Raptors NBA.com Midseason Report Cards

Front Court D:
Quote:
Andrea Bargnani was off to a strong start, but has missed 18 games with a calf injury. Amir Johnson and James Johnson have provided defense, but not much offensively.
Back Court C:
Quote:
Jose Calderon is having another efficient season, leading the league in assist/turnover ratio and shooting much better than he did last year. But DeMar DeRozan has been inconsistent.
Defense C+:
Quote:
After two straight seasons as the worst defensive team in the league, the Raptors have found a way to get stops under Dwane Casey. They're the third-most improved defensive team, behind Minnesota and New York.
Bench C:
Quote:
Leandro Barbosa, Jerryd Bayless and Linas Kleiza are all averaging double-figures off the bench, but none of the three has been all that efficient. They've combined to shoot just 41 percent.
Coaching B:
Quote:
Casey immediately began repairing the Raptors' biggest problem: defense. He'll need more talent to get them functioning offensively again.
Quote:
Overall Grade: D

Summary
The Raptors have started over. This season is about establishing a new system and new culture in Toronto, with wins and losses coming after player and team development on the priority list.
The future includes No. 5 pick Jonas Valanciunas and a 2012 lottery pick, as well as a handful of young players already in uniform. Two of those are DeRozan and Ed Davis, both just 22 years old.
DeRozan and Davis have had up and down seasons thus far. And for the sake of the Raptors' future, they need to show more consistency and progress over the next two months.

so...if you take out the B and the D, its all C's, yet the overall grade is D.

Nobody could ever accuse the folks over at NBA.com of beiung scientists!

I think pretty spot on except for defense and front court. Our defense is (as they say) much improved, and (in my opinion) is more than just a little above average, especially considering that our OppFG% is in the league's top ten. Obviously consistency is a problem, but for a young team, it's to be expected.

And I think they don't give Bargs enough credit in the front court. His play alone, while limited by injuries, had us off to a decent start and he was one of the best big men in the league. The rest of the guys haven't been getting killed in the post, which I think warrants a higher grade. None of our big men are studs (fingers crossed for ED), but someone's been stepping up and playing well pretty much every game; I think our rebound rate (we're dead even with opponents in the RPG category) attests to the fact that they're battling in the post.

Hard to argue with the overall grade, though. I wish they explained the methodology, specifically whether or not team expectations were considered in the grade.

Personally, the only things really disappointing me are Bargs' injury and the lack of effort against teams that we really should beat (Wiz x2, Bobcats). As much as Casey prides himself of toughness and effort, the team didn't show up for several games this season. I know that our talent level - especially with Bargs out - is so low that no team is really to be looked upon as 'inferior,' but it sucks to hear about effort in practice and see the team show up flat against a beatable opponent.

But coaching is irrelevant so the B has no impact on the overall score.

if the goal of the team this year is to start over, then how come the team grade is D, so they're doing a D grade of starting over????

for a congested and shortened season it seems quite long

it also doesn't make it easy when Bargs is out just because the way he plays ball its so different to watch,

also not having a rookie this year, it would have great to have jonas here especially wiht Bargs being injured, jonas could have had major development minutes

also watching demar derozan take bad shot after bad, glad to seem him turn it around because i couldn't take anymore of that demar

+1, exactly.

don't really know what more we could've done in terms of starting over, traded butler for durant maybe!? New coach has radically changed and improved our defence, most players are performing better than last season and showing an improved attitude and work ethic.

for starting over i would award us a B+

Way to harsh? Buddy, are team sucks large amounts of ass, and cant finish for their lives......if anything, this was not harsh enough....

But, I do think Casey deserves an A, our team is one step back of a Dleague team, so, cant really blame the guy when we have 0 (zero) scoring power.

we're not a great team, but saying we suck ass is ott. There have been quite a few performances this season where we played great (including games with important players missing,) and made me very hopeful for the future. And with that in mind, again, the score given was in the context of "starting over."

We are transitioning this season, waiting and hoping that more talent comes our way to continue the process. I don't know what more we can expect than some good performances and signs that we are improving, casey has been here 6 months.
