Default NY Times: Raptors have too many specialists, not enough glue

Can The Raptors Turn It Around? - NYTimes.com

Quote:
The Toronto Raptors were a truly unfortunate team last season, plagued by performance deficiencies in virtually every facet of the game. Their league-worst defense turned the Air Canada Centre into a sanctuary for visiting teams, and the Raps’ offense was only slightly less hospitable. Overall, Toronto managed the fifth-worst efficiency differential in the entire N.B.A. last year, a mark truly representative of their failings in some of the game’s most crucial areas.

Yet the Raptors’ roster is filled with useful players, even if there is a serious dearth of high-level talent. That lack of proper star-level production would seem to present a problem in itself, but hardly more so than the seemingly disparate nature of Toronto’s capable cast. Considering the roster makeup of some of the average teams in both conferences, the lack of a true superstar is no longer an excuse for cellar-dwelling; the Raptors had enough individual angles of production to make a more substantial run last season, but simply lacked the capacity to translate singular skills into a meaningful collective product.

Or, put another way: although the Raptors had a number of capable pieces, virtually every player on the roster was a specialist with no systemic role on which to rely. The result was a taxing 60-loss season, one of the worst in franchise history.

Nice. I was pretty much saying that nauseatingly ad nauseam all last season. The mish mash of roles was, and pretty much still is, ridiculous.

Do you think this season will be better or worse?

I'm kinda curious what they mean by specialist in this context. Do they mean role players? If so, I'd agree with that one.

In terms of wins and losses, about the same. But that doesn't mean they can't make strides towards gaining some sense of an identity.

wondering the same, i don't see how we have specialists in anyway? specialists to me means 1-Dimensional but really good at that 1-Dimensional aspect

i don't see anyone on our team that's really that good at 1 part of the game, unless its demar at dunking????

So that says right in your face that we shouldn't go after more role players like SF defender or C rebounder

It's about the pieces fitting. We had a bunch of pieces that sort of fit, but just created a muddle ultimately. You have a guy like Reggie making up for Andrea's ability to rebound, but they weren't able to defend as a individuals or as a unit. You've got guys like Bayless and Barbosa playing too much as individuals. You've got athletic guys that want to run up and down the court, but too many quick shots lead to breaks for opposing teams. There was a group of players committed to defense, but were never allowed to assert themselves as a core that could provide an identity. Instead they were always tasked with trying to compensate for weak links, while the style of offense made that job that much more difficult. And then you had a group of players with an offensive mindset that ended up counteracting what those others players provided. Even a guy like JJ, committed to defense, would get sucked into trying to take his turn at sparking the offense. There was no balance, very little meshing, and too many guys left on an island with their individual skills.

You had guys that would prove effective in short stints, taking on roles that were just too big and not applicable to a team identity. Too many band aids, and not much sense of how to stop the wounds from opening up in the first place.
