Exclamation O'Neal admits sitting out games while healthy last year

Jermaine O'Neal admitted to the media early Friday morning that he made the decision to sit out a good portion of Indiana's schedule last year as a career move, according to The Toronto Star.

"When I sat out all those games last year, it was a career move," O'Neal told the Associated Press. "I knew what the situation was. I knew what the significance of me staying away from the game, rehabbing the leg and getting the knee back to its normal usage was."

He played in just 42 games for the Pacers during the 2007-08 season.

Awesome...

Which means his Knee should really be 150% by the time the season tips off.

I don't know about you but this reminds me of a certain someone that used to play in Toronto in the past, who admitted to "dogging it"

I wonder what Raptor fans would think if Chris Bosh in two years he's traded and then says i didn't play much last season because it was acareer move. His reputation would take a hit IMO..

Chris Bosh did say that he needed to sit out longer than he wanted to last season, to make sure he was fully recovered for the good of his career. Jermaine said he wanted to get the knee back to normal. He came back too early the time before and how did that work out? Vince Carter said that he didn't play as hard as he could have. Please let's not be comparing JO to VC. It's been hard enough trying to stomach the comparisons of VC with Bosh all because he said the word franchise. We've got a ball team here now. A legit one. That doesn't mean automatic success. But it should mean that we all don't need to try to inject the next wave of emotional paralysis at every turn. This is the best team on paper we've seen, and there is nothing but character guys. There's just no need to spice things up with storylines from the Bold and the Beautiful.

And on top of everything else, the Pacers couldn't trade the guy in the condition that he was in while he was "dogging it". Does anyone really think that Larry Bird wanted him out there possibly making his knee worse and screwing his chances of making a deal for another season?

Thank you.

Trying to get healthy so you can continue your career and return to playing at a high level is not even remotely similar to dogging it and not playing hard beacause you're a lazy, unmotivated twat.

It's not that shocking. Guys do it all the time.

D Wade and Marion both did it last season. Bosh basically did the same thing under a different name when he sat with plantar fasciitis.

It just makes sense. These guys aren't indestructable.

As to Kuzzy's comparison -- comparing this guy to Vince is laughable. Vince was a class 1 whiner for the end of his career in Toronto.

Jermaine didn't bitch and moan about his injuries. He sat when he knew he could play to get his knee to 100% when the team wasn't going anywhere and the season was already lost.

Well i could understand why. Maybe he didn't wanna force the leg/knee too much so it'll get even worse than it was. But I just hope he doesn't do that in TO thats all i am saying.

All i can say is he better start staying healthy because the next two seasons he's playing for his next contract. And if it's more of the same (missing alot of games) his next contract which could be his last will be half the money he makes now. This is one reason why i think he'll turn it around.

O'Neal had doctors backing him, Carter didn't. O'Neal didn't give plays away to the other team in the dieing seconds of a game, Carter did. O'Neal didn't act like a big enough douche bag to piss his coach off to the point where he knocked him off the trainers table, Carter did. O'Neal is known to be tough as nails, Carter is not. Carter is a fucking pussy.

I read a brief interview with JO where he basically said sitting out some games was a "career move". At first i thought this sounded shady, but with the millions of dollars and the relatively short career span, i really cant blame a player for doing whats best for him and his family long term. Hopefully he comes in next year eager to bounce back and brings us a defensive presence we are sorely lacking!

Yup, I already mentioned that to people about a week and half ago when a handful complained that getting Jermaine meant we'd be getting an "oft-injured has been". Sure he's been injured, but I have no doubt it was also grossly exaggerated too.

ya so what... is this supposed to shock some of you?
players do this all the time...
just because a guy feels healthy but decides to sit out doesnt mean he's dogging it; it means he's not confident enough to go out there and play at 100%.
And yes, unfortunately (or fortunately - depending on how you see it), this is a business. this is a career for these guys. alot of the times i'm sure they dont want to play because they feel they may hurt themselves more or may rush into action too quickly.
although it may seem like a bitch move, a would bet my bank account that miami fans probably wish wade would have sit out the whole season last year instead of play and bang up his body even more.
they won 15 games and get 2nd pick in the draft and now have a worn down superstar... its a waste really. if they could go back in time, i guarentee they have him sit out the season.
