RON AFFLALO - Orlando Magic

If the Raptors become skittish about re-signing DeMar DeRozan this season, either because his play tapers off or he makes noises about being dissatisfied, pursuing a guy like Afflalo makes a lot of sense. He can score, he can really hit the three-point shot and he defends (although his commitment to defense did waver last season).

i like the kleiza for chandler one. (mentioned in article.)

like article said, minimal risk, contracts match, take a flier on chandler.

edit: quite like the derrick williams one as well. A lot more tricky that one though. Apparently williams still sees himself as a SF, i don't think he'll ever make it as a SF, he's a PF for me. Ross for Williams is an interesting one though. Then make the Bargs for gay trade happen and we've got:

lowry/cald/lucas
derozan/fields/AA
gay/AA/Fields/kleiza
williams/Ed/Amir/Kleiza
valanciunas/Gray/Amir

Kleiza and Ed for Chandler and a contract... it makes so much sense and Ujiri and Colangelo have got to be tight still.

try and get denver to give us their 1st rounder in that deal? will probably (from their perspective,) be a late 1st rounder and could help us get a piece in the draft when we'll probably lose our pick to OKC.

I doubt we'd get a sweetener on that... if anythinig, maybe it's not taking back a second contract.

yeah, you're prob right. was just hoping Ed's 13th pick and potential would still carry some weight and denver would bank on making play-offs and not having a high pick. Also would take their extra contract to keep it even in that regard.

LKZ, AA, 2nd rounder for Chandler. Don't want to lose ED. W Chandler has been brutal winshares/48 minutes wise with the nuggets. Last season they were 9.7 net points better (combined offense and defense/100 possessions) with him on the court. Also, raps are helping them out salary-wise.

I was thinking of a 3 team trade instead though it would be difficult as Smith is an UFA in the summer - certainly not ideal.

Why not in the summer of 2013...

Atlanta
Out: S/T Smith
In: Bargs/LK (I'm sure he will pick up his player option)
Bargs' deficiencies would be covered well with an established player like Al on one the other side. Would be a different look for the Hawks and honestly, the Hawks play better with Al being the man there....something he wouldn't have to worry about with Bargs there as Bargs would defer to him. HA, might even be scared of Al enough to play defense consistently. LK for depth there or even waive LK, (Atlanta needs help though).

Memphis
Out: Gay/Wroten
In: Smith
Smith wants to go so why not send him to a contender. The Grizz will want something decent for Gay and the Raps do not have the assets. Thinking the Grizz will give the Raps Gay for cap relief doesnt seem like an option; seeing as the new owner Pera outright stated he doesn't want to move Gay right now (Heisley maybe). I don't think the Grizz will go far with Gay playing with Randolph but I do believe that a starting line-up of Conely/Allen/Smith/Randoph/Gasol would. That line-up would both be a defensive AND offensive nightmare IMHO.

Raptors
Out: Bargs/LK/cash
In: Gay/wroten

Well....it's Gay and no more Bargs.

I like that. Certainly an all - in move but damn that would be a nice starting lineup. I think Memphis accepts that deal. ATL should accept that deal but they may not, it'll be close.

Won't happen. Smith is an ufa this year. Why would he go to the Raps?

I don't think Memphis touches that deal at all - there is no advantage in that deal. Scrub players and cap relief? After Gay the Grizz are quite weak, and Allen is a UFA as well this year. Remove those two and you're left with Conely/Randolph/Gasol and incredibly weak wing players.

And for some reason, posters here keep forgetting that the new Grizz owner has out right stated that Gay is going no where at the moment. Pera is a different kind of owner, he can still dunk and likes to be at practice with these guys. I sense nothing from that team that suggests that they are ready to blow everything up cause sending Gay away for nothing is what that move would be. Besides, Gay is averaging 19.2ppg/6.4rpg and the Grizz are at 4-1 right now and the real salary crunch will come next summer so, crappy year I can see it but if they go far in the playoffs tell me why they would move Gay without some sort of a stud in waiting coming back on a cheap contract?

There is nothing that makes any sense why the Grizz would do that, especially locking up their frontcourt and Conely for years. Players like Gay don't come along often and they need him as much as we do.

Not until the trade deadline or the summer but the Grizz would have to be doing terrible to justify such a move IMO. If it was the Raps and we had the identical Grizz team (which I would love BTW) would you trade Gay right now?

Memphis is projected to be a luxury tax team by the end of the season. Additionally, the salaries they have for next year without taking into account -Tony Allen (UFA) -would put them in the luxury tax again. If they re-sign Tony Allen for 5-6 million per year, they would be over by 8 million or so which isn’t a good thing seeing how the luxury tax progressively gets worse. Tony Allen is one of the league’s best perimeter defenders and losing him will be a big blow to this team. They could try to unload another contract and re-sign Allen but that would still put them in the tax as their core of Randolph, Gasol, Conley, Gay are taking up close to 80% of their cap space next year. Not to mention, in subsequent years, their salaries keep increasing. If they continue to win, they will probably keep their core intact minus Tony Allen which would still be considered a setback. Memphis has already gone deep into the playoffs without Gay. I think re-signing Allen combined with acquiring a capable wing player, an expiring, and prospect or pick via trade for Gay would be the ideal route to take; enabling the team to continue competing while simultaneously avoiding the punitive luxury tax.
