Unable to find anyone on this side of the Atlantic to fill the 13th man role, the Raptors are about to sign Will Solomon to a contract and finish off their summer shopping season.

(Of course, you regular readers – as regular as this morning, in fact – will know I thought this signing my drag on until late August but guess not).

Spies here and in Israel (my man Eran comes through again, and it wasn't even P.J. Tucker-related), where Solomon once played for Maccabi Tel Aviv, say the 6-2 combo guard is destined to be the next player from overseas to join the Raptors. No idea when the official announcement will come – there’s always paperwork to be done – but it’s a done deal as far as I can glean and could be finished as early as today.

Solomon does seem to have a bit of what the Raptors want in their final player.

He’s 30 years old so he’s been around.

He’s coming off a solid Euroleague season with Turkey’s Fenerbache, where he averaged 17.9 points and 3.9 assists in 21 Euroleague games, stats that aren’t to be sniffed at.

He’s got some NBA experience – he was a second-round pick of the Grizzlies in ’01 and played in 62 games with Memphis in the ’01-02 season.

He’s been all over Europe, spending a season with each of Efes Pilsen in Turkey, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Hapoel Jerusalem and Aris Thessaloniki in Greece before playing the last two seasons with Fenerbache.
Sounds about right.

Clearly all of our speculation on the 13th man was destined to be fruitless from the beginning.

I don't believe this guy was mentioned once.

Decent stats though.

It;s another guy who played with AP. Hopefully it works out better than Maceo. I believe I've liked what I've seen from this guy, but right now my memory is pretty shaky. As far as I can remember, he can get to the rim ok.

Our next Anthony Parker? it would be very nice if he could defend and knew what to do (and what not) in the offense, just a guy who can do the right things without being himself an engine.

I love this - it starts with a bunch of nice defensive highlights. I'm getting a little excited now. I'm pretty sure I remember seeing games where Rick Kamla was shouting his name a bunch.

Nice, thanks for the vid LX

A poor man's Arena's? That could make for an improvement on Agent Zero, especially if he plays D. OK. I need to stop thinking about this now.

I remember Solomon's name from back in the Vancouver days, but I won't pretend I know anything about him or his game. :(

Based on what I've read on his Euroleague experience he seems like a solid acquisition. :)

Here is what I have dug up for my blog.

Jonathan Givony from DraftExpress who's well respected in the basketball community thinks the Solomon signing was fantastic. The only concern he forsee's is that his personality might be an issue. So, I'm not sure what he really meant by that. He might have the potential to be a headcase. Not sure. :confused2:

He also mentioned elsewhere that it would be for the league minimum so he's coming cheap to us too. :dancing:

Will is an NBA talent all day long, a clear-cut rotation guy. The only question mark is about whether his personality will be stable enough for the coaching staff.

Oh ya, and Solomon's style is apparently very much like Mike James according to DraftExpress. :face4:

Superjudge 07-28-2008 03:17 PM

awesome, I liked James.

'trane 07-28-2008 03:18 PM

attitude, not skill sj.

Acie 07-28-2008 03:18 PM

That's fine because Mike James would've been perfect coming off the bench had he been willing to accept that role. As long as he doesn't flap his gums as much...

Superjudge 07-28-2008 03:21 PM

oh.

well James was tenacious and he was agressive and hyper confident. On that team, this wasn't such a good thing. The team was too young and too immateur to be able to facilitate a personality like that. This current line up could handle a Mike James type guy. I like the idea of aquiring a little attitude to be honest.

Just as long as he aint bringin his dogs, or currently vacationing in the Bahamas.

Welcome netanel and thanks for the insight. Although based on what you just said I already like Will less. :(

Colangelo makes a point of only bringing guys with high character, so I guess only time will tell. Like SJ though, I don\'t mind having a guy with a little swagger on this team.
