I knew that Peja's knee injury was incredibly suspect, because there were no updates on his status at all, and everyone has been eerily quiet about the whole thing. In my gut I thought it was going to end with him going to another team, and being magically healthy for the remainder of the season.

We are dying with injuries right now, so the solution is to let Peja walk rather than give him a few minutes to get some points on the board? So much for that "veteran presence" on the bench. I guess he has fuck-all to teach the young'uns too...

As someone else said, this sends a clear message that we're rebuilding, not retooling. On the one hand, it does make sense - we could use a better draft pick, we still have our TPE for trading, etc.

But on the other hand, just like how the Vince Carter trade gave us a stinking pile of shit, and the Charlie V for TJ Ford for Jermaine O'Neal for Shawn Marion trades ended up with us holding the bag, similarly we've now given up Jarret Jack (a solid Raptor and probably my favourite player going into the season because he's one of the few who played hard every night) for Jerryd Bayless - a tweener who we can one day hope to be as solid as Jarret Jack. We got to shed ourselves of Marcus Banks' contract but he was expiring anyway!

I don't understand what Colangelo is doing here. The Hedo for Barbosa trade was genius, but trading Jack for Bayless seems like a trade for a trade's sake, and it's starting to stink. We had Jack on a very fair contract locked up long term. Now we better hope Bayless pans out because otherwise we are again holding the bag after a trade.
I can't believe how much I disagree. Here's why... maybe I'm seeing different things.

Alonzo got a full buyout, after refusing to show... management caved, and caved early. They didn't even get to see if Mourning would be able to play again. Raps are fully aware that Peja wants to return and haven't been able to find much interest for his skills at the cost of his large contract. Imagine what any legit contender would have to give to match that.... too many bench guys and we're not totally sold he can come back and contribute enough.

I don't think Jack's contract was a steal, or necessarily a bad deal either, but it was absolutely clear that one of he or Jose had to go, and too much was tied up in a pg duo that was underachieving. If one had a good game, the other struggled.... it just didn't work out. I for one am tired of trying to utilize a pg combo.... hopefully Bayless can learn under Jose, at a much cheaper price, and eventually grow into a starting pg. Maybe he doesn't become that, maybe he does.

Add to that I'm sure BC got a slight discount, Babcock never did. Mourning didn't give one cent back and still made it to the heat for a title.

How am I wrong here?

actually it's not.... maybe you should start listening again... lol... he even recently adjusted his wording.... it's almost like if somebody says something, many assume that individual can never change their perspective or direction.... unfortunately

We weren't going to get anything significant for him anyways. If he had value, why did NO trade him for only Jack and a few spare parts?

It's a rebuild any way you slice or whatever words are used. For the record he used the word rebuild last week. But really, take a look at this team and tell me this isn't a rebuild. We're one of the youngest teams in the league, have dumped salary, and have no star. If you really need specific words to be said to prove it, then i don't know what to tell you. Actions speak volumes, and our actions since Bosh left scream rebuild.

+1

'Cuda hit it right on the head here; rebuilding or retooling doesn't actually mean much, just that we're not currently in any position to challenge in the playoffs or be a contender, and very few teams ever really make it through the 'rebuilding' process without getting extremely lucky in the draft, swinging a big free agent, or making a massive trade.

Our young players will develop, hopefully enough so to aid in turning this team into a perennial playoff participant, but to reach that point of critical mass where young developing talent breaks through of its own accord is rare, and in my opinion, getting lucky in the lottery is even rarer. Like most teams in this league (and especially in the east) we'll be low or middling for a while and we just have to take the opportunity to break through when it presents itself.

Plan well, scout well, trade well; that's all BC can do right now.

Expiring contracts are so overrated. I'm sure BC tried to trade him and got no real offers. His contract comes off the books at the end of the season and we are in a good financial position. BC has to repair a system that has been flawed since Isiah Thomas/Grunwald/Babcock. He has done much better than them and has had the last piece of that era (Bosh) removed from the team. Patience and we will see what he has planned.

I hope your right, but there hasn't been any visible signs of a plan.

I guess he tried to shop him around only to find no beneficial trade for us. At least we save money.

we save more money if we keep him and have his full contract off our books to use next season, if this buyout is true then its clearly BC just trying to help peja out by giving him a chance to get picked up by 1 of the contending teams this year

what do you mean by this? we save the same money next year because his full contract is gone either way. and we save even more money this year because the buyout is for less than the full salary. not sure what you mean here...?

BC came in after Wayne Embry smoothed everything out nicely with the trade of Jalen. One of the reasons he came here was due to the lack of any flaws.

Because Peja at 15 mil had negative value.

Bayless > Jack
Bayless > Jack and Peja
Bayless + Peja + Raptors spending the buyout money = Jack and Cap Room and Releif

True Wayne Embry did come in to smooth things out. For the most part I don't understand what goes on in NBA management board rooms, but nonetheless I am confident in BC. I may raise an eyebrow to some of the things he does but I am sure buying out Peja is best for the Raptors
