The NBA’s free agent signing period begins on Wednesday at midnight. This stage of the offseason gives teams their best chances to improve their rosters before the start of next year and gives players an opportunity to cash in on their past performances – both in the regular season and the playoffs (see: Hedo Turkoglu, Trevor Ariza).

But this year is no ordinary year for players on the open market. With the legendary free-agent class of 2009-10 looming, teams are going to be particularly cautious about the money they invest this year in hopes of landing a superstar next time around.

That is, of course, unless they already have a superstar.

Take a look at the Cavs. Fearful of losing LeBron James to New York or elsewhere next year, Cleveland went out and dealt for Shaquille O’Neal to prove to LeBron their commitment to winning. And with Shaq now in the fold, the Cavs are serious contenders to take home the NBA title next year — and to keep LeBron in the only pro jersey he’s ever worn.

The Raptors find themselves in a similar position. They have a franchise centerpiece in Chris Bosh, but he’s one of the many high profile players eligible for free agency next year. In order to retain him, Toronto is going to have to give him a reason to re-sign. In other words, the Raptors are going to have to make the playoffs – something they weren’t close to doing with a 33-49 record in 2008-09.

And that starts with re-signing Shawn Marion this offseason. At 31, Marion’s not quite the player he used to be, but he’s still a solid rebounder and No. 2 scoring option. Along with Bosh, Jose Calderon and recent draft pick DeMar DeRozan, the Raptors would have a formidable core with which to compete in the shallow Eastern Conference.

And the move would make sense for Marion, too. He benefits from a fast-paced offense and the presence of a true point guard — something the Raptors have in Calderon, who was fourth in the NBA with 8.9 assists per game last season. And with $21 million dollars between the Raptors’ current payroll and the luxury tax threshold, there’s more than enough leeway for Marion and Toronto to strike a deal that both sides would find fair.

In theory, Marion and the Raptors would be a perfect marriage. GM Bryan Colangelo said as much in Tuesday’s Toronto Star, emphasizing that both sides were motivated to get a contract done.

“[That he wants to come back is] the message from him, and the message we’ve given him is we want him back,” Colangelo told the paper. “He fits, he fits this roster.”

Of course, there are other options for both sides. The Raptors could go after another high-impact forward, such as Turkoglu or Lamar Odom, though it’s questionable as to whether they’d have the cap space to ink either one. The Raptors are only $9 million away from the salary cap, and while NBA teams can go over the cap to re-sign their own players, they are not afforded that luxury with free agents from other teams.

Meanwhile, Marion could be a fit with Chris Paul in New Orleans, provided that the Hornets are able to move Tyson Chandler and the $25 million he’s owed over the next two seasons. But even then, New Orleans might want to use that money to extend Paul and possibly make a run at next year’s free agent group, rather than settling on Marion.

So even though there are other fish in the sea, Marion and the Raptors should both be looking at each other with lustful eyes. How the courtship actually plays out is another issue.

As soon as Wednesday, we could find out whether this relationship has what it takes to make it long-term or if it was just a flash in the pan.

Wouldn't Bargnani be considered a big part of the Core? Especially ahead of 19yr old Derozan.

Overall though i agree. Marion is a great fit here and they should be able to get something done.

Yeah, I was just re-reading that part and thinking "Does this guy even know who Bargnani is?"

the shallow eastern conference probably has 3 of the top 4 teams in the league, and i find it funny ppl are already putting derozan down for serious contributions...

I realised that if we let him walk we lose MLE and BAE
Also end of season really showed that he fits here. We get a new SF, work starts all over again.
Ariza, Odom, Turkoglu, Artest are all good players, but won't fit as well imo.

Hear about that 50/5 offer to Hedo from Portland?

What happens if we sign Marion and Bosh leaves next season for free?

marion is a 2nd scoring option here???? Really? Is is THAT difficult to watch a few games before actually commenting on what we need?

marion was our 4th scoring option last season, most of his points were in the flow of the offense, almost never premeditated ...

but I agree that we should try to sign Marion. Assuming he has a solid season, even if Bosh leaves, his trade value would be higher than it is now, so we could get some picks for him if we decide to rebuild.
