Default Nuggets GM Masai Ujiri Granted Premission to Speak with Raptors about GM Position

Quote:
The Denver Nuggets have granted the Toronto Raptors permission to speak to the NBA's Executive of the Year, Masai Ujiri, and a meeting is expected to take place within the next 24 hours, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Masai Ujiri was named the NBA's Executive of the Year. (USA Today Sports)Unless Denver responds soon with a market-
value contract extension to keep its general manager, Ujiri is prepared to leave Denver for the chance to rebuild the Raptors organization, league sources said.

Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment CEO Tim Leiweke is aggressively pursuing Ujiri to become the Raptors' general manager and plans to present an offer that will pay him nearly $3 million annually over the course of a multiyear contract, league sources said.

Denver has long been reluctant to pay its top front-office executives market value, and current contract extension talks with Ujiri are believed to include figures that are nowhere near the commitment that Toronto's willing to make.

Ujiri's contract with the Nuggets expires on June 30 and it's possible an agreement can be struck that will allow him to leave sooner.

Ujiri is one of the NBA's lowest-paid general managers, making below $1 million a year.

Ujiri, 42, was the voted the 2013 NBA Executive of the Year and has emerged as one of the elite front-office minds in the league. Since leaving Toronto in 2010, Ujiri has done a masterful job reshaping the Nuggets into a Western Conference contender in a post-Carmelo Anthony era.

Toronto has stripped one of Ujiri's mentors, president Bryan Colangelo, of ultimate say on basketball matters but Colangelo will remain on the business of the Raptors' organization. Ujiri had been the assistant GM for the Raptors, and his hiring would be hailed in Canada as a signal that the franchise is serious about again becoming relevant in the NBA.
Y! SPORTS

Holy shit, $3 million a year on a possible 3-4 year deal.....say hello to our new GM everyone

More and more i'm hoping he comes here. Pritchard and others rumored don't interest me all that much. Nearly 3 million should do it too.

Ya, 3 Million is a fat chunk of change. Denver is by no means a "desirable" market anyways + they underpay their managers...time for this guy to come here, turn this team around and become a legend!

I say they make the announcement by monday

Denver is more desirable a market for a GM than Toronto imo. The only thing going in our favor here is he knows the city and likes it here.

Ya maybe before TL and new ownership arrived...this team is shifting gears, if we start winning, we are going to be on next levels...and if we don't start winning, we need to move the franchise the hell out of here lol

And nothing is more desirable then 3 million/year...Denver is at a high right now. As i said before, there is no way they sustain this level of play (finishing 3ed in the west). They already got blown out of the playoffs in the first round...the only way you can go when you at the top is down

For a GM, where do you think you have a better chance at getting players to sign......Denver (a 57 win team) or Toronto?

If the city makes much of a difference you probably shouldn't be looking to make millions of dollars.

To get a raise from 1 mill per to 3 mill per, you work in molten lava if you have to.

Denver's frugal nature is yet another reason why he will consider leaving. If TL was ACTUALLY serious about creating an NBA contender here in Toronto, who ever comes in as the new GM will most likely (within 1-2 years) be spending well into the Lux tax in order to build a contending team (if not that we wont be contending for shit, let alone a Championship).

So lets see, get paid less, to work with a team who is not willing to go into Lux tax territory, or set your self up for the rest of your life, while also going to a team thats looking to spend the money and build a real solid contender.

Lets not emphasize Denver strong regular finish too much this year because A. Denver got kicked out of the first round losing 4-2 with HC advantage and B. The west is experiencing a transition period with various teams that include Dallas, LA, and SA (SA less so cause there still bomb) all having to retool and restructure their teams because of their aging roster's

Also, there's one reason being a GM in the East is more attractive then the west, and thats simply because the east is a way 'softer' conference which makes it easier to make/finish high at the end of the regular season.

In their defense, Ujiri was 39 and a rookie GM when he signed that deal so that is probably not that far off from what most rookie GM's at that age would make. That being said they are known to be cheap. Good points too with regards to going into the luxury tax. Yeah if he's offered around 3mil/yr to come here i can't see him turning it down since i doubt Denver comes close to matching it.

Um ya... I bet so many NBA players ski.

And living in the north where its colder this year... no you wouldn't. Denver is not TO. And Denver doesn't sign any big UFAs either.

pretty exciting stuff. i wonder if he'll be able to join the team before the 30th of June so decisions can be made with the coaching staff before draft night

I would think that if he decides to take the job the Nuggets would allow him to leave early. Why would they keep him at that point.

i know they'd want to proceed without him if he's not going to stick, but he's also a big part of the nuggets draft strategy. they might not allow him to leave until there's a transition for the incoming general manager. it's not likely, but it's a possibility considering they have time and money invested in him and the scouting that's been on-going all season long.

so basically we're going back to what we had two years ago, the only difference we're paying more money for the same management team ...

BC + Ujiri + Maurizio + Ed = the fantastic four
