Question Paul Jones: Is Colangelo Broadway bound?

Quote:
There have always been conspiracy theories that Colangelo would end up in New York at some point, once Donnie Walsh was tired of the circus revolving around the franchise. It was also rumoured that the 'Commish' had lobbied the 'poobahs' at the top of the pyramid in New York to oust Isiah Thomas and bring in Bryan's dad, Jerry, to run the Knicks. It seemed like yet another telling sign that Bryan would eventually be running the Knicks. But it's another team close by that now supposedly has Colangelo on its radar: The New jersey Nets.

Hey, with the change in ownership and the Nets slated for a move to Brooklyn, Colagnelo would end up in the Big Apple, just not running the Knicks. Want more fodder, well how about the fact that Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment has not yet picked up the option on Colangelo's contract for next season. You can bet that picking up the option would undoubtedly morph into a discussion about some type of multi-term extension but to date, nothing has happened.

So who is this new owner in Jersey? Oh, it just happens to be a rich Russian fellow named Mikhail Prokhorov. Hmmm, do you think he might be looking to make his mark and possibly seeking the help of someone that knows not only the NBA market but with the game being a more global one, a guy who is plugged in internationally as well? Yep you got it. There folks, is how Bryan Colangelo, and his assistant general manager Maurizio Gherardini are connected to New Jersey.

OK, let's talk history here. So how did Colangelo end up in Toronto? That's right, Robert Sarver, at the time the new owner in Phoenix was supposedly hemming and hawing in giving Colangelo a new deal in the Valley of the Sun and voila, Colangelo is suddenly running the Raptors. Others say Sarver never wanted Colangelo and Colangelo didn't want to work for Sarver and believe what you want, but the bottom line is, Colangelo up and left. Colangelo has shown from the wheeling and dealing in Toronto that he is not afraid to make bold moves. So I ask you, do you think he would go to New York, er, New Jersey? It says here it could happen in a New York minute.

Is that unnerving for Toronto fans? Well it could be. Many have their opinions on the degree of success of the Colangelo era but if the Raptors make the playoffs, regardless of what happens in the first round, they have come from a 27-win outfit to a group that will have made the post-season in three of his four seasons at the helm.

Maybe he's talking about when they move?

There is a Broadway in Brooklyn.

That could be a while from now though. I really don't think the Nets are going to move to newark on a short lease. The brooklyn idea was never a solid one to beging with. As for Newark - New arena and potential cheap lease will problably woo the ownership to stick around for a while.

its going to take at least 3 years to build the arena as well and thats if there are no more roadblocks
they signed a 2 year lease for Newark already

Considering they haven't even broken ground on the arena - and it's supposed to be part of this huge multi-billion dollar project with residential and commercial areas, the move to Brooklyn won't be probably for another 5 years at least.

I thought it was the Italian guy he wanted anyway
Colangelo might leave and so might Bosh, Caldy might be traded
when something solid comes around then we'll worry

I would think he'd want to finish what he started and it doesn't sound like MLSE is intrusive, the Russian guy might be more controlling

Well if MLSE wants BC to stay just lock him up. YOu have an option just tell him to throw it away and sign an extention.

Don't want him or can't extend him? Let him walk this summer

Good thought. I guess it has to do with a coach/GM being under contract and wanting out is the only way it could really happen.

Yeah, a 20 minute drive if you don't run into traffic, which is pretty much certain to happen. So really, that 20 minute drive is more like 35-40.

Colangelo here to stay

Quote:
As long as the Raptors are relevant, in other words are winning, thereís no reason for Colangelo wanting to get out.

If the team is able to go on a significant post-season run, Colangelo will be validated, if he isnít already.
Quote:
Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Ltd. has the option to extend Colangelo, a no-brainer in the wake of Colangeloís makeover of the team and the Raptorsí continued emergence in the East.

Itís just a matter of time before an extension gets announced. How long and under what terms at what amount remain unclear.

Quote:
Before the weekend car tragedy that claimed Brendan Burke, there was a sense that something was afoot vis-a-vis an extension for Colangelo.

The bottom line is that thereís no reason, other than the normal issues involving ego and money, for MLSEL to sever its relationship with Colangelo, whose image, style and productivity make him the perfect executive to run the business of basketball.

On Feb. 28, four years would have officially elapsed since Colangelo arrived on the Toronto scene.

Itís almost a foregone conclusion that heíll be a part of the sporting climate for years to come, despite what the whispers have some suggesting.

Didn't Colangelo write off those rumours recently and give a verbal confirmation that he was going to stay in Toronto long term?
