Luckily for Amir, and for the free agent market in general, actual GM's do those things. Okafor is pretty useless and he makes 14M. Nene makes 13M. Ibaka 12M, West 12M, Humphries 12M, Noah 11M, Jordan 11M, McGee 11M, Splitter 10M, Millsap 10M, Varejao 9M, Biedrins 9M, Perkins 9M, Asik 8M, Anderson 8M, Ilyasova 8M, Gortat 8M. Why does 9M for Amir seem so crazy?
Its not crazy. He lead the league in fg% for a long time this year until he was hurt. Some people just forget how good he is/was when healthy. And big men get hurt a lot and its not just Amir.

the problem with 9M offers is that you need 9M in cap space AND a need for a big man. So it's a bit more complicated, it depends on the year, how many teams have cap space (this year there will be tons, some years there are only 5-6 teams who even have that kind of space). In terms of worth, he is obviously worth 9M, probably not much more though. He's an above average defender, below average on offense but with outstanding efficiency. And he's a big man, therefore comes at a premium. If the average player gets 7 in this league, amir is worth 9 imo.

also, when people give examples, remember that to judge someone's worth, it's pointless to look at the bad contracts given around the league and when estimating how big of an offer amir may get, you should ONLY look at the crazy bad deals.

Just because humphries got 12M, doesn't mean any mediocre big man deserves 12. However, it does mean that there will potentially be a bad GM willing to give Amir 12, which is all it takes to set the market price ...

IMO he's about where he should be at 7mil/yr (high end). Still say he's a MLE player most of the time, but at his best he's worth 7mil (look at 2012-13). A PF who doesn't get to the line, isn't a great rebounder, is a below average scorer and has a history of ankle issues. And the average salary in the NBA is around 5.5mil/yr.
