NBA TV's David Alderidge - "Pat Riley seriously considering JO for Marion"

No link as it was on air statement, but confirmed by a number of people in the RealGM thread

Well we've all been questioning the possibility of Marion and here it is. IMO he wouldn't be much of a fit but I guess it'd be more about gunning for 2009 FAs. It's not the best class but we'd have the most room. Which might make more sense if BC thinks no FAs will choose Toronto in 2010. Also this gives us a chance to make Bosh happy earlier. Biggest names:

Boozer (no)
Millsap (no)
Iverson (guessing he stays in Detroit)
Ben Gordon (not unless we move Jose for a defensive PG, otherwise worst defensive backcourt in NBA. But not counting out)
Lamar Odom (I'd be happy with this)
Marvin Williams (my top guy)
Childress (would be nice complimentary piece)

I'm not happy about trading TJ/Rasho/1st for capspace, but at this point we couldn't have predicted how the JO thing would turn out, sometimes you have to bite the bullet

But my biggest opinion on this trade is the other pieces. If we get rid of Kapono in the process = good. If we take on Banks' contract = bad. Etc.

One more thing:

If it wasn't clear before, BC is a win now/win later simaltaneously GM. As are most, but it is in his job to help us win every year, rather than go all out for a chip run in a couple. It's likely a big concern to him to make sure we make the playoffs this year, even if we get owned. Money talks.

Let's do his. Then sign Marvin and Rasho next year. Make Bosh happy and willing to stay. We have got a team then

I think Marvin is an underrated asset right now. I'd like to see what he can do away from Joe Johnson's touches, could be a mini Devin Harris effect if we got REALLY lucky. He is only 22 after all. If we got him in the summer and still have like 10 mil for the rest I'd be pretty happy.

Just saw that episode of "the beat", and the trade looks very interesting.
I really think Marion could have a promising stint with the Raptors.

Marion playing with the Raps... wow, that would make me excited.

He is, like, JO overpaid and over his best form but he plays the position Raps need and that would keep Bosh, Jose and Bargnani in the starting lineup... it can only be a better team that it is right now.

Assuming for the sake of argument that it would be a straight-up JO for Marion deal, let's consider the PROS and CONS.

PROS
- Our starting lineup becomes stronger and more versatile with one of the best rebounders at the SF position in the league.
- We have good defence at the SF spot for much of the game between Marion and Moon.
- Marion becomes a solid mentor to Moon and Moon becomes Marion-lite off the bench.
- Marion is less injury prone than JO. There's still the risk that JO could hurt himself and be collecting 21 million dollars next year to sit at home while our team SUCKS. Marion, at worst, just isn't the super efficient scoring machine he once was but still helps us because he's better than what we have.
- Bargnani is given more time to develop and increase in value.
- The move is a bit of a shakeup and if a winning streak followed, it would create a new positive buzz around the team that they might be able to ride to the playoffs.
- Winning sooner is more fun for us, keeps Bosh happier and helps attract better free agents.
- We get an opportunity to see what a team with 4 quality starters looks like as opposed to just 3. This more balanced starting lineup gives us a better idea of what we'd like to acquire in free agency.
- Free agency in 2009 means we, the fans, get to feast on something a little earlier and in a slightly less competitive market with less on the line (Bosh).

CONS
- Is this the best deal available for O'neal?
- 2009 is significantly worse than 2010 for quality free agents.
- Reduced PF/C depth.
- A bit of a log-jam at the SF spot.
- We help a rival in our conference with a playoff spot get better by giving them a quality center.

I think the pros outweigh the negatives. I'd rather win sooner, take on less risk (injury prone O'neal), get into free agency with less headaches and try to put a better team on the floor that Bosh has a tough time saying no to in 2010.

For me swapping JO with Marion has no downside... at the present JO is not playing so his contribution to the Raps is as big as mine... actually mine is bigger since I give them money to go to ACC and JO is costing them a bundle each time he goes to ACC...

Raps with Bosh, Bargnani, Hump and Voskuhl are good at forward positions... add that, if match up dictates, Marion, Graham and even Moon can play minutes at 4 so I say they are great at forward positions.

Too many guys at 2 & 3 can be easy solved by trading some of them... have in mind with Marion BC doesn't have to get 'great guy' back he can opt for bad contract & draft pick instead.

Give them Kapono back, and give us someone worthwhile and I'll take it.

I'll take expiring contract and their 1st round pick for Kapono.

I'd do it...we'd get better at transition, defence, rebounding and scoring from the wing instantly...and he's exciting to watch. I like the idea of FA next year to appease Bosh as well.

But is settling for a weaker free agent class this year and sacrificing picking up a better player in 2010 worth appeasing Bosh for? I'm not so sure...

There is no way in hell that Marvin Williams would put us over the hump.

We need pieces that would fit our team here. Marion is a guy that can defend the 4 and 3 which is rare. So, i guess i would gun for him.

But even with cap space do Raps have realistic chances to land Wade or LeBron?

You really think we have a chance against those other 10 NBA teams that clearing cap space?

I think that 2010 free agents are being overrated, what IF Lebron, Bosh, Wade, Amare and other big names signed back with their teams?

Think about it, will be left with scrubs to sign. With the 2009 Free agents there barely any bidding, we can sign good role players, like Marvin Williams, Trevor Ariza, Artest to name the few.

This give us good chance to re-sign Bosh, if we can built a contender by 2009.

marion is a shell of his former self who has seen his production drop each of the last 3 years and he has become a malcontent that will be more of a negative on a mediocre Raptors team.

Could we get Lamar Odom? That dude is just 1 of a kind. 6'10'' PG skills.
Except for Magic Johnson maybe.

I agree but we are only giving JO for him... it's not that JO is cheap, young, happy going and yet to realize his potential...
