Arrow Paul Jones: What to do with Calderon when he's back

Quote:
The big questions come when Calderon is healthy. Does he get his starting job back and what do you do with Banks? Do you keep him active?

In all fairness, Toronto has dealt with this situation once already and the precedent has been set in some sense. When T.J. Ford was injured in the 2007-08 season and playing very well at the time of his mishap, he was not reinserted into the starting lineup when he was healthy enough to play.

Ford didn’t like it, he articulated it and it caused a stir, but he still had to sit on the bench while Calderon ran the team as a starter. Ford eventually was put back into the starting lineup but the damage was done as Ford was dealt during the following off-season after Calderon signed a new deal.

That being said, Calderon should not come back until he is 100 per cent healthy as the team seems to have found a nice rhythm of late.

It says here that if the team is still going well, Calderon should come off the bench and work his way slowly back into the lineup facing some second unit players the same way Ford did a couple of seasons ago.

He might not like it, but in the end, it’s who finishes the game, not who starts and with Triano currently playing four starters (Bosh, Bargnani, Turkoglu and Jack) during crunch time in the fourth quarter with a rotating wild card player, that might just turn out to be Calderon’s spot when he is fully recovered.

calderon + jack = backcourt
in crunchtime????
we struggle to get stops in crunchtime as it is, throwing Calderon in DEFINITELY would not make it any easier

keep jose on the bench and let him get his minutes coming off of it.
he excels vs. 2nd team players and is a much better all around scorer/distributor than jack.

with him running the second unit, he can look for his own offense and have jack and turk together to start the games which seems to be working rather well

Jose should be eased back into the starting line-up. So like one week when he comes back with Jack starting then after that week Jose starts again. This way Jose regains his former self

We just don't need Hedo making plays while two pg's wait for chances to get shots. If Jose is going to play with Jack at the end of games, then they might as well trade Hedo. It just doesn't work. Jose is going to have to accept a sixth man role. It's something he could excel at - and actually has more than he has as a starter.

Well, Triano seems pretty set on playing them both together so get used to it.

As much as i like caldy its time for him to get dealt the problem with that is he has to play to get his stock up again otherwise we'll get shit for him, but wait did Calderon sign a contract last off season or the one before, cause isnt there a real that you can't deal someone just signed or sometin like that

That was just an avoidance issue though wasn't it? Now he's had the decision made by default through injury. He can't just pretend that it didn't net results. If he goes back to negating not just Hedo, but really all three guys, then I don't see how Colangelo could have hired such a boob.

Triano will do with Calderon whatever BC tells him to.

Let's face it, the right thing to do right now is to have Jose come off the bench. Like LX said: it's where he's played his best basketball.
If Jose really wanted to set the league on fire this year he would have come to camp ready to go. Chris did. What did Jose do all summer? Lost his starting spot that's what.

as much as i agree with a lot of what is being said here, the success with jj in the starting lineup had a lot to do with schedule as well. triano and bc might give jose the benefit of the doubt for that.

Methinks Jose would handle it fine coming off the bench. It's JJ that would have the problem being demoted.

Fair is fair and JJ deserves to keep that starting position.

This is so ridiculous. Why would you trade your best pg ? Why does everyone think that Calderon would do better then Jack with the second unit....you want your best pg playing with the second unit ? Its funny though that Calderon still has better stats then Jack and Calderon played all his games against a touger stretch of games. Jack was shit when he started the first month in a half. Everyone was complaining we paid too much for a back up. Jack has been around for a few years and not once has he ever got a lick at being an all star. Sorry guys Jose when healthy is way greater then Jack. Our offence has gotten worse since Jose when down and all this talk about our improved defence is a combination of weaker schedule and better support from our 2.3.4.and 5 spot. To win in this league you need a allstar pg or someone close and thats Jose. Jack will never be considered an all star.

Is Jose ever going to be healthy? Since the initial injury I have never heard anyone mention he was a 100%. Now he is working through another injury, once again targeting his mobility. His value as a trade may just be above Greg Oden. So the Raptors are stuck with him. Fingers crossed that he can play his way back in to this line up, in any rotation. Other wise he may just become 8 million in dead weight.

What do you guys think you'll get for Jose? He's a good player and I won't trade him for a bag of potatoes. We just have to find a way to use our players more effectively. The team has so many new players and naturally it's taking time to adjust.

I don't think there's any precedent that would suggest that either Calderon or Jack would be dissatisfied coming off the bench. In similar circumstances in the past, both have shown an ability to be flexible and accomodate the team's needs. I'm not convinced that Jack starting will make a big difference (I think the memory of Raptors fans is too short and we haven't played any tough competition lately), but I don't see why they shouldn't ride this out till it's broken.

They are pretty equal when it comes to their skill sets. That's what makes the combination so lethal and that's why most of us were so excited when we heard that Jack signed last summer.

I'd go with the hot hand (until otherwise proven). Right now that's Jack. If Jack's form falls down a notch or two, Jose will gladly step in.

To me, it's less about who starts, and more about actual minutes. I think they will end up splitting their time pretty evenly.
