Default National Post: If Marion Doesn't Stick, Deal Is A Bust

"I want the recognition," Marion told ESPN The Magazine less than two years ago, after making four all-star teams in eight seasons. "I feel I've done what it takes to get it, but for some reason it hasn't happened."

It was Toronto Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo who drafted Marion back in 1999 while in Phoenix, and it was Colangelo who re-acquired him from Miami last week. For the next 27 games, the Raptors will try to figure out how much they like Marion, and just as importantly, they will try to make him like Toronto. More importantly, maybe.

Whether Marion will remain a Raptor is a question that seems to be sitting in the background for now, which is fair enough since Marion was only acquired by the Raptors on Friday from Miami, and introduced to the local media Tuesday. It was not the most illuminating session; Marion is a doer, not a talker.

The key to this deal, however - which looks like a step forward, if perhaps only an incremental one - is whether Marion feels valued enough to re-sign here. Because if he vanishes, this trade could lose any magic it does have, and fast.

If Marion doesn't stick, neither will Bosh. We'll than have some significant cap space and some good quality pieces in return for Bosh, which should allow us to quickly and successfully rebuild.

Bosh is not bigger than the team, or BC.

Raps might have cap space in the future but if player perception of TO is bad... stars won't sign and they will have to overpay just to get a decent player.

If Marion doesn't stick around, I have a feeling we'll go after Turkoglu.

Raptors fans and in general Toronto media are very loud in expressing their feelings if they don't like somebody. If Marion fails to show up, he will receive a lot of criticism and eventually boos ... So, I don't see him long term unless some sort of divine God will change Marion or Toronto

If Marion doesn't play well, and doesn't re-sign, oh well. Everyone will view him as a fraud. Most people already do, but there are a lot that give him the benefit of the doubt (like me). We'll gladly take the cap space and go forward with it.

yeah, Marion has something to prove, imo. I hope he is smart enough to realize it.

glad i'm not the only one to have the inkling about the fans. the people at the Clips' or Grizzlies' arena don't boo their players like they way they do here.

True. Hopefully he signs here. Because after reading Jeff's thread about BC being on the fan it makse sense for him to sign here, at least in our perspective

His contract year started in Miami and they shipped him... what does that tell you?

Same thing I said in earlier threads....Marion wants people to bowdown to him. The reason he wanted out of Phoenix was because he was second fiddle to Nash. If you want off a winning team because you're not the focus....well, I guess that says a lot about the type of player you are.

proof please......cause I thought he wanted out because of Amare, not Nash.

Read Jack McCallum's book ":07 Seconds or Less" and some of the Phoenix papers at the time. I don't have the book in front of me to quote it, but there's a meeting between Marion and D'Antoni, Gentry, Iavaroni, D'Antoni's brother. Marion is complaining about the lack of respect he gets, and how they're always asking him to do more things. He complains he doesn't get treated the same as other players, and D'Antoni corrects him "You mean you don't get treated like Steve", to which Marion responded the affirmative. It's a pretty consistent storyline: A'Mare is lazy, Marion needs to be top dog, Nash wants to win but can't handle the abuse of the daily NBA grind.

That's roughly what it was.

Marion is a fast break player, and the Raptors are the worst fast break team in the league. If he averages over 15 points, I'll be shocked.
