One Austin F. Rivers

This mock draft differs from most others. It is at least by one of the more reputable sports outlets.

It tends to make sense though. At first, I didn't know whether the Raptors pick up Austin Rivers with J. Lamb still on the board. But Rivers definitely is very capable of putting it on the floor. He also has a high motor, can finish and can shoot from outside..... all things Casey wants. Rivers may also utlimately be the guy who allows a bulked up Demar to play the 3.

All you Rivers supporters, I might be able to see it too at #8-ish.

Casey could mentor Rivers, would love to see Casey put him under his wing if he came to TDOT

Grizz 05-04-2012 07:28 PM

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

He's the quintessential player who looks great in a mixtape and bad on game tape. I'd have no problem taking him in mid to late teens, where I think he's worth the risk, but not at 8.

ha-haaa. We did not tank well enough, so we can either draft guys with demonstarted skill and some question marks or go ahead and trade the pick.

Besides, when we play Boston, Doc Rivers will take it easy on his boy.

And, I'm even more afraid of big men with question marks.

Ball Don't Lie 05-04-2012 08:30 PM

He's a shorter Jamal Crawford. Why would we want him? He sucks on defence, and with the way he plays offence hes likely going to have to be a 2 guard in the NBA, and him guarding 2s is laughable. He's almost for sure going to be one of those scorers off the bench that plays no defence that could shoot his team in or out of a game and make his coach want to rip his hair out. I dont think Casey would like him, and if we picked him I'd be super pissed.

Fixxxer 05-04-2012 11:18 PM

Doc would then be a Toronto fan

DocHoliday99 05-04-2012 11:33 PM

Already am a fan :) although I love how some keep talking in absolutes. I think Rivers will surprise a lot of people or he could bust, same as everyone else in the draft and that includes AD. I'm jut not so fast to bash with absolutism. I agree with Ammos points however I'd rather see Barnes or Beal. Realistically I only give it a 3.5% chance of it happening.

Lol if beal goes 2nd I'll eat your shorts. And sullinger at 7? No credibility. If we take rivers at 8 I'll go mental.

Ammo 05-05-2012 06:43 AM

Rivers would have been top 3 in Bargnani's miserable draft year. He's likely an instant offense type of player.

I also agree that mixtapes have led many down the garden path. So have scouting reports.
Having said that, I would probably have wet my pants if I Demar came into the league shooting and ball handling like that.

rapsmannn 05-05-2012 07:01 AM

we shouldn't get invested in the draft, pretty sure bc is going to make a trade, the funny thing is i've been obsessed with the draft and ncaa tournment, and now lately after we finished 8th have come to the realization that the draft pick will be traded for a guy in his mid twenties who fits well in the long term future of the raptors which bc has always stated, meaning jv being the youngest of the core and andrea being the oldest of the core, so i expect a player in that age group

Yup agreed.
If we don't by luck get a higher pick than 8. BC will probably packaging it to bring in a free agent in a sign & trade.
There are many options at BC's disposal this summer.

Why does it have no credibility with Sullinger at 7?

It was related to Beal as well. But sullinger because he would be the 3rd PF selected (mostly this), he's not quick, not athletic, more like taking Big Baby Davis at 7 (too early in this draft) and mocks I read have him between 9 and 14, and I think that's generous.

sorry buckeyefan

TBH, I'd be very, very surprised if Rivers didn't turn out to be a good player. His dad was an NBA player AND coach.... He grew up around the game.... Those things alone bode well for his transition from college into the pros.

Not saying that he'll come in and set the world on fire but a lot of people had similar reservations about Steph Curry. Jus' sayin'.

It is all good. Fair points. I could see Sullinger going 7th but I agree that he is more likely in the 10-12 range. I think he is a better Big Baby Davis in the NBA. Not a star but a solid starter.

As for Rivers. I don't know if going back to Duke would have helped. His game did not fit their offense. Like ToRap said in the post above this, I really think he will be a good pro.

JoeyJoJo Shabbadu 05-05-2012 05:03 PM

The way Davis is playing right now almost makes me wanna change my mind though :)

Ammo 05-06-2012 04:22 PM

Bottom line is I'm not seeing the guy we bitterly regret not drafting at #8, so trading it when a good deal shows up is a no-brainer. But if they keep it. things will get very interesting.

Curry was great off the ball, using his teammates screens to score, and showed he was a very good passer in college as well. I havent seen any of that from Rivers. And Curry is a much better jumpshooter than Rivers as well, and I dont see Rivers ever becoming as good on screen roll as Curry. I just dont like how much Rivers holds the ball and his lack of creation off the dribble for his teammates.

The MVP of West Hollywood 05-06-2012 07:21 PM

I am very very certain that we're not taking Rivers because he's a poor man's version of Damian Lillard who will likely be available. And I'm less than sold on us drafting Lillard anyways. BC has to either fill the PG/SF hole or duplicate a position in the attempt to get an all-star. Rivers/Lillard does neither.

I'm expecting whoever's there between Lamb, Barnes and Sullinger with my sleeper being Arnett Moultrie. Moultrie is a better prospect than Jones III. He actually knows how to use his athleticism/skill combo effectively offensively and is actually a respectable rebounder, but classic case of all that being wiped away when you're a junior instead of freshman/sophmore. Being a younger player with the ability to add skills is regarded as more valuable than being 1-2 years older and actually having those skills (eg. Jonny Flynn going 6 Ty Lawson 18 when Lawson actually had the 15 feet and out game Flynn was expected to develop LOL)
