The new display system will provide the Air Canada Centre, its Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Raptors fans with the most advanced video screens of any arena in Canada. The system will contain 17 new displays with the highlight, or pièce de résistance, being a four-sided 6mm “black package” LED main display.

The Air Canada Centre system will be the first in the NHL/NBA market to feature this new black package LED technology. The black package LED, which is available on Mitsubishi Electric’s 6mm, 4mm and 3mm displays, provides for superior contrast and black levels over existing white packaged LEDs that utilize standard contrast panels to help improve contrast and black levels. The black packaged LED allows the LED chip to be virtually unnoticeable and blend into the black face of the display.

The total cost of the new scoreboard was $8.3 Million

The scoreboard is not finished yet, but other reports indicate that the installation should be complete by August 1st.

Found a picture of it here, looks pretty sick.

Oh come on guys. Seriously, ONE comment on this?? This is actually pretty big news. You know that big cubed thing that you look at half the time you're watching a Raps/Leaf game at the ACC? Yeah well they're bringing it down and making a new and more hi-tech one. THAT'S BIG NEWS!!! :haha:

I read about this the other day. I love the fact that its going to be in high definition too. :dancing:

INSIDER 07-09-2008 10:48 AM

nice.....
8.3 million eh?

MangoKidHoops 07-09-2008 11:44 AM

Oh, so that's why they significantly jacked up the season ticket prices.

LX 07-09-2008 01:01 PM

The biggest part of this - it will probably help bring free agents here in the future. The money is always nice, but if you can bring the money and give them something nice to look up and see themselves on - now you're talking. I wouldn't doubt that this thing went in more for that reason than anything else.

Major 07-09-2008 01:04 PM

Good point LX, never thought of that. And that could REALLy help the Leafs especially :dancing:

Gurk 07-09-2008 01:06 PM

i would love for what LX said to happen that would be nice

If I'm not mistaken, Lebron James has already said any team looking to sign him in 2010 had best have their scoreboard technology up to date...

Next offseason they're updating the shot clock in hopes of attracting even more free agent interest!

LX 07-09-2008 02:24 PM

Lebron has that new scoreboard technology in his guest room. You're damn right he won't be settling for less.

MLSE actually bought this item from Lebron when he upgraded.

Maybe the new High resolution will help players see it actually WAS a foul and they can shut the fuck up now.

Gurk 07-09-2008 02:52 PM

lol:haha:

I don't know how much of a pull a "new spanking scoreboard" would have in terms of bringing free agents.
I'm pretty sure if I was a player, I wouldn't go to a city just because "their scoreboard looks great".

Considering Toronto has a hard time attracting free agents in the first place, I don't think a new scoreboard would help them THAT much in doing so.

I think the new scoreboard was to attract more fans and such. Give Leaf fans something to look at rather than their pitiful team. and LOL at them beating the Habs 5-2.

Glad to see your sarcasm detector is firing on all cylinders...

Oops...there I go again :haha:

Gurk 07-09-2008 06:20 PM

you guys are all funny
:haha:

LX 07-09-2008 06:35 PM

I wasn't actually being sarcastic. I mean will it make a difference attracting players? Who knows for sure? It could a little which is worth something. Winning means more for players and money might mean more than anything, but they also like their own images and their toys. Plenty of teams go overboard on their training facilities and such for the very purpose of creating a buzz about how great the franchise is with their players.

Do Maple Leaf fans need a scoreboard to be motivated to buy tix? Last time I checked they didn't even need a team with a chance in hell of winning anything for decades. Don't kid yourselves too much now - MLSE is not going to spend 8 mill for the benefit of the fans with nothing else in mind. It's all about proving to the people that matter most that they are not as bush league as many would rightly or wrongly suggest.

So the Raps need to win, they need to get a few dates on US tv, they need to get people all over the continent talking about them more, and they need players to think of Toronto as a real destination, with a cool scoreboard to act as a bit of an exclamation point, everytime they come to town.
