Never shy to share his opinion, Charles Oakley thinks his former head coach in Toronto, Butch Carter, was the missing ingredient to a potential title for last year's edition of the Miami Heat.

"Butch is an accountable guy, he knows what he's doing. Like I told you, if he was the coach of the Miami Heat they would have won the Finals," Oakley said in an interview on Monday with Michael Landsberg on Off The Record. "Because in situations, he's the best, (runs a) great offence, he knows how to prepare. He gets you going, he has fun, but at practice, he'll work you harder than you worked before."

I don't think Oak gives a damn about VC and T-Mac.

^ What does that pic of Oak, Jordan, CP3 & a were-camel have to do w/how you think Oak feels about VC & T-Mac? Oh nevermind

@ TORaptor4Ever Yeah good others recognize that people failed Hoffa, more than anything Hoffa did of himself.

I must amend another statement. In my last post, I said Camby only stopped being soft *AFTER* leaving NYK. What really happened is that he stopped being soft *in* NYK due to Coach Jeff Van Gundy's awsomeness, & he then rewarded Marcus w/the starting nod.

Marcus softness with us stemmed from the same place where it stemmed w/T-Mac; Coach Darrell Walker picking on them while letting that scrub 'franchise player' Damon Stoudemire do whatever. Seriously what were Tracy & Marcus supposed to do, working thier tails off, getting little substance from their coach, and yet 'Mighty Mouse' (more like Minny Mouse; such a pussy...I was *so* happy when we got rid of him back in winter '98) could shoot our team out of games, rarely create for teammates when being the playmaker as a 'franchise point guard' should, do NOTHING on defense, and yet not be called out for any of it! Unbelievable! Seriously where's my 18-20 shots/game if I don't have to be accountable for anything either? I'm taller & faster than Damon too!

Good thing Oak & Vince & co. then helped Tracy before Coach Rivers helped him into superstardom, and Coach JVG re-abilitated Marcus! While they weren't in a Raps uniform anymore, they provided lots of quality & entertaining ball.

Glen Grunwald did an awsome job of turning around the direction of the team, and gets kudos for getting Vince, MoPete & Chris, among other good moves (though I think Chris was more Larry Tannenbaum's move). However, as good as he was in short-term building, he was equally bad in long-term planning. He gave Yogi Stewart a 6yr/$24M deal in summer 1999 (that same summer, he only gave Oak a 3yr/$18M deal), Stonehandio a 5yr/$60M deal in summer 2001 (to go w/all those other bad contracts that summer that fucked over our future thereafter; yet I single out this contract for a reason), and then signed Nate Huffman to IIRC a 3yr/$12M deal. All those guys were bigtime overpaid centers, and each had the same agent: Bill Duffy. Yet Glen fell for the same trick 3 freakin times with that one guy. It's like Bill blackmailed him into overpaying his centers 3x with a secret about him or something.

I thought Garbo & especially T.J. Ford brought alot of the same character & toughness that Oakley brought to us, and couldn't believe idiot Bryan got rid of both of them - in the same month at that. Shortly before that was when I began to fully realize that Bryan's on the take, as I've said before in a number of threads.

Oh man I used to love Chris Childs! I remember being in highschool watching him play for the Nets; he was an undrafted PG who'd be drilling 3's in guys faces, got after it on D, and thoroughly outplayed former 2nd overall pick Kenny Anderson (another no defense, low 40% shooting, 'score-1st, pass-maybe' overrated crap PG to match Damon Stoudemire & Nick Van Exel) and I was so happy when we got him! I even remember exactly where I was at my college when I found out about it! I thought the way how Raptor fans dismissed him after our 2002 playoffs was shortsighted, especially since he was our 2nd best player in game 5 & really our most consistent player in our series vs. Detroit.I was hoping we'd re-sign him. He was key in both our '01 & '02 playoff runs, and was key in the Knicks always besting the favoured Heat in the years prior to us getting him.

@ Acie When did Oak say that Butch would've led the Heat to the 2011 title? Did he mean it, or was it spoken simply to say something like Pippen comparing Lebitch to Jordan?

"You got to have accountable people on the bench. You have to have an accountable coach, assistants, management," Oakley said. "It starts with the coaches. At the end of the day, if the coaches ain't tough, the players are going to run right over them. The players are sensitive, you can't say nothing to them. I hate the game today, personally, as a coach."

That kind of coach is great with young teams that need discipline, but rarely pan out when dealing with a star-studded team where managing egos is just as big of a job as managing the game.

Oak is full of shit.

He was one of Butch Carter's loudest critics at the end of his Raptors tenure.

Also, in a game decided by 1, a missed layup and recovering a loose ball and trying to dribble it the length of the floor only to be stripped by Iverson were two crucial errors.

He was very much a wild card, and as much as I liked him, it felt like he had overstayed his welcome.
