Doesn't a player have to be signed under the old CBA to be an amnesty candidate?

While Lowry & Barg deliver the efficient offense, let DD provide us some entertainment with couple of cool dunks. I think $42M/4yr was not a bad deal. Looking at DD's current skill sets and achievements? maybe he deserves like $35M/4yr or somewhere around there. Watch him grow for another season, and determine whether his contract extension was good/bad move.

ALSO, imagine Raptors acquiring DD from another team via FA Market... We would have surely paid $50M/4yr from FA market.. We are lucky that we were able to sign him without serious overpay.

Derozan does not deserve this. he does not even deserve 35 mill in 4 years which is what i thought he would get. We're talking about a shooting guard who cant shoot, cant defend, cant create for anyone, cant rebound the ball. theres few he can do on the court.

is he athletic? yes. does he have potential? yes. could he prove me completely wrong and have a breakout season? probably. I like Demar, but i dont understand why a deal especially so large had to be done now, why not let him become a RFA and match an offer. where was the risk in that? Demar is not going to be offered more than this by any other team. why the rush?

and now what was the point in overpaying for another SG that cant shoot in Landry Fields? or in drafting Terrence Ross someone who was supposed to be keeping Demar on his toes and working for his spot? now we have a rookie destined to come off the bench for the next couple of years(and passed up on a potential game changing big man, who even if we didnt want him, wouldve been a solid trade chip). Worst BC signing.

sarcasm?...... why would we have to pay that? no one would ever be that desperate for DeMar DeRozan. he's still only all potential 4 years into his NBA career.

Uhhh... incorrect. You can amnesty any contract at all during the course of this CBA. Not only the ones the were signed under the previous CBA.

Raptors gave DeMar DeRozan a contract extension in a one-team auction based on a dangerous idea: Smith - thestar.com
not a bad article

NBA - Andray Blatche, Carlos Boozer, Darko Milicic possible amnesty candidates - ESPN
Decent explanation. We'll amnesty LKZ once he enacts his PO.

LGR has a good link posted, but just to clarify here, the amnesty provision can only be used on contracts that were signed before the lockout, and only on players who were on your roster at the time (so no amnestying players who are traded after the lockout).

The stretch provision will be usable on DD, but that's not exactly ideal either.

Does anyone remember when Calderon made an extra pass to Derozan in the corner last night and he missed?

Chuck said it was on Calderon to take that shot... I guess that really sums up this contract in a nutshell, don't pass the ball to your starting SHOOTING guard when you need a bucket. Damn.

Calderon was open, is one of the best shooters in the league, certainly the most consistent for this team, and the shot clock was running out. Demar was no more open than Jose and was clearly surprised to receive the pass, as he should have been.

Guess what, in the same situation between Jose taking the shot or passing it last second to Dwyane Wade, he still should have shot. Does that say a lot about Wade's value on a 10 million dollar contract?

JC had a better look on that shot. DD definitely wasn't expecting to receive the ball, which explains why he hesitated. He also got the ball with 2 seconds left on the shot clock, so he had to force up a shot. It was just a bad possession. Live and learn.

i like derozan. He's one of our more talented players. Of course you keep a guy like that on your team. And i also think he's going to still going to improve. People sometimes forget just how young he was when he came into the league.

Money seems a bit high, but what else is new with this team.

My bigger problem is the money tied up in guys like Amir Johnson and my new favorite player Landry Fields. Role players who are just average and on most nights not even noticable.

You're right.

Just seems like we have a shooting guard on a ridiculous $40 million dollar contract who struggles with his primary job, shooting.

Needs to make tough the baskets every now and then. Like when he hit the front of the rim at the end of the game. Frustrating to watch.

if demar can just get his mid range going, and start driving and attacking constantly, it will be worth it. We got other shooters to cover taking the 3

really, did stern force us to sign landry to 6 and derozan to 10? First one well above market and second one when there was no market whatsoever - there was no need to extend him. There was ZERO chance we'd lose derozan, at WORST, his market price would have increased over 10, and that would have been fantastic. I'd rather have a 12 million player who make 12 million than a 7 million who makes 10, which is what we currently have.

The ONLY way this works out to our advantage is if Demar makes a dramatic jump in performance, to basically a near all star level player. You tell me if that's likely.

Unless Stern put a gun to BC's head and instructed him to sign a 2/3 combo that collectively can't shoot or dribble or play quality defense, then I blame BC.

Derozan has improved steadily from his days bricking open 15 footers and solely finishing baseline alley oops, but I don't see much more room to grow. He has a nice post game now, but he rarely beats his man on the perimeter because of still shaky handles and a slow first step. And his shot mechanics won't let him expand his range. Yes he can get to the line and put up some nice scoring games, but he also has a knack for letting opposing 2 guards put up similar numbers. And he doesn't rebound well. BAH! GAH! TWWWIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIXXXX!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Really annoying to hear shooting guards need to be able to shoot.. Haven't you all witnessed last season's perimeter shooting demar? He's not a 3 point shooter ffs yet people are sll demanding it out of him?

Any team in the NBA or most leagues for that matter. Players are overpayed constantly.
