NBA.com: Summer report card

Quote:

Frontcourt B: Jonas Valanciunas arrives with much fanfare, but the Raptors and their fans will need to stay patient. The Lithuanian big man is still just 20 years old and somewhat raw on both ends of the floor.
Quote:

Backcourt B: Kyle Lowry and Landry Fields aren't All-Stars, but they will both help this team right away, adding perimeter defense. It will be up to rookie Terrence Ross to provide some much-needed shooting.
Quote:

Defense B: Dwane Casey performed a minor miracle last season, turning the worst defensive team in the league into a squad that could actually get some consistent stops. Next project: Valanciunas' pick-and-roll D.
Quote:

Bench C:There's potential for the Raptors to have a decent bench, but it will depend on the development of Ross and Ed Davis, who was a disappointment in his second season last year.
Quote:

Coaching B: Casey's success with the Raptors' defense trumps his team's offensive struggles last season. But if the Raptors are going to move forward this year, they need to find a way to score.
Quote:

Overall Rating: B

The Raptors changed their culture and were the most improved defensive team in the league last season. Now, it's time to add some talent to the roster.
It's a slow process though. Valanciunas was drafted last year and is still just 20 years old. Lowry and Fields will help, but aren't going to make huge impacts. Ross and Davis need time. More moves will have to wait until next summer, when Jose Calderon comes off the books, unless another team is interested in his expiring deal.
For now, the Raptors are looking to take another step forward. Playoffs are probably a stretch, but it's not necessarily about the results. Player development is still priority No. 1, and this summer's moves aren't going to get in the way of that.

Not much to add to that really. Fair assessment.

Finally right?

i'd still say playoffs aren't a stretch. we'd be in the running for 8th. before the howard trade we'd be in the running for 6th.

carp 08-14-2012 06:08 PM

I like how he isn't hyping up Lowry as much as some have on here. Staying grounded is very nice, though hopefully we'll be able to see some young guys emerge this year beyond what should be reasonably expected.

Orlando got weaker and Philly stronger... what else changed?

I don't remember anyone saying he was an All-Star. There was one post expressing the thought that he could be an occasional selection. And this dude didn't watch all of 4 years of problematic defense, otherwise he'd probably be full of the "hype" himself. Grounded? Who amongst us hasn't been ground down to nothing at this point? I still think they need to know they have a sure-fire core in place, but damn, I'm hoping to see that by the time the trade deadline comes, one way or another, or else see some over-achievement that allows them until next summer. I expect to see a two-steps forward, one step back sort of season, but a lot more clarity. The possibility of any kind of clarity at this point excites me a great deal. Slam that as hype if you want, but it is not.

overall i'm satisfied with the moves that have been made this offseason, the only thing i'm somewhat disappointed in is that our SF upgrade was fields, i was hoping for more
but then i realize we're toronto so we can't expect any bigger names to sign here than that

Metallikid 08-14-2012 08:12 PM

I just can't wait to watch the Lakers come to town and make us look silly. :mischief:

you're in for a surprise. dwights gonna be held to 2 points, and 3 boards, fouling out in the third with JV dominating him. JV is gonna get 20 points, 15 rebounds, and will be the first person to get 12 blocks in one game. bargnani will score 50, and derozan scoring 42. fields will have 8 steals, and lowry 20 assists, along with 10 rebounds, and 20 points. :mischief:

I think this is highest grade nba.com has given us in three years. :yeah: Something he said was interesting though, player development should be our number 1 priority. I don't see that with Casey at all, especially this season. Last season when we were supposed to be developing our guys yet we were gunning for the playoffs and the team hardly developed, except JJ whose not even on the team. This year were going to be gunning for playoffs for real, I doubt player development is going to be a priority at all which worries me.

I put his odds to make it to the all star season this year at 50-50

Doesn't necesserily mean he can develop them, although it's a good sign.
