NBA.com: Former interim coaches make mark with own gameplan

Jay getting some pub from NBA.com

Quote:
Jay Triano, Toronto Raptors
Triano became the seventh coach in the franchise's 15 years when he replaced Sam Mitchell on Dec. 3 with Toronto holding an 8-9 record after a 39-point blowout to Denver. Though they finished the season 33-49, he guided the Raptors to a 9-4 mark in the season's final 13 games. He also was the coach as former No. 1 draft pick Andrea Bargnani elevated his game, finishing with career bests in points, rebounds, blocks, field-goal percentage and 3-point percentage.

"All the concepts from last year when I first came in are different," Triano said. "There were different players and a different team. We've had to learn, figure everybody out. What are our strengths? What are guys gonna do? Where are they gonna cut? We had to get everybody to buy in and try to be on the same page at defensive end as well.

"Last year the first six weeks I had the job last year, I don't think we had a day to practice except day before the game for six weeks. That made it tough."

After a rocky start that had the Raptors at 11-17 on Dec. 16, they have now won seven of their last eight and have got themselves back to .500 (18-18).

"Hopefully, we have turned a corner," said Triano. "I don't know if the top four (in the Eastern Conference) is attainable, but we're going for the top five."

I have never seen a coach complain more about a lack of practice time. It's his #1 go to excuse, well that and the schedule of course (which also plays into excuse #1).

At the same time, i'll withold ripping the guy since we're now doing pretty good. Still not a Triano fan by any stretch, but i'll leave it at that.

Are you ****ing kidding me? As a new coach, you need practise to get your team to do what you want them to do....it's no excuse. Most other coaches had training camps etc., but he came in and had to do his job on the fly.

No shit. And when you're a new coach and an off day is there at home.........practice time boys. This guy hates practices the day after a game. And imo, if the teams is sucking large like they often have under him......well i'll say like Jack Armstrong, a day off is earned. Perfect example is the loafs, didn't they just have back to back games.....and the next day Wilson is pissing and moaning and running the team through a rigorous practice. As it should be!

Leafs suck.

I strongly believe that Triano is an amazing coach.

Yes the leafs suck, and i love that fact. And so did we when we weren't practicing.

Amazing? Well, we certainly disagree on that front. But my point and i think you can agree with, is that in a six week span i guarantee you they had several oportunities to have practice, you mean to tell me they didn't have two straight days off in nearly 2 months?? Bullshit, as a new coach it's imparative that you make time for practice on certain days off. Like i said, a agreed with Jack Armstrong in November after Triano said we can't have a practice until December 21st, and Jack said, you have to be kidding me, a day off is earned, and they haven't earned it. This team supposedly didn't practice for a month (mid-Nov-Dec 21st)?? That is seriously stupid.

I'm pretty sure they had SOME practises, just not as many as he wanted...I remember when he came in we had 4 games in 5 nights or something...but your point is valid.

Why in the hell is he giving up on a top 4 seed? They just beat one of those, and aren't that far from them, and Atlanta looks like crap right now and any one of those teams could get beat up with injuries. I'm not impressed with settling for a 5th seed at this point. Better to not be specific at all.

That's what I thought too. Way to aim high Triano. I guess, on the other hand, if he proclaimed that the Raps are going all the way, I'd be pretty turned off too. But 4th is pretty realistic I have to say. And it carries a pretty desirable perk, home court advantage, so he couldve at least said something to the effect of putting us in the best position for the playoffs. JT just looks awkward on camera and doesn't seem like the most media-savvy guy...

i got agree with jeff on that one he does use it for execuses alot, and jay rarely had a gameplan, that whole idea of creating his own game plan started like 2 games ago. He actually in the beginning of the season played the team wrong and kept potential second stringers as garbage minute players. But as long as this team is winning against the likes of orlando im fyne with him.
