also, if DD got that then BC will hand Lowry the max.
So Lowry gets the max, then what? No SF, a mediocre SG an inefficient PF that can't rebound. We better pray Valanciunas and Ross turn into budding stars or Colangelo can pull off an amazing trade because we're not signing anyone of significance anytime soon.

I can't believe Colangelo would just give up 10 million a year like this without some knowledge DD had a value near this. There had to be offers or hints of offers out there around 8-9 million, or some serious smokescreen. It seems almost nonsensical to believe he doesn't do a shit ton of homework before handing out this much money to a player. Right? Right...?

You can bet your ass that if Lowry avgs close to 19/4/8 + 2 stls he'll be getting no less than $14M/yr.

I don't see why DD can't score 20 points a game if his teammates(and coach) don't freeze him out. He's going to have his bad games like any player, but the dude can play.

DD will worth the money hes getting. His shot and range is so much better this year. He's worked on his low post game so its all good. We are good with Lowry actually very good hes our Westbrook on the team. He will get his 20 shots a game and will be our #1 or #2 option in our offence in every game.
So its Lowry , DD, Bargs as our top 3 options so its becomes so critical that DC gives DD and Bargs some burn with the second unit.Hell I would like to Davis, Bargs,Amir,Anderson and Calderon together with the second unit or DD in for Bargs at the 3. Some how we have to split up time of our starters which will be a good thing because Lowry can score in so many ways. DC will have to tinker some more. We do have the players i really believe we should be able to make the playoffs with what we got here this year. Its does not show yet with our d but it will get better. Book it !

Like I said - based on his past performance, he is not worth 10mil/season. If he plays like he did so far this season or better - he deserves the new salary. Let's talk again when this season is over.

See, it was clear to pretty much everyone in the league that Harden was a max player, a franchise-caliber player. OKC knew that as well and wouldn't give him the money because of the market size and luxury tax and other pure financial considerations that wouldn't matter all that much to a team like the Raptors. Oh, how I wish for a problem like "what do we do with James Harden since we already have Durant and Westbrook?"

interesting article and it kind of aligns with the sentiment that many have on the other board I'm on:

Does DeMar DeRozan's lavish contract spell the end for Andrea Bargnani in Toronto? - Sports Blog | Top Sports Blog | Best Sports News ? Sympatico Sports - The Cheap Seats

Timpchisholm Nov 4, 2012

"Are Andrea Bargnani's days in Toronto numbered?

Something's gotta give.

After inking DeMar DeRozan to an absurd $40-million extension this week, the Raptors now have a combined $53-million dollars invested in DeRozan and Andrea Bargnani, and going forward I don't see how that is a tenable proposition.

The Raptors yearn to establish themselves as a defensive powerhouse in the Eastern Conference, but how is that possible when your two highest-paid players (ignoring Jose Calderon's expiring contract) have so little defensive I.Q. to draw on? Yes, the core around those guys - including Kyle Lowry, Jonas Valanciunas and Amir Johnson - have strong defensive abilities to help prop up the team, but forcing them into double-duty, covering their own assignments as well as attempting to make up for DeRozan's and Bargnani's shortcomings, is not a long-term solution for the club.

So, I say it again: Something's gotta give.

It makes you wonder if DeRozan's outsized contract extension was the beginning of the end of Bargnani's controversial career in Toronto. There is no denying that Bargnani has been tolerated rather than embraced in his six years with the Raptors. His permissive defence, along with his non-existent rebounding and low-percentage shooting, has kept him on the bad side of many fans, and few would shed a tear if he was moved along.

However, Raptors president and GM, Bryan Colangelo, has long been viewed as Bargnani's staunchest supporter, and even when he's offered his brand of terse criticism, he always spoke of Bargnani as a part of the team's core going forward.

Well, he's made the same proclamation about DeRozan this week, mostly in defence of his indefensible contract, and if the club had to throw their fate in with one of them, it would appear that DeRozan is the guy that they are simply more in love with right now.

And make no mistake, if this team wants to take the next step forward as a franchise, they have to throw their fate in with only one of these options.

You simply cannot mount a credible defence with both of these players logging 35 minutes a night, blowing assignments and forgoing rebounding with whatever minutes they're afforded. Similarly, you cannot design a credible offense around two low-percentage scorers that don't pass or hit outside shots consistently (remember, Bargnani has only shot 32.8% from three over the last two seasons).

Coming into the season, I had assumed that DeRozan would be the one that was sacrificed. He simply did so little that contributed towards winning and his contract was eminently more moveable. Of course, was is the operative word there. With his hefty pay raise, the Raptors have clearly signaled that DeRozan isn't going anywhere, which would leave Bargnani with the seat awaiting him on the trading block.

The problem is that Bargnani still represents the team's only frontcourt scoring option. If the club committed to trading him, they'd need to find a way to bring some significant scoring force back in return, as well as some much-needed defensive improvement, or else what's the point in making a trade at all?

The Raptors, for their part, have given no direct indication that Bargnani is on his way out. They have implied it, however, with DeRozan's deal least week. The club can only afford one long term starter that plays sub-par defence AND inefficient offence if they want to crack the Playoffs in the East, and if DeRozan is that guy then Bargnani has to be ushered out.

Or the Raptors could just continue losing. It isn't like they've really shied away from that option historically, either."

I'm not really sure who would want Bargnani if he keeps playing like this. We'll end up getting someone else's headcase or lazy bum in return and be in the same unenviable position.

How bad would it look for BC if he gets us another starting SF after blowing 20 million of Landry? LOL

I think he'd do it if he could get a useful SF who can replace Bargs' production offensively.

Landry backing up the 2 and 3 until Ross is ready is a perfectly acceptable option. Having the starters in DD and the new 3 play 34 minutes a game leaves 28 for Landry. That's a good breakdown for a wing rotation. So a move for a wing is not really problematic for the Fields situation.

Ideally you want an 8 man rotation, especially in the playoffs, and about 3-4 third stringers for situational play. The rest of the roster should be for injuries only. Assuming starters of Jonas, Amir, New SF, DD and Lowry, that leaves Ed as the third big, Landry as the third wing, and Jose as the backup PG. With Gray as your situational C, Kleiza as your situational F, Ross as a situational wing, and Lucas as your situational guard. If Jose gets moved with Bargs in the SF trade, Lucas gets bumped to backup PG and you sign an Uzoh or something for that 3rd string spot.

I used Kleiza instead of McGuire as the situational F due to the lack of scoring options off the bench there, but McGuire could obviously be there as well, since you can dress 13 guys.
