NBA Extremists - The All-O, No-D Toronto Raptors

Quote:
When Bryan Colangelo left the Phoenix Suns to become president and general manager of the Toronto Raptors during the 2005-06 season, there was an easy assumption that Colangelo was going to create :07 Seconds or Less North. It didn't happen. When the Raptors turned things around the following season, it was more with improvement on defense than on offense, and Toronto has never played at a fast pace since Colangelo's arrival. Yet in his fourth full year at the helm--and what I called in Pro Basketball Prospectus 2009-10 his first chance to put his full stamp on the Raptors, because of the departure of long-time head coach Sam Mitchell--Colangelo has put together a team that is in many ways more extreme than the Suns ever were.

It's been reported, most prominently by ESPN.com's John Hollinger (Insider only), that Toronto has posted the league's best Offensive Rating thus far, as well as its worst Defensive Rating. On its own, that's a mean feat, one accomplished just twice since the NBA-ABA merger and not in the last 25 years. (The Raptors' semi-dubious predecessors: the 1978-79 Houston Rockets and 1981-82 Denver Nuggets.) But saying the team merely has the best offense and worst defense in the league actually understates the magnitude of the kind of extremism we're seeing in Toronto. It's very early, but so far the Raptors have both the best offense and the worst defense since the merger, as measured by percentage above or below league average.

Extreme offense...
and thats without applying extreme tactics on offense, just casual play of talented players.
But extreme defense
While actually trying to do something about it... Unexplicable

Ya the gut feeling in me says please play some D but the fun kid inside me says just fire Jay Triano and Hire Doug Moe and just throw reality out the window.

Anyone with me?

Anyone old enough to know who Doug Moe is?

Makes you wonder how good this team could actually be if they even got their defense to "middle of the pack" quality.

I think they will.

And for the record, i wouldn't say No-D... more like minimal-D.

that implies a plan for minimal-D

They actually want to play semi-hard-D, but fail at it

How does John Hollinger calculate Offensive and Defensive rating? Is it some complex process no one else can understand?

For short stretches the Raps have shown they can lock in and get stops, which is why I'm hopeful they can create an identity on the defensive end and come around eventually. The chances of this team playing a full 48 minutes of defense on a consistent basis are slim, but if they can get stops when it counts then that's really all that matters.

If Triano is getting flack for his offensive schemes by anyway, he should also be called the greatest genious of offensive schemes in the league.

Is he either way? probably not. The players play offence and defence, and I think Jay has done a pretty good job. But to people who rip Jay on his defensive schemes and blame it on the coaching staff, but then the offence is going because we have talented players doesn't make sense.

I just had a revelation.

Maybe our Bad Drating and tough schedule are connected? We played against really good teams that just know how to pick apart defenses. And thus deflating our rating.

Because I'm not seeing that this team is worse than two previous seasons.

I think the defense will improve. These guys are coming together well on offense quickly due to the lead guys executing very well and the great depth. The defense is something that is going to take more work. I have yet to see improvement but we're 15 games into a revamped roster. I'm willing to wait.

LOL, yeah, that's an accurate "revelation".

Look, we've had the 2nd toughest schedule in the league so far going by the last-season records of the teams we've played, and that doesn't take into account two West-coast trips and Phoenix playing much stronger than last season. We are one game below 0.500?! Unbelievably good for a team that's been put together anew over the summer, including 2 new starters, wouldn't you agree?!

Stop listening to the pundits. Sure, the D should be better, they should try harder, blah-blah - maybe they will or maybe they won't, but they are doing something right to be in the playoffs picture after the kind of sched they've been through. I say let them keep working on it and the pundits will revise their tune by the All-Star break.

Hollinger doesnt calculate it.

Hollinger calculates Per.

Dean Oliver created the stats as follows for offensive rating
Quote:
For teams, the foruma is: 100 x Pts / (Tm FGA + .04 x Tm FTA - 1.07 x (Tm ORB / (Tm ORB + Tm DRB)) x (Tm FGA - Tm FG) + Tm TO)[1]
The formula is: Offensive Rating = (Points Produced / Individual Possessions) x 100
and defensive rating is basically the reverse
