Default National Post: "The Matrix" Won't Save Raptors' Season

Another good read, this time from Bruce Arthur from the National Post who discusses that a deal with Miami really doesn't do much but give us cap room to work with this summer. Thinks that Hedo Turkoglu is someone that the Raptors should seriously pursue if we have that cap space to work with.

Thoughts?

After Steve Nash, Marion was the key to the Colangelo seven-seconds-or-less era in Phoenix. Even at 30, with his numbers in decline, he is one of the more versatile players in basketball.

"He's got a terrific athletic game, and does a lot of things," Nash said when asked about Marion on Sunday. "I would guess [Marion's decline in numbers is] probably the way they play."

That being said, as one long-time Marion-watcher puts it, "once his legs go, it's over." Marion has played nearly 27,000 NBA minutes, plus nearly another season in playoff games, and as gifted as he is, hops have an expiration date. The Matrix would be the best defender and most dependable wing on the roster within 30 seconds of walking through the door. He would make the Raptors better. But he is not necessarily a long-term solution.

Should the deal ever be completed, however, Marion might be a short-term solution, since part of Marion's appeal is that his US$17-million contract expires this summer. That would allow the Raptors to add a major piece this summer, since Toronto would be about US$14-million under the salary cap. Orlando's Hedo Turkoglu, a long-time Colangelo favourite, is expected to opt out of his contract, though he might be difficult to pry away from a contending team in a sunny climate.

(If you're looking for a significant small forward in free agency this summer, it's Turkoglu, Marion, or Ron Artest. And no, under no circumstances is Ron Artest a good idea on this team. Stop asking.)

Turkoglu would make Toronto's front line among the most skilled in the NBA; Marion would allow the Raptors to run more and defend better. Either way, they're better options that the duplication O'Neal offers, now that Andrea Bargnani has become a player. When you talk to Colangelo these days, he looks good: tanned, healthy, confident. But as someone once put it, you can bet that Colangelo is like a swan: Placid on the surface, and working away furiously underneath.

I sure hope BC's working...and ya if we could pick up Turkoglu in the offseason that would be so crzy...maybe seeing Obama in the white house one day becomes a lil more likely

I like Turk's game, but I don't think it would be a good idea in Toronto. While he has really improved on getting to the basket, he has far too many nights where he is cold and just keeps chucking it. On the other hand, when he's hot, look out, because he can run away with things. But in the end, the Raptors don't need another tall shooter.

I like it a lot because hedo and Marion along with Bosh caldy and Bargs = big tall killing machine
That is if the trade happens and Marion signs for less

I know Turkoglu very well as he is from my native country Türkiye. He is a down to earth guy and one of the best characters in the NBA. He is very talented. He might not look so sometimes but he makes the game look easy. He has the size and creates matchup problems. But he is not the best defender out there. Marion is a better defender than him. Turk can make a shot or dime in the last minute, something Raptors are missing but he won't be a total solution. Raptors are badly missing a guy who is tough and have leadership skills like Raja Bell and such.

I think we'll make the playoffs with our current roster w/ JO.

However, I think Marion's perimeter defence would improve our starting line-up and our chances to beat the C**tics.

The more I think about it, the more I realize that this season is likely done and we have to be put in a postion that allows us to succeed next season and for future seasons. Things that need to be done:

a. keep all draft picks to develop depth and assets

b. if we do decide to trade J.O. for Marion it gives us the ability to see two things:

-if this team plays better with a talented SF and shows improvement but doesn't have depth, we then know what the problem is and what needs to be addressed in the offseason

-can Jose, with an explosive wing, play an uptempo game. I have argued and a few others here have also, that Jose unwillingness to push the ball is due to not having the wingmen or wingmen he can trust. If Jose still plays the passive game with an explosive wing then maybe it should be examined that he too is expendable

This season imo, is done right now, but it can still be exciting times for experimentation and to really see how close or far this team really is.

nah, i'll pass.

people mistake this season's Artest with the Artest of season's past.
he is NOT the same player he used to be.
he cant hit a shot to save his life, and he takes WAY to many 3's, and his D isnt what it used to be, he's lost a step or two.
while he'll give you some emotion and effort, he isnt worth the hype anymore.

Which is exactly what this team needs. And he's an above average rebounder, on a above average rebounding team, their are only so many rebounds to go around. He gets after the ball, and he plays physical.

yes. yes it is. I've had that attitude for a while now.
For me, it's really all about Andrea right now.

What i find, is that we don't so much need to rebuild as much as we need to "re-tool". Lose the glut of bigmen and add what is needed. Keep the core as is though. A nice draft pick would DEFINATELY help the cause here.

Of course i like the Marion trade becuase it allows us to address the glaring needs one year sooner.
