NBA.com: Raptors aren't as bad as they seem

Quote:
5. Toronto: You know that old stereotype about foreigners and how they can't play defense? Well, the Raptors aren't exactly shattering that perception. Team United Nations is giving up points at a rate that's embarrassing for a playoff-contending team, and yes, despite the losing start, the Raptors will still be playoff contenders. Notice we didn't say "championship contenders" because, in addition to their lack of a certified A-list franchise player (Chris Bosh hasn't led his team anywhere special, unlike Kobe and LeBron and D-Wade), the Raptors will not go far without issuing a little more D. It's not that they haven't applied themselves on defense. They can't play defense.

But, please. Toronto will not finish under .500. There's too much variety on offense, too many decent veteran players to prevent a disaster from happening. Plus, Toronto will play the Knicks and Nets eight times. That helps.

Losing on the road to Dallas, San Antonio, Phoenix, Denver and Utah is no shame. Toronto will turn it around. No such guarantees for the defense, though.

I tend to agree with the analysis on Nba.com. We are not going to be a great defensive team, but we have the skills to be a playoff team easily. Our tough schedule makes the record look bad, but if we can consistently keep winning bad-decent teams (with the exception of Memphis we have so far), we will have a nice record in the end of the season. That wont mean we can win a playoff series, but its still improvement over last season.

I'd say that right now we are actually around 5-6th best team in the east. I think we have played agaisnt five teams in the east and only lost to Magic (twice). We have won three teams that are above us in standings. The bad record comes from losing to western team on the road. And outside Memphis all those losses came to quality teams.

THANK YOU POWELL!! I've felt this way the whole time. Those teams are getting far too much credit when the fact is they have had a fairly easy schedule with a couple of games being an exception. The Raps wins have been pretty impressive and the games that they did lose are all games that slipped away in the fourth. We are better then we are playing and it's nice hearing that we will be a playoff contending team especially from the U.S. Media. but Powell is dead on when it comes to D without it we will not get very far.

Milwaukee on the other hand hasn't played many good teams at all.

- ah - and he covered that too.

Milkaukee has played only 12 games versus 15 for the Raptors and 16 before they play the 13th game. Milwaukee has only won over one team the should have lost 2 Dallas and lost 3 to inferior teams like Minn. Plus they have had only one back to back which they lost.
Miami isn't a great team will be lucky to be 8th.
See Raptors no worse than 5th being in top 4 maybe a stretch but injuries to Boston might push them there.
So who will the pessimists hate tomorrow after the Indy game????

I think its still possible for the Rap's defense to improve, just like the Mavs. They used to call them the Allas Mavericks because they had no D and they changed that over the years even with a "soft European" franchise player.

I think the Raptors have the 2nd hardest start to the regular season so far. Figuring how many Playoff teams from last year they played etc. etc.

Every team gets surprised in a season and the Raptors are still on course to be an average joe blow team in the NBA.

Thats an easy thing to criticise

Im not criticising at all DVS, just pointing out that the argument against the Bucks is a bit bogus if were keeping toronto in that conversation.

Das all.
