Peja Being Bought Out

Just filed to ESPN.com: Raptors close to buyout of sharpshooter Peja Stojakovic. Buyout scheduled to be completed later today. Link to come

Would've liked to see him hit a few 3s for us but he'll help out a contending team.

too bad. I liked seeing him on the bench and that provided me some comfort. I mean say what you will about his injured knee and his play the last few years, but he was still a very handsome man:

catch ya later Peja!

Isn't his expiring contract an asset for a trade. How about the 10 million plus trade exception from the Bosh trade. The trade exception expires too. Thanks BC for nothing. This from a GM who during the summer said the Raps are " Retooling" rather than "Rebuilding." Sorry BC, you are Rebuilding!!!

i guess, but i really doubt that a wonky kneed, one dimensional hasbeen was really going to fetch us much in returns - even he can hit some shots.

One would assume he was being shopped around.

What the heck could we have gotten for Peja? There's no way I'd want someone with a crummy long term contract. Plus, with all of the TPE's floating around expiring contracts don't hold the same weight as the used to.

The TPE is the biggest asset... receiving teams would rather not pay any remaining salary.... and not many contending teams have the salary to send back in a deal without giving up rotation pieces for a guy that might not be healthy enough to contribute.

Colangelo is adjusting given the changing reality.... Getting Bayless was the big part of that deal, moving Peja was a secondary potential benefit.

Why in the world do we buy him out BEFORE trade deadline?

Only two reasonable explanations. It would save a lot of money.
Or there is a trade deal for our TPE all ready, just need to clear the lux tax

The Raptors publicly acknowledged almost immediately after acquiring Stojakovic from New Orleans that a buyout would be considered if no follow-up trade could be swung. But the Raptors, reluctant to take on long-term salary, were unlikely to find a workable trade, with Stojakovic earning $15 million in the final season of an original five-year deal he signed with the Hornets in the summer of 2006.

Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com that Stojakovic is determined to return to the Western Conference and join a playoff contender once he clears waivers and becomes a free agent, with three teams at the top of his list: Dallas, New Orleans and the Los Angeles Lakers.

I'd like to see him in Dallas..... Nola could use him, but I don't see them as legit title contenders. In LA he'd be deadly.

I don't understand... why the buyout? Isn't he guaranteed all that money anyways?

Sorry I don't know everything about NBA cap situations or how this stuff works. Exactly what do we get out of this?

He might agree to shave off a chunk (likely a million or two max).... saving the Raps money.... given that he is going to get a new minimum contract and get a chance to play on a winner.

This is fucking bullshit. It's Alonzo Mourning all over again.

I knew that Peja's knee injury was incredibly suspect, because there were no updates on his status at all, and everyone has been eerily quiet about the whole thing. In my gut I thought it was going to end with him going to another team, and being magically healthy for the remainder of the season.

We are dying with injuries right now, so the solution is to let Peja walk rather than give him a few minutes to get some points on the board? So much for that "veteran presence" on the bench. I guess he has fuck-all to teach the young'uns too...

As someone else said, this sends a clear message that we're rebuilding, not retooling. On the one hand, it does make sense - we could use a better draft pick, we still have our TPE for trading, etc.

But on the other hand, just like how the Vince Carter trade gave us a stinking pile of shit, and the Charlie V for TJ Ford for Jermaine O'Neal for Shawn Marion trades ended up with us holding the bag, similarly we've now given up Jarret Jack (a solid Raptor and probably my favourite player going into the season because he's one of the few who played hard every night) for Jerryd Bayless - a tweener who we can one day hope to be as solid as Jarret Jack. We got to shed ourselves of Marcus Banks' contract but he was expiring anyway!

I don't understand what Colangelo is doing here. The Hedo for Barbosa trade was genius, but trading Jack for Bayless seems like a trade for a trade's sake, and it's starting to stink. We had Jack on a very fair contract locked up long term. Now we better hope Bayless pans out because otherwise we are again holding the bag after a trade.

its not about play time or his value.
ITs that an opportunity might present itself. BC doesn't act on a whimmy, so he has something set up

$15,000,000 on a player that can barely contribute anymore is a really hard asset to move. Think of how many players a team would have to give up to move that contract: a team would give up 3-4 role players for what? Less salary in the summer?

And any larger contract that someone is willing to move without asking for more assets back would likely be a contract the Raptors don't want anyway.

Expiring contracts aren't really worth that much. Don't hold your breath on that TPE, either....
