National Post: BC corrections may save the dream

Quote:
Bryan Colangelo makes mistakes. Of course, we all make mistakes, but few of us have our mistakes trotted out in short pants 82 times a year, give or take the occasional bout with the flu. Since his splashy arrival in Toronto, Colangelo has been on a bit of a skid the past two or three years, ever in midstream. The horses have been changing, but the water has stayed much the same.

Well, maybe Monday was the day that starts Colangelo toward the right side of the river. He didnít build a championship team; he might not have even built a playoff team. Truth be told, he didnít do much other than to correct some of his more glaring errors in judgment.

But it looks like he fixed them good. The details were not all clear on Monday, and nothing was official. But it appears to be this: A three-team deal with Phoenix and Charlotte that ships out Hedo Turkoglu, Jose Calderon and Reggie Evans, essentially, for the skilled-but-erratic Boris Diaw, the speedy-but-dented Leandro Barbosa and reclamation-project-slash-extremely-fortuitous-contract Tyson Chandler.

On paper, it is a masterstroke. Itís a sea change, at least financially. Torontoís two worst contracts: Gone. Torontoís biggest headache? Desert-bound. Torontoís financial flexibility? Back on the table. Torontoís international flavour? Well, heís moving a Turk and a Spaniard and got back a Brazilian and a Frenchman. So, largely intact.

And the money? Well, Calderon and Turkoglu were owed a combined US$70-million over seven combined years; Diaw, Barbosa and Chandler are owed a maximum combined US$16-million after next season.

If this deal goes through ó and there were rumblings from league sources that it would not be completed until Tuesday, at the earliest, though nobody was suggesting it was on the verge of disintegration ó there are now two players still in Toronto who played for this team in 2008-09 ó Bargnani, and Marcus Banks. Thatís it.

Colangelo?s corrections may save the dream
