Exclamation Paul Jones: Peja wasn't really hurt

Quote:
A little bit of action, or maybe we should say transaction, went down Thursday as the Toronto Raptors bought out Peja Stojakovic.

For those of you that had your bogus meter on high about his injury, you were right.

There were always questions and whispers, but in these eyes, when you never know a players' pain threshold, or how they feel, you just have to take their word for it.

As for Stojakovic's time in Toronto, it was a two-sided affair in that it was another case of a veteran player not wanting to be in Toronto at the end of his career to be part of a young team's rebuilding phase.

The difference between him and Alonzo Mourning is two games in uniform.

There's one side that says at least he was professional, showed up and kept his mouth shut. Then there's the other side that says, he totally duped the fans for never wanting to be here.

Was it a good idea to trade for his expiring contract? Yes, but when nobody wanted to take it on in a deal and he decided he wanted to play for a Western contender, a buyout occured. In the big picture for Toronto it's about developing young players and having cap flexibility when the new CBA is finally put in place.

But there are some that say the organization should not have done it because of the fallout and perception that it continues to perpetuate about Toronto around the league. The bottom line: it's a case of Stojakovic wanting to win at this point in his career and it wasn't happening in Toronto. In fairness, the organization probably wasn't going to play him ahead of the young guys, but he could have had an impact in mentoring some of them before he left for a better situation.

I don't like the way it happened because it propagates stereotypes about Toronto for the uneducated and misinformed. In truth, it's more about winning, or not winning in this case as opposed to living in the actual city.

um, note to jones - we didn't make the trade because of peja, we did it to get rid of jack and acquire bayless. The other pieces were just added to make it work. If we get ajinca and a 2nd rounder, that's just gravy. We basically turned jack into ajinca, bayless, a 2nd rounder and a ton of cash, while leaving our cap space pretty much in the same position.

I clicked the link and watched the video of Jones and E. Smith. After listening to what Smith had to say, and seeing how passionate he was about what he was saying, it will be interesting to see if Peja suits up for another team within the next 10 days.

I'm glad they finished the article with...:

Because I don't think Peja is opposed to the city. He helped make the trade from New Orleans happen. He gave up the trade kicker so that they could make the salaries work. If actually hated the city itself, he could have tried to block the trade. If he's lying about his injury (big if), then it seems he might have thought Toronto was a nice place to chill for a while before heading to the next destination. *shrugs shoulders*

Based on what is available to us, that's most likely correct. But Jones seems to be upset about "perception" of the organization. Also, perhaps he is upset that Peja didn't play and light it up from 3 for a few games while BC worked out an actual real trade. Funny thing is, trading him might not have helped the Raps if only shit contracts were available. Maybe BC didn't want to trade him, and also didn't want to pay his full salary on behalf of MLSE. It would be interesting to know if BC is mad at Jones and Smith for reporting the story this way. I wouldn't be surprised if BC thinks they are just attracting negative attention to the outcome.

Edit - on the other hand, this could be part of the spin related to the allegations that the Raps were involved in a side deal. Blame Peja! The Raps had no idea he was healthy enough to play and ready to sign with Dallas immediately!

It's Peja. I was more worried about the perception of the team for having Peja. Knowing that he was being purposefully shelved made me quite happy.

Whatever...we didnt' bring him in for us, we did it to get Bayless and get rid of Jack/Banks. Of course he doesn't want to play here because we're not winning. He wouldnt' have played in New jersey or the Wolves or the Clips or the Cavs or any such team either. This isn't a Toronto thing.

This happened with MOurning as well.
I follow Basketball a fair bit, but not many of the other teams as closely.
Does this sort of thing happen often. Or is it just toronto.

did i have the impression big money player can do wahtever they want even don't play, than they get a paycheck about 1 million per month.

i don't understand how thing work in sport. because in every other job you can found or
you lied about your healty situation or you play your star and don't produce or anything who don't please the boss = you are fired.

what the fuck sportaccept about this guys !
they make millions just to grab a ball and make entertainment, and they become more princess than a real one.

i'm not against money, but at least i respect an Amir Johnson who is really injure and play every game, than an peja or VC or else who every time they have some "bobo" play their diva.

i mean we make they have this money, by going to the game, by buying some stuff, etc... they have no real respect for fan in fact.
but have they forget without fan they are nothing.

but like owner don't care about fan, i don't think this will change soon.

Thats was me.

But in all fairness, I was actually right. He wasn't sitting because he was a pussy, he was simply not playing.

Meh, he's washed up anyhow.

Get rid of jack? I know, what a horrible contract he had. We never needed him, like for, you know when Calderon goes down every two weeks. Oh, and his contract! Man I'm suprised we even traded him. 5 million a seaon, way overpaid!!!!!!

Not.

Cuban said when Caron Butler went down with a season-ending knee injury in early January, he called Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo and asked if Toronto would be interested in buying out Stojakovic, who has barely played for this season. Colangelo replied, “’We’d like to try to trade him first, but yeah,’” said Cuban, who asked for and received permission from Colangelo to speak with Stojakovic’s agent, David Bauman.

Mavs GM Donnie Nelson expressed his interest in Stojakovic to Bauman and said, “‘If you can work out a buyout with the Raptors, would you come to the Mavs?’” Cuban said. “He goes, ‘Yeah.’ So he basically had committed to us weeks ago.”

the situation with mourning and peja is slightly different
peja came and played for us, we were the ones that didn't want him here in the end and mutually agreed on this buyout
mourning like refused to come after the trade and forced the buyout, in fact i think he forced trade from the nets first, so he screwed 2 teams
i believe that peja did get hurt playing with us but it was only for like a week or so and then he got better but we chose to not play him, i mean he was sitting on the bench every night with the team
