Not to mention that China owns most of Alberta's oil reserves now.

Do you have anything to substantiate that? If you're talking about the Petro deal, that's just one of many sites in operations in Alberta...A Chinese firm bought up 60% of one company. There was huge amounts of money changing hands in that deal but you saying most of Alberta's oil is incorrect. The government makes huge revenues off the oil and they're not selling off important infrastructure to private investors.

Did someone in this thread actually posted that if Toronto was wiped off the face of the map that the west would feel a pinch? Are you kidding me?BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan could and very well do live away from Ontario. We are productive provinces who gets less than 10% of the money the Federal Government doles out compared to Ontario because we don't need it.

Most of the people with the exceptions of Apollo have made the worst case for arguments I have ever seen. You guys talk about the west hating the east? JHC i lived in Ontario for 2 years and it severely packs the other way as well. They think all westerners are pot smoking hippies and you know how ignorant Ontario people are when they consider Manitoba the west? WTF its right next to your province!Ya it is west of you, but they consider it Western Canada. When geographically it would be central. Comes down to most Torontoites consider themselves the centre of the universe.

As far as the weather comparisons they are a joke as well. BC's climate kicks the crap out of TO's horribly humid summers and icy cold winters. And the rain crap does not fly either because while i was in Southern Ontario it rained more there than in Vancouver. I also have lived in Alberta and the only snow i seen in July cost 100$ a gram!

And JeffB I can honestly say I agree with you! Fort Erie and Port Colbourne are shit holes!

Comments like that gives the stupid stereo type legs. Oh you Torontonians think you're the Centre of the Universe. Whatever! Like it or not Toronto is the financial capital of this country, the largest most divers city in this country, and yes is hated by other pockets in this country for various reasons, especially places like Montreal & Vancouver. At the same time Alberta is the province that is expanding/growing the fastest and has really taken unbelieveable strides across the board over the last 20yrs. Also the most beautiful City in the country is probably Vancouver.

Alberta has vast oil reserves and last time I checked the price of oil is going up again.
no no... what i mean is they rely solely on one form of employment. Whats going to happen once the oil sands run out? you have huge amounts of urban sprawl in the form of housing subdivisions and all of a sudden there is no reason for people to live there because they have no job, they'd have to move elsewhere to find work. I'm not saying Alberta isn't pulling its weight, i'm just saying whenever the oil runs out, and that will be sooner rather than later, the province will be in a lot of trouble.

The long term planning has not been there, and now they either must bend over and take it up the arse from companies that want to suck up their resources while leaving a hellish mess behind, or suffer from losing the revenue flow they have used so foolishly as short term injections of "growth".
^I co-sign your second statement.

but as to the first bit...
Yes, historically that has been the case, but again, i have to bring up the issue of MONEY. Historically the government invests where it feels the money will be best put to use, so, naturally they put it in their two largest assets, Toronto and Montreal. I mean, yes there are more jobs in Toronto and Montreal, but come on man, people for the most part want to live in cities, or at least reasonably close to one, so why would the government invest in jobs in... say Thunder Bay, when they know they have a larger pool of people in major cities?

Oh yeah, you would obviously survive. But Toronto is the financial capital of Canada, if it were to vanish, there would be a few problems...
And again, you don't need money from Ottawa now, but Alberta will need it in our lifetime, once the oil runs out. Another thing you have to keep in mind is the enormous amount of foreign investment in Vancouver, which brings huge amounts of money that isn't readily available in Ontario and especially not available in Quebec, which are still better off than the Maritimes provinces.

Can't we all just get along and enjoy Canada as a whole and all that it has to offer?
