Default NBA.com Raptors Midseason Report Card

NBA.com: Raptors Midseason Report Card

Quote:
Front Court - B
Chris Bosh has been his usual All-Star self and Andrea Bargnani is showing consistency for the first time, but the Jermaine O'Neal gamble has not paid off.

Back Court - B
Jose Calderon is solid once again, but has battled a hamstring injury and the Raptors just don't get enough production from their wings.

Defense - D
Defense has always been a weakness in Toronto. This season is no exception. The perimeter defense is especially poor.

Bench - C
After a disappointing first season in Toronto, Jason Kapono has been more of a threat, but the backup point guards have been inconsistent and there's not much depth up front.

Coaching - D
The Raptors were underachieving for the second straight season, so Sam Mitchell was let go after 17 games. They haven't shown any improvement under Jay Triano.

Overall Grade - D

Summary
The Raptors thought that trading T.J. Ford for O'Neal would both eliminate their point guard controversy and give them more strength on their frontline. But O'Neal has missed 14 games so far and hasn't exactly returned to All-Star form when he has played.

On top of that, Calderon has missed 12 games and is just starting to get back to health. As a result, Bosh just doesn't get enough help on the offensive end to make up for the Raptors' defensive deficiencies.

Maybe the Raptors overachieved with their 47 wins and Atlantic Division title two seasons ago, raising expectations too high. Whether they did or not, now is the time for a realistic evaluation of where this team stands and what they need to do to move forward and to keep Bosh in Toronto in 2010. -- John Schuhmann

You might be right about that. I thought I saw it was newly prepared around All-Star break but I must be wrong. Sorry for the repost.

Based on role/expectations/play:

Jose C-, Ukic C
Parker C, Kapono D
Moon C-, Joey B-
Bosh B-, Humps N/A
JO B-, Bargs B-

Jose has really disappointed me this year with his inability to make the defence react and play him.

Parkers been inconsistant and asked to do too much.

Bosh has been a big disappointment since early in the year. Hes not going inside as much and hes not finishing inside as much when he does go there. Hes not as decisive and hes not making as many field goals. Hes not making quick passes out of the double teams and his judgement has been disappointing. His defence has improved but his leadership has been awful. I still like the guy and think he can do big things on a good team but hes proven hes not a franchise guy per se.

JO has been very good in stretches but he can be a blackhole a lot of the time and his conditioning reminds me of Boshs last year. I'm interested to see how he does on a good team in MIA this year or next year if the trade doesnt go down.

Bargs has been inconsistant but good lately. He needs to stay inside the fucking 3 pt line and then he wont be having these 33% games. I still think we should sell high with him.

In conclusion, we have a lot of good role players who are being asked to do too much due to the lack of premier talent on the team. BC and MLSE have stolen all season seat holders money this year.

PS, coaching - F

I love the fact that coaching gets a D and then in the next breath the article goes on to say how Jose and JO have missed a combined 26 games.

Not to beat a dead horse, but coaching has been an issue along with the players. From top to bottom this team has been a huge disappointment and at some point does require some type of shake up.

exactly.

Some people just need to stand back and take a look at things. Team fires a coach who is a game or two under .500. Only to then have the replacement sink another 10 or so games under .500. Injuries and all that aside... that won't reflect well on the coaching no matter what.

THAT'S the reason why we're having a lousy season. The couches in the lockerroom suck. The springs are jabbing guys in the thighs and back. Not good news (just kidding, Ivan )

All kidding aside, this team has underperformed (stating the obvious). We all had such high hopes.

Overall, this team's grade had to be a D-

I can't believe we got a C when it comes to the bench. The bench has been awful this year.

So what's the connection? Are you suppose to evaluate the coaching staff based on how many injuries you have on your team?
Both coaches (Sam&Jay) failed to implement a system that adjusts based on the opposite teams. Whatever Raptors wins is based on the solid effort from players (like a high shooting percentage night) not because a strategy is being applied. Raptors doesn't have alternative plays to close the games other than get the ball to CB4 and let him battle with all defenders. Even though Jay made some changes, those changes are not effective.
Maybe Raptors needs stability, we have to stop asking all team to be traded, specially the core guys (CB4/AB/Jose).
