NBA releases statement in response to Tim Donaghy

Tim Donaghy: NBA Wants Nets, Not Raptors, To Face Heat In Next Round | NBA | NESN.com

Quote:

Donaghy, a former NBA referee who wrote a book outlining the ways he fixed games (for which he served 15 months in prison), said theleague*is pressuring referees*to favor the Brooklyn Nets over the Toronto Raptors for TV purposes. The winner advances to most likely play the Miami Heat, which is facing the Charlotte Bobcats in the first round.

“A Brooklyn-Miami matchup would bring great ratings, and that’s what this is all about for the NBA and the league offices — bringing in as many dollars as they can,” Donaghy said, according to FOX Sports. “It’s terrible for the fans (of) Toronto. They go and support that team, but they’re really going to have trouble moving on based on talent and what takes place on the floor when they’re really going against the refs and the league, along with the Nets.”

Quote:

While the NBA certainly would get better ratings from a Miami-Brooklyn matchup, it hasn’t exactly positioned the Nets in prime time so far. Game 1 tipped off at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, and Game 2 was broadcast on NBA TV, competing directly with Atlanta-Indiana on basic cable.

The NBA issued a statement in response: “Tim Donaghy is a convicted felon looking for any opportunity for people to listen to his baseless allegations. For Mr. Donaghy to continually try to challenge his former colleagues’ ethics is distasteful and says more about his own integrity than it could ever say about our referees, who are the best and most scrutinized game officials in the world.”

Let's hope as a reaction the NBA fixes the rest of the games in Toronto's favor, just to prove a point. :cookie:

As much as Donaghy is a lying sack of shit, I trust him more than the corporate lying sacks of shit that work for the NBA. The gambling on games he used to do when he reffed, is surely still being done today by NBA referees. It's like PEDS in baseball, players keep doing it until they get caught and it's no different with NBA refs giving an absurd amount of calls in a superstar's/certain team's favor or just purely betting on games they ref.

Some of the nba refs are far from the ''best game officials in the world''

rockthetdot 04-24-2014 10:02 AM

Great thread, you guys make me laugh, in a good way. I understand that basketball is hard to ref but sometimes I still feel that it is reffed very unfairly.

joey crawford is a terrible ref

They're actually the worst game officials in the world.

We haven't seen nothing yet ... :ref:

NBA is a business first and that's how they think. I don't think they rig games but maybe sometimes for the greater good of higher ratings, they influence the refs to help a certain team. Personally, I do believe silver wants the nets over us because of how they apprantly have a chance of beating the heat.

I bet NBA are very angry that they can't punish him for 'inappropriate statement' :mu:

I was about to quote that too haha. I think they are one of the worst officials in all of the main north american sports. However Game 1 was evident even though we played like crap. But at least in game 2 the refereeing seemed ok, though some questionable calls sitll

0nekhmer 04-24-2014 06:03 PM

I applaud him for getting the leagues attention for us :yeah:

Remember when the Bulls lost the first 2 games against the Knicks ?
what happened after that ?
The refs did their best to bring the Bulls back to the series untill they won. Jordan himself admited that Bulls have never had control of the series.

This NBA is pure business in every aspect. Davis Stern has fucked up this game big time, yes, big time.

If not for David Stern there would be no NBA.

Yea it's cause he treated the NBA as a business and made the best possible moves for the league to grow.

meh, I really like Stern as a businessman and he was a great visionary, but let's not overreact. The league would have survived the worst of commissioners, obviously they wouldn't be as successful, but bball is way too popular not to have some kind of success.

do you realize what shape the nba was in when he took over? it was not popular and had a horrible reputation.

Watching this series being refereed I wouldn't be surprised. :thud::angryfire::angryfire::angryfire:

Kriz 04-26-2014 02:09 AM

This shouldnt be a surprise. We live in a world were money is the priority to keep big business alive and the big guys will do anything to keep it alive and entertaining for the masses.

With that being said, this shouldnt stop the Raptors from playing well. The only way to win this series is play good offense and defense. We have no excuses for the past 2 lost games where the turn overs were on US. Not the refs. There will always be questionable calls but crying about it isnt going to change anything anyways.
