The official start Carlos Delfino thread

This is it. What do you guys think? I for one have been thinking it for the past month or so. Guys solid, a nice ball handler, and leads the team in charges. Not to mention he seems more willing to get to the hole than moon and strokes from long range more proficiently.

I think Moon needs some time on the pine, and I think mitchell should say to him his playing time will be determined by the energy and aggressiveness he shows coming off the bench. with kapono coming off the bench, he's like two or three shooters from any other team because he can hit from anywhere on the floor outside of ten feet from the basket.

Belsius 12-25-2007 01:14 PM

Gotta love em. hes an improved version of garbajosa except for his playing IQ, he always fights for every ball. Only think I dont like is he misses some important freethrows when they really count and sometimes takes to many shots.

Torontosaurus 12-25-2007 02:06 PM

You got my vote. hopefully it will motivate Moon to bring it consistently.

Ball Don't Lie 12-25-2007 02:16 PM

I dont like it yet. Delfino likes to initiate and shoot a lot and that isnt what we need out of our starting SF role. If Moon still hasnt gotten back to where he was by the end of the road trip then Smitch should consider it, but right now I think it's a bit premature.

ClingRap 12-25-2007 04:02 PM

I disagree. though I dont think leaving moon out there any longer is life and death, this team is lacking in the toughness department, and the toughest son of a bitch on this team is delfino in my opinion. this starting lineup needs that in your face defender. moon isnt that guy, as much as i love him and his athleticism, he's getting outworked and the effort is come and go. we need an initiator according to sam, and i dont see delfino doing things that isnt in the flow.
he reads the defense and has shown a nice drive and kick game, as well as the ability to distribute in the lane when people close out on him.

Delfino Starting ???
uh nooo...
Calderon Delfino Kapono
3 deadly weapons of the bench..
Moon starts us off with some good defense...
lets keep it like tht...
he'll get through this rookie slump.

Too many people overreact on the Raptors board to a player who has a few bad games. First TJ last year after injury, Bosh, Humphries having 4 or 5 good games straight is now some sort of God, everyone calling Bargs a scrub, now Jamario? Not saying you're part of that kind of thinking cling because youre a good poster, it just gets tiresome with the overreactions especially since we're on the toughest streak of games we'll be on all year.

Jamario is still getting used to playing Calderon most of the time instead of Ford dont forget. I dont think its that his effort comes and goes, I think we should put him on the weakest offensive player and let him roam like AK does. You dont see UTA putting AK on Kobe and such. Moon was at his best when roaming and being around the basket, now Sam is putting him in the role of stopper and I dont think thats the best thing for his skillset, especially since hes so skinny. Hes good in some matchups vs other teams best players who are built like him, but besides that we should put him on other teams role players and let him roam and become the best on the boards he once was, specially with Bargs back in the lineup.

Agreed. I've actually liked Carlos in the starting line-up since about early november. i like moon, a lot, but i think he's nicer coming off the bench in my opinion. he had a nice game against the clips, though magette was a bit of a handful for him strength wise. he might just be really tired.
so yeah, it isn't me panicking at all. i just think he'd be nice in the starting line-up with his slashing/outside game, and his hardnosed defense. both players are pretty equal in terms of steals, obviously jamario is way better above the rim, blocking shots, but delfino has that edge, and having him on the floor for extended minutes with bargs might have that spread to him as well.

Delfino should continue to come off the bench.

1. With Bargs starting, Moon is again in perfect position to spend more time closer to the basket offensively.

2. Coming off the bench, Delfino has more chances to touch the ball more often. IMO he is most effective offensively when the ball goes through him or in the open floor - and the former is easier to achieve coming off the bench, especially considering the unknown that is TJ Ford at the moment and Delfino's playmaking ability.

This is what I am enjoying about RF lately, lots of intelligent posts. Not that I agree with everything you say here, but it's well thought out. You're dead on with the overreaction thing, that is Toronto's nature, whether it is basketball, hockey, baseball, whatever. I'm not sure what it is, but let's hope that we aren't spreading that attitude to all of our international members.

With Jamario, I have to kind of defend Sam on this one (*gasp*). Sam has been playing Jamario as a stopper because that is how Jamario defined his game when he started getting more minutes. He was shutting down opposing teams' best players and also bringing energy and rebounds, so once it became a talking point in the media, Sam had to confirm that Jamario was going to play against those big players. I think now Jamario is getting a little too concerned with who he is up against and is overthinking his ability. He does need to roam a little more and use his athleticism to his benefit instead of trying to "lock down" on guys.

I've been a fan of Hump since he got here, simply because he does what he is told. As soon as he tries to turn his game into something it isn't (like when he starts taking jumpers), Sam sits his ass down and then Hump comes back with a decent game. I think for what the Raptors are paying him (remember, he just signed an extension too) and considering that we got him for Hoffa, you have to appreciate what he brings to the floor.

And another note...somebody said earlier that Delfino is the toughest Raptor on the court? Well, he takes a lot of charges, but that doesn't mean he's the toughest guy on the floor. I'll put TJ, Hump and Rasho ahead of Delfino. Nothing against Delfino, but I just have those guys ahead of him.

Sick, Wicked and Nasty! 12-27-2007 08:02 AM

I love Carlos' role of the bench..he is what we need to help control the pace of the second unit. I dont' beleive in breaking what's already fixed and moving him to start would be just that. I think he plays well enough to start, but i just think you don't mess with success.

BballWatcher 12-27-2007 12:38 PM

I think Delfino is playing great and I love him playing in crunch time.

With that said, I'm totally against starting him right now. He's still up and down a bit, and I think coming off the bench keeps him hungry.

Give him more than under half a season before we decide he's starting material.

I totally agree.

8 points, 10 boards, 3 blocks, 2 steals.

Jamario was fantastic last night. He's right to be in the starting lineup until he starts making big mistakes for multiple games. He's fantastic as the roamer and he hides Bargs' rebounding deficiency. Hopefully the new 'drive the ball to the hole for the shat' sticks with not only the team, but Jamario especially. Those 2 dunks were SICK.
