Exclamation New York Times: Turkoglu Becomes Toronto’s Expensive Distraction

Quote:
Sitting in the stands during summer league games in Las Vegas last year, Orlando General Manager Otis Smith made a simple statement, both boastful and honest.

“I’ve never lost a guy I’ve really wanted,” Smith said.

He spoke in regard to Hedo Turkoglu, the swingman who had just played a big part in helping the Magic reach the finals for the second time in franchise history. At the time, Turkoglu was set to opt out from the final season of his contract and become a free agent and Smith showed little to no interest in retaining him. Smith’s position seemed odd, given that in addition to center Dwight Howard, Turkoglu appeared to be one of the main reasons for Orlando’s spirited playoff run.

Instead, Turkoglu became the biggest catch in a relatively small free-agent pool.

After initially reaching an agreement with the Portland Trail Blazers, Turkoglu backed out and signed a similar five-year, $53 million deal with the Toronto Raptors.

It appears Smith’s reluctance in offering the now 31-year-old Turkoglu another long-term deal has been validated. Turkoglu is averaging only 11.8 points per game, his fewest since he joined the Magic in 2004-05 and developed into its offensive conduit. He is shooting 41 percent, the second-lowest percentage in his 10-year career.

otis smith is a jack, this guy helped you get to the finals hit big shots for you

and every opportunity he gets he trys to slam turk, not classy at all

and by the way just because he isn't playing well in toronto doesn't mean the magic not signing him back was a success

there is still the playoffs to be played

Reports of how much Orlando offered Turk to stay are conflicting. I've seen 4 yrs/$36 mill or 3 yrs/$24mill. I'm inclined to believe the latter based on Turk's own words:

Quote:
“(The Magic offered) a three-year deal for almost $24-million (US) and Toronto gave me five years and ($53)-million,” Turkoglu said.

Either way the Magic, who saw him day in and day out, valued Turk much lower than Portland and Toronto. And this for a guy who worked perfectly in the Magic system.

What an asshole - he's paying 36 million to Lewis +Carter, and he didn't want to give turkoglu 2 extra. He's overpaying massively for two players and only gets the success he has because he lucked out with van gundy, which wasn't his first option for head coach

he obviously wanted turkoglu too, since offered him a contract. We'll see how smart he looks two years from now, when he has to give Dwight a true salary ...

For saying that I hope we get to 7th and face Orlando in the first round; Hedo chug all those 3 at them like they never seen it before; that way we also can boo Carter when he comes back to ACC.

Whats more, he paid good money for Brandon Bass And "Martian" Gortat. Both barely seeing the court.

Yes actually a trade Gortat and Bass for Hedo & Beli would be good.

I was trying to say that Smith locks up good players even if team doesnt need them. So Hedo was clearly not one of them.
Toronto paying this money for Hedo is the price for having rest of the roster. Wright, Jack, Belli, Rasho all result of Hedo deal.

heh. I guess it's in vogue to hate on Turkoglu right now. That's fine. I hope he uses it as motivation and makes people eat their words.

He didn't say anything about not overpaying his players. He just didn't want Turkoglu anymore.

Secondly, if the Magic win the title, it will have all been worth it.

Except he did want him
he offered 8, didn't want to give more
I guess he only " really" wants the players he ends up getting.
I could have any woman I want, except I don't want any ... Same thing

He can't go any lower than this, or can he? I think he hit the rock bottom. There is only way up.

How can they win a title when they have VC? Just imagine VC playing against Kobe in the finals.

Otis Smith is a douchebag. He made the worst contract of all times by signing Rashard Lewis for 120M$ for 6 years. He must have really really really wanted him I guess.

Wait till D12 leaves Orlando Tragic. I wanna hear what the Smith will say.

Not a Turkoglu fan whatsoever, but going around trashing former players is how to lose respect as a general manager or coach in professional sports.
