NBA Raptors Mid season report card

Toronto Raptors 2014 Midseason Report Card | NBA.com

Quote:

FRONT COURT C
Jonas Valanciunas hasn't developed as quickly as most would have hoped. Amir Johnson is still the ultimate glue guy up front. Terrence Ross has been inconsistent since replacing Rudy Gay in the starting lineup.

BACKCOURT B
After a strong start, DeMar DeRozan has cooled off, but his passing has improved steadily. Kyle Lowry has picked up some of the scoring slack and has arguably been the best point guard in the Eastern Conference.

DEFENSE A
After ranking in the bottom 10 on that end of the floor last season, the Raptors are a top-10 defensive team for just the second time in their history. In Lowry and Johnson, they have strong defenders outside and inside.

BENCH B
The Raptors have had one of the league's best benches since the Gay trade, with three (former) Kings -- Patrick Patterson, John Salmons and Greivis Vasquez -- leading the way. Salmons was a plus-110 in his first 19 games in Toronto.

COACHING B
Dwane Casey made a couple of brutal late-game decisions early in the season, but has his team in the top 10 defensively and led them on a 14-6 stretch after they rid themselves of their high-usage, low-efficiency "star."

Overall B

Summary

You're not supposed to lead your division with a .500 record, but that's where the Raptors were at the season's midway point. The futility of the rest of the Atlantic was the biggest factor, but it was trading their highest paid player that turned them from a mediocre team to a good one.

They improved on both ends of the floor after the Gay trade, putting the kibosh on additional shopping of Lowry and giving general manager Masai Ujiri little choice but to go forward with the team he has. Really, even if the Raptors traded Lowry, they'd have a hard time getting into Andrew Wiggins territory in this year's draft.

So Casey gets to keep coaching a roster he can make use of, and Ujiri will still have cap space to work with in the summer. The Raptors are still a few rungs below the best teams in the league, but they've given their fans something to cheer about for the first time in a long time.

I was going to say the same thing. We have 1 of the top 5 starting backcourts in the NBA now, so I don't understand the B rating.

He has no clue.

I think the coaching B is generous too. Solid C since he gets an F for the first quarter and a B for the 2nd quarter.

Well to be fair on the writer this was all based from the start of the season to Jan 20th so everything that happened the last 2 weeks isn't accounted for though I would think the Bobcats deserve a higher grade than the Jazz.

oh and thank you LX for editing my post makes it easier to read than my lazy copy and paste lol.

Amir has had a pretty underwhelming season, I dont know that you can say that he's "still the ultimate glue guy"

Admiral 02-03-2014 07:28 PM

actually, I'm pretty sure since the Rudy trade and the insertion of Ross into the starting lineup that Ross is actually the SG and Demar is the SF so saying Ross has been inconsistent in the front court is a mistake in itself
and I'm pretty sure most who know anything about the team are pretty satisfied with the way Jonas is developing
the back court cooling off thing is the biggest give away that they have zero clue about what is going on with this team, Demar cooling off??!! Last time I checked, he was heating up with like 40 point games and has been the best he's ever been since Rudy got traded

JoeyJoJo Shabbadu 02-03-2014 08:24 PM

Go figure... I always assumed Ross as the SF since thats usually who he guards.

LET'S GO RAPTORS!!!!! 02-03-2014 08:39 PM

+1

TR is practically always the SF.

R0b3rt 02-03-2014 08:51 PM

Wasn't it TR who guarded Durant when we won against the Thunder not too long ago?

No problem - it was a tough format to get to copy and paste well.

actually, Ross has been given the assignment to guard the PG a lot as he can use his size and length
besides, when you talk about positions its not who you're defending but where you're playing on the offense, defense is about the matchups not positions

Ya i disagree when it SF and SGs. Hes more often on the SF because the Sf is better than the PG or SG and DD defense is not as good as Ross. just my 2 cents.
