it's short and flexible for the new ownership to come in and decide which direction they want to go in. i wouldn't be surprised if it were the length of the deal that was holding everything up.

this is bittersweet for me. i'm not a fan of BC, but this team needs stability and a direction. i just hope our direction is parting with the softies.

Well, there were pluses and minuses to extending BC before the new ownership comes in. However, IMHO, having him extended brings the element of stability and recognition to the basketball side of the operation while not committing the new management too much. I personally hope he will turn the team's fortune around and will stay here for years to come - after all, he IS our winningest GM by quite a wide margin (I know, the bar hasn't been set too high, but still...).

GM COLANGELO AGREES TO MULTI-YEAR EXTENSION WITH RAPTORS

TORONTO -- Bryan Colangelo will remain the man in charge of rebuilding the Toronto Raptors.

The team's president and general manager agreed to a multi-year contract extension with the Raptors on Tuesday. Colangelo has spent five years at the helm of Canada's lone NBA team, and his contract was set to expire on June 30.

The Raptors picked up a lottery pick after finishing with the third-worst record in the league this past season at 22-60. Colangelo will represent the team at the NBA draft lottery on Tuesday night in Secaucus, N.J.

He made it clear last month that he wanted to remain with the team to continue the rebuilding process.

"I'm committed to Toronto, I'm committed to the country of Canada, I'm committed to this organization in the highest way," he said at a season-ending news conference.

"We've done some positive things. Now we're in a position as we build without Chris Bosh, we're building a good young team here and there are some bright spots on the horizon that I think this market should be excited about."

Colangelo, 45, was named the NBA's executive of the year after the 2006-07 season when the Raptors captured the Atlantic Division title and tied a franchise record with 47 wins. But they've been stuck in a rut since making a first-round playoff exit in 2008.

The Raptors lost all-star forward Bosh to free agency last summer and this season marked the third consecutive year without a playoff appearance.

Colangelo has certainly had his missteps in Toronto. He acquired Jermaine O'Neal and Hedo Turkoglu but both were big busts for the Raptors.

He's also felt the heat from fans for the selection of Italian big man Andrea Bargnani with the No. 1 pick in the 2006 draft. His recent draft history has garnered some top young talent however, with the selection of DeMar DeRozan at No. 9 in 2009 and Ed Davis at No. 13 last year.

There's no word yet on the future of head coach Jay Triano. The Raptors have until mid-June to exercise the option year on his contract.

Good to hear. Long enough to make changes to this team and hopefully turn the franchise around.

IN BC WE TRUST

Awesome to hear!

At the very least, this gives BC a chance to finish what he started. It gives him a chance -over the next couple of years - to turn this franchise around, and if he does, I'm sure he'll be rewarded with a longer extension. The 2-3 year thing also puts the pressure on him a little bit, which can't be a bad thing.

Great deal, love it. I'm a big BC fan, but it's good that it's a 2+1 year contract. Sends a message of "if you're not getting it done, you're gone".

At the end of the day, were there better options out there? Probably not. So I am glad they are sticking with the former exec of the year.

Not a huge BC fan here but I agree with the above.... 2 yrs + 1 team option sounds about right. Should be enough time to see if he's learned anything about building a winner.

I think it's safe to say BC is gonna feel the pressure now to start winning soon since he has such a short contract. I just hope he doesn't feel the need to speed things up too much.

As long as he sticks to a plan he will stay. Everyone in the organization wanted him to stay except one idiot part of the MLSE which is getting sold. Its safe to say BC will be here for a while.

Hes either going to ruin his reputation as a GM or he's going to get this franchise going in the right direction before his term is up. It's sad to say that its looking more like the first part than the last judging by his term so far. I cant take 3 more years of complete suckage so he better work quick. I dont mind if they dont make the playoffs next year, as long as they improve and give consistant effort and look like they have a bright future that will be enough. For next year anyway. After that I need the playoffs.
