My first impression was that the reporter was a goofball for making the comparison, and Oakley had every right to correct him.

I like Reggie Evans, but I wouldn't put him in the same calibre as Oakley.

Charles Oakley was traded for an upcoming center and No. 2 overall pick Marcus Camby.

Reggie Evans was traded for the one-trick pony Jason Kapono.

Yep - it's not a slight against Reggie. They are just two different players entirely. The comparison was a slight to Oak, and showed some real ignorance of who Oakley was as a player, unless you just gloss over the surface.

And since when do you get praise for leading a team to 34 wins? Shit, Bosh led the Raps to 40 wins last season (with a horrible roster) and he barely gets any respect at all.
When the team trades you for the starting backcourt that got the Magic all the way to the NBA Finals and wins only 12 games the next season. Prior to the 08-09 season almost all the experts had the Nets finishing dead last in the East, or even dead last in the league. They were in the playoff race until about 2 weeks to go.

I'm not saying Kidd and RJ had nothing to do with the Nets beating the Raptors. I'm saying that whoever says VC was "broken down" at age 30, or even 32, is lying. He was a top 5 shooting guard until he got traded to the Magic. That's when he started really declining.

Quote:
carter was broken down mentally long before he left toronto. and for any guy with such a weak character, even the slightest injury will hobble him. so yeah, he was broken down more often than not.
No, he was not "broken down more often than not". That's a lie. Look how few games he missed in NJ. He only averaged like 4-5 missed games per year. One season he even played all 82 games. On top of that he was extremely tough when it came to playing through injuries. For example he suffered a bad ankle injury early in 2007-08 (so bad he had surgery on it right after the season ended), yet he played through the injury all season, only missing about 6 or 7 games. He was getting cortisone shots before games mid-season and playing through the pain. Even after they were mathematically eliminated from the playoffs he STILL played out the season.

Even this season he was injured before he got traded to the Suns, but he played through the injury without even mentioning it. It only came out that he had been playing injured after the Suns doctors examined him and made it public.

So the numbers and facts don't agree with your hollow statements. Statements you didn't back up with anything but opinion.

combine this with a nice toss into the 3rd row.... nice game.
Why did Oak not just dunk it? He was like 6'10".

All these pro Oakley arguments are Bullshit.

It's a low class thing to do and a popular type of comment made by former athletes who can't get over their own over inflated sense of worth.

I could give a shit if the guy was a better player or not. Everyone on the planet knows the reporter was referring to the TYPE of player they are. Hard working, so called blue collar players. The context of the question had to do with the fans appreciation for such players in contrast to how they viewed talented players that didn't put in the same type of effort or show the same type of mental toughness.

So, no, it was a no class move and to be honest, i find it sad that you guys don't seem to get it.

Oakley took a perfectly normal comparison, and blew it out of context in some incredibly pathetic attempt to either promote, or protect the long gone image.

It isn't a big deal, really. I'm not making it one either. But if you ask me if it was cool.... I say no. Who the fuck is ANYONE to tell people they can't use their name in the same breath as anothers...... what a crock of shit.

Sad, Sad words from a guy who time is gone and is still not over it.

It was pretty dickish for the reporter to imply that Oakley wasn't a star player, but rather a hard worker. That's not an over-inflated sense of worth. He was an NBA star. Fading by the time he got here, but a star all the same. That's just a fucking fact. The reporter was a knob not to know and understand that, and to patronize the guy as the type of player that "works hard".

Don't listen to Oakley. He's a retired player now, that means he's nothing but an assistant coach. He's just sourgraping that he didn't get a job here in TO - I remember him asking for a job with the Raptors via Twitter! LOL WTF.
