National Post: Raptors Mid-Season Report Card

Eric Koreen did his Raptors report card for the first half of the season. He's how he graded the team and its players:

Jay Triano
Coach
B- 8-15 since taking over for Sam Mitchell on Dec. 3. Has Raptors playing better defence, and has also defined players roles better than Mitchell did. Offence remains inconsistent, with the team not running as much as he would like. Rebounding still a significant problem.

Andrea Bargnani
Forward/Centre
GP 40 Pts 12.6 Reb 4.9 Asít 1.1
B Has improved defensively, and is averaging better than 22 points per game as a starter with OíNeal out of the lineup. Struggled in December, but part of that falls on the Raptors for briefly moving him to small forward.

Jermaine OíNeal
Centre
GP 28 Pts 14.0 Reb 7.3 Asít 1.6
C+ While providing solid interior defence, has been unable to shake injury woes. Showed offensive burst before injury late last month. Has not helped make the Raptors a good rebounding team.

Joey Graham
Forward
GP 37 Pts 6.4 Reb 3.3 Asít 0.6
B+ Has finally embraced role as energy forward, providing solid defence most nights. Runs the floor better than Torontoís other swingmen. Still has the occasional brain cramp.

Chris Bosh
Forward
GP 40 Pts 23.5 Reb 9.7 Asít 2.5
B+ Sandwiched a poor December between a great November and a very good January. Despite Bargnaniís improvement, the offence still goes through Bosh, who routinely draws double teams.

Jason Kapono
Guard
GP 39 Pts 8.2 Reb 2.0 Asít 1.8
C- Has remained an enigma in his second year as a Raptor. The sharpshooter is still too hesitant to shoot. Had a strong stretch after Sam Mitchell was fired in early December.

Jake Voskuhl
Centre
GP 12 Pts 1.7 Reb 2.0 Asít 0.3
C Mid-season replacement has been what the Raptors expected: a big body to guard leagueís legitimate centres. Is very foul happy.

Anthony Parker
Guard
GP 38 Pts 9.6 Reb 3.2 Asít 2.4
C Scoring and shooting percentages are down, and stress of defending leagueís explosive scorers is wearing on him. Rebounding is also down from last season, despite similar minutes.

Nathan Jawai
Forward/Centre
Inc. Rookie missed the entire first half because of a heart condition. Was only cleared to resume basketball-related activities late last month.

Will Solomon
Guard
GP 32 Pts 5.0 Reb 1.1 Asít 3.5
C+ Brought in to back up Calderon, he has been adequate at times, but looks lost at other times. Has shown poor shot selection.

Jose Calderon
Guard
GP 32 Pts 12.9 Reb 3.3 Asít 8.5
C+ Has been plagued by a hamstring injury in his first year as a full-time starter. Is still efficient, but his defensive holes, not to mention his conservative nature running the offence, have shown.

Jamario Moon
Forward
GP 39 Pts 7.2 Reb 4.4 Asít 1.2
C Has overcome an awful start by getting back to his run-and-defend niche. Takes too many three-pointers for a 31% shooter. Does not attack basket enough given his athleticism.

Roko Ukic
Guard
GP 31 Pts 4.6 Reb 1.0 Asít 2.0
B- At times, rookie has looked explosive. Runs fast break better than Calderon or Solomon. Jump shot still a disaster, but heís working on it.

yeah no kidding Rasam.

Perosnally I feel the following players deserve a failing grade:

Jamario Moon, Jason Kapono, Humphries.

Calderon, Solomon barely get a pass from me. I'm not knocking Jose at all because i know he's been injured, but if i look at his play this year (injury or no injury) and compare it to how he's performed in the past... then he's been pretty bad. Using a healthy Jose as the benchmark, he's been lousy this year.

Raptors get a D for dumb ass

How can you say the players have been average (C) or better than average.

This is a playoff team with more losses than the Bobcats

the ratings are pretty good actually. a team full of c's is going to lose most nights, and that's exactly what's happening. not awful, but not good enough to beat anyone consistently.

Actually 'trane makes a very good point/post. You are a better rational thinker than i am.

Still though, Moon should get an F.

I agree 98% with this report ... captures accurate every player except the coach (this is where the 2% goes)

How does Bargnani get a B? He completely sucked for most of the season.

How's that? His offense was horrible for one month, which was a month of turmoil and change. His defense did not suffer. Other than that he's been everything from solid to - well, super solid. I'd give him a B+.

How did he suck for most of the season? Well I'm not sure why, but didn't you watch him?

His head wasn't in the game for like the first 2 months of the season, and yes, his defense did suffer at times.

Oh and Jay Triano has destroyed the team's offense (though it hasn't been helped by Jose's injury). We were a far more efficient offensive team under SMitch.
