can he stay healthy in the new NBA which doesn't seem kind on big bodies.

Quincy Acy: Lots of smiles. Too small for PF, too slow for SF. Could play PF when we go small but not against top teir talent. Keep him in the D league for another year.
Alan Anderson - First full season in the NBA, low cost ok player from mid bench, 7-8, situationally, good defender, good 3 point shooter, will be remembered for the constant look of pain on his face when called for a foul. We won't resign him.
Andrea Bargnani - Not capable of learning or arrogant. It appears to be effort but in truth he's almost the same player as when he came into the league. Will not rebound, will not rotate. Gotta go.
DeMar DeRozan - Average SG. Good offensively but terrible defender. Needs to learn to play D and add a 3 point shot to validate his contract. Plays much worse with Gay out of the game. Really nice kid, works hard apparently. Still on the fence with him. Gets one more year to prove it.
Landry Fields - Unlucky as hell. Good defender, good rebounder, good size, shot has left him, overpaid. Could be a great back-up at SG/SF if he can recover his offense.
Rudy Gay - Wants to be the man but is a work in progress in being that, changing his game/has been hurt. Needs to work on his shot. Needs better talent around him at PF/C. Overpaid. Will step up and take the late game shot no matter what.
Aaron Gray - 5th big. Verifies that white men can't jump with a vertical of 3 inches. Terrible haircut, needs to shave his head and grow an Acy.
Amir Johnson - Heart and soul of the team. Great value, slightly above average PF. Anyone dislike this guy ever?
Linas Kleiza - Too small and too much outside for a PF and too slow for SF. Tough but hurt, done, see ya. A triple double threat if playing in the WNBA.
Kyle Lowry - Great rebounder for a PG, good shooter, average passer. Has to stop gambling on defense because he exposes the whole team and gets Jonas/Amir in foul trouble. Sits out long stretches when they are. Bit of a fucking headcase and needs to stop taking technicals.
John Lucas - Great deep bench guy, good shooter on a bad 2nd unit.
Mickael Pietrus - Done in by injuries. Later.
Terrence Ross - No confidence. Lots of potential. Needs to work really hard in the summer on his size and shooting.
Sebastian Telfair - Borderline NBA player that seemed to put it together. Got a raw deal and now is scrambling to hang on.
Jonas Valanciunas - Tough. Big. Good hands and shot. 3 years and some ref respect and he can dominate the paint.

If Rudy has to be "the Man" they I might not make it with this team much longer. That should not be his role at all. If anybody has to be the heart and soul of the team it is likely to be Amir. If Gay can take his lead, commit to defense, and play a disciplined team game, then his strengths will not be undone as they likely would be if he assumes the role of heavy chucker.

hmmmm No consensus, but some commonalities.....

-Acy has a shot at being out of this league in 2 more years
-Anderson is fine at low cost, but is about to stop being low cost
-At his age, Sam Mitchell may be right that Bargs was ruined by never having to be pushed and earn anything
-Demar's not there yet, but work ethic alone has brought him this far, so who knows what he can add still
-Landry needs to refund some of that money
-Rudy Gay ain't Vince and shame on you if you kinda thought that. Should be looked at as a talent upgrade, but TEAM for the win.
-Aron Gray is Hoffa without steroids and an accent
-Amir is the personification of the attitude Raps fans want in a player
-Linas can grow a heck of a beard
- Lowry harnessed, healthy and focused could absolutely play all-star level, and it's not like we have a bunch of other options anyway
-Lucas - well, if there's no one else
-Ross - I don't know?????......except that he's The Phantom Menace
-Telfair - Not exactly happy to be here
-JV - Oh please don't get a major injury because guys like him are in very short supply.
- Nobody can figure out why Zalgaris thinks Lowry and Telfair are identical twins.
