NBA.com: Toronto Raptors Preview

There's more substance to the preview (click link at bottom to read more) but I just chose to highlight their scouting report of the Raptors for this season.

* The addition of Jermaine OíNeal should help take some of the offensive burden off of Chris Bosh. The key will be to keep both of these players healthy. Both have missed numerous games the last two seasons with nagging injuries.

*The Raps relied too heavily on Jamario Moon last season and paid the price because they often were playing 4-on-5 on the offensive end.

* Jose Calderon is ready to take over as the starting point guard and if he can keep his assist-to-turnover ratio in the same neighborhood he did last year he will be looked on as the next Stockton/Nash point guard.

* Jason Kapono is still a tremendous threat to bring off the bench and isnít quite the defensive liability some would have you believe.

* Andrea Bargnani still has the potential to be one of the better Euro players in the league but only if Sam Mitchell backs off his "tough love" philosophy and bashing the kid every chance he gets.

*The Raptors still have a wealth of talent but until they come with a consistent defensive philosophy and effort they will underachieve.

I liked these last three points, as I agree with all three.

Kapono isn't a bad defender, and I have no idea why he is seen as such. Now he isn't a good one either, thats obvious, but the guy is extremely smart, and plays spot on positional defence, which, is absolutely imperative for a team to work well as a five man unit. Moon is great at the little things, and he is visually defending, meaning you can see his big blocks, the odd steals, the boards, however, he might not be so great as it pertains to position, and rotation, and understanding the unseen nuances of leading his man to a spot on the floor hi doesn't want to be, or denying him the ball. This isn't a knock on Moon, just there to point out that although Kapono doesn't provide the flashy stuff, he makes up for it with the text book stuff.

As for Bargnani, he can be good, and Mitchell can ride him hard, but he has to learn when to take the throttle off. I think you'll see a bit more tolerance this year.

Nice article. On a side note the EA NBA '09 season prediction had Miami winning the east and going to the finals... lol.

I wouldn't laugh, they have a decent if not very good team.

Have you been drinking?

Unproven player in Beasley (not gonna be a good pro-to much of a tweener)
No point guard
No center

Wade is awesome but he connot carry that team through the likes of Detroit, Boston, etc.

EDIT.
Marion and Beasley will compete for playing time. as well as Haslem.
Mabey they could go small with Beasley at the 4 and Haslem at 5 but still, their not that good.

EDIT 2

Four days into Miami Heat training camp, Michael Beasley is still learning the team's complicated play book and is far from the impact player everyone expects him to be.

That does make me laugh. They're a fringe team that will battle to get 8th spot and probably end up getting 9th-10th place.

They have no true PG,Beasley is going to be a good player starting next season. But beyond Wade/Marion/Haslem this team is quite thin.

Agree with the points in general, but the ones on Jason Kapono and Jamario Moon specifically. In another post I eluded to how much of a liability Jason Kapono is not on the defensive end, and how Jamario's liability on offense definitely outweighs what Kapono can't (or can) do on defense.

per 36
Kaps
FG% - 488
3FG% - 483
FTA - 1 @ (86%)
TRB-2.8
STL-0.8
BLK-0
AST-1.5
TO-1.4
Fouls-3.1
Points-13.6

per 36
Moon
FG% - 485
3FG% - 328
FTA - 1.4 @ (74%)
TRB-8.0
STL-1.3
BLK-1.8
AST-1.5
TO-.8
Fouls-1.9
Points-8.5

I have Bolded the mafor differences and the only thing statistically better that Kapono did was shoot threes and scored at a higher rate(after the allstar break Jamarios percentages increased dramatically 52%FG 34% 3FG% ).

Moons rebounding, steals, blocks, turnover rate and fouls committed were alot better than Kapono.

I agree that Kaps is not as big a liability on the defensive end as people think and his deficiencies can be masked, but to say his shortcoming on defense is less than the shortcoming of Moon on offense is false.

Look at this simulated season for the NBA:
http://www.nba.com/preview2008/easim.html
It has Miami going to the finals as the #1 seed in the EC
It is a bad simulation

When you have 20pt players in post, 2nd tier scorers in guards, do you really need a scorer in SF?

These geniuses also have Chicago 4th, Orlando 6th, Raptors 7th, Charlotte 8th, and Philadelphia 11th. They also have Utah out of the playoffs, Yao Ming winning the MVP, and Kobe as the Defensive Player of the Year.
