NBA referees

Suck balls.
Why every game are the refs against the toronto raptors. Like in charlotte, the only reason the bobcats were close is because the refs. Tonight boston had few offensive fouls. Golden state i remember the refs sucked ass. Like what is the deal here.

Jay 11-10-2008 10:20 PM

The refs didn't lose it for the Raptors tonight, but you're on the right track, there were some curious calls tonight.

Gurk 11-10-2008 10:21 PM

So far in every raptor game I have come back to the post game thread and I was always pissed at the refs.

CB4 11-10-2008 10:22 PM

i never said they lost it for them tonight. I agree the raptors lost it themselves. But the referess certainly called the game in the celtics favour

Admiral 11-10-2008 10:25 PM

david stern must have used his ref fixing budget tonight
i can name so many fixed calls tonight
the mysterious changed call when bosh took the charge
when JO took that charge and it was like 1 of the easiest charge calls to make and they called it a block
when JO made the clear block right in front of the ref and he called it a foul
when KG should've gotten a technical for taunting jose all the way down the court
thats 4 calls in some of the more critical moments in the game when teams were making runs

N64 11-10-2008 10:26 PM

Ya man wtf?...remember when they called a charge on Allen late in the 4th and like 5 seconds later when everyone walks away, they call it a defensive foul and Allen gets the free throws?

FCK THE REFS...guess more betting is going on.

Admiral 11-10-2008 10:28 PM

i bet tim donaghy probably didn't even fix games for betting
he just got caught fixing games for david stern and the nba switched it to betting on games to hide the fact that all the refs are fixing games for david stern

KG told them to change it..... and they did! fuckin' priceless. gotta love bein' a star.

The other one was when KG insisted that they should count the basket early on after a foul call...... never should have been a goal-tend.

CB4 11-10-2008 10:36 PM

i actually think it is fixed now.

EggsToTheBBQ 11-10-2008 10:37 PM

They keep the games close and protect the stars. It's been that way for ever.

I remeber, he started yelling at the refs and they changed the call

This thread is garbage. Has anyone here ever tried refereeing a sport? I've umped baseball games, I've refereed flag football games, called lines for volleyball, but basketball - hands down - is easily the hardest sport I have ever had to call. I referee elementary school basketball one night a week, and I find THAT a challenge - I can't even imagine how hard it must be for NBA referees to call what is probably one of the fastest paced games in the world. And as hard as it is, I think NBA refs call the highest quality game out of refs in all sports. It's very rare that referees will single-handedly decide the outcome of the game - it's just that they're probably the easiest party to throw blame at aside from the team itself.

You need to have respect for these guys - the refs don't kill the Raptors, the Raptors kill themselves.

While I agree with all that you are saying.... it doesn't exonerate these guys from the star-calls that this league has been witnessing for years.

Do you ever change the initial call after it's made because you're intimidated by the players on the team you called it against?

EggsToTheBBQ 11-11-2008 12:16 AM

NBA officiating is notorious.

Basketball is definitely extremely hard to ref, no doubt. One of the toughest parts is that there is so much opinion involved. Did he have his feet set? Was the offensive player out of control? Whose of the 4 pairs of hands that touched the ball last simultaneously are you giving the ball to?

It's because of this that NBA refereeing can be consistently manipulated for or against certain players, or organizations, for years without anyone noticing. I heard that Tim Donaghy (don't know how to spell it) bet on over 100 games in a row that he refereed without losing. Over 100. How does ONE ref do that? They don't. They're told to fix the game, that's why he knew the winners.

Maybe I'm a conspiracy theorist, maybe I'm taking things too far, but this is the only explanation I've come up with.

The only one I was really upset about was the KG change on a charge. That was kind of embarrassing. He makes a little noise and all of a sudden the call is changed? Bah.

Happened twice.

So blatant. I'm surprised Sam wasn't more upset.

Sure the games are fixed, but you have to play better than the refs and the opposing team to win.

You really believe that?

Sometimes I dont think its as much star calls as it is the refs getting caught up in the atmosphere of the game, thus most of the time the home team getting the majority of the favoritism with the calls. Momentum and aggressiveness plays a huge role in how they call the game especially late, and the more aggressive team gets the calls which sort of works itself out. Though I do agree there were a lot of questionable calls especially at the start of the 4th, the refereeing wasnt all that bad tonight besides that 3-4 min stretch. If we were the aggressors we would have won.

Besides the refs getting caught up in the atmosphere, the main thing that pisses me off with them is when they anticipate a call or call a foul after a shot is missed and there was contact, but if the shot went in they wouldnt have called anything. This started happening regularly in the 2003 season from what I remember and hasnt stopped since and its absolutely ridiculous.

EggsToTheBBQ 11-11-2008 02:18 AM

Did you suspect a fix:

When Cleveland won the lottery in LBJ's draft year?

When Toronto won the lottery in Bargnani's draft year?
(Or in BC's first year...)

When the Lakers and Celtics made it to the finals?

COMPLETE RUMOUR NO TRUTH WARNING:

I heard a story that Jordan was busted for betting on his own games, and his mid career "retirement" to go play baseball was actually a suspension.
