Exclamation Nash: VC's impact on Canadian basketball shouldn't be underestimated

Quote:
Right now interest and participation in the game in Canada is at an all-time high. While my friends and I grew up watching the NBA like a lot of Canadians, the arrival of the Toronto Raptors and the Vancouver Grizzlies brought the NBA and the game of basketball into more households across the country exponentially and with a new intimacy. The sport's visibility exploded, and with it so did interest, excitement and participation.

For six and a half years, much of Canada's young talent watched and fell in love with a flamboyant, human highlight film named Vince Carter. He inspired them nightly while playing for the home team Raptors. I think Vince's presence in our country shouldn't be underestimated. His charisma was incredibly powerful in attracting a Canadian audience to the game of basketball for a memorable period of time. More and more kids play basketball every year in Canada, and I think the NBA's arrival played a pivotal role in the game's growth. For six and a half years, much of Canada's young talent watched and fell in love with a flamboyant, human highlight film named Vince Carter. I agree 100%.

Canadians, and Raptor fans should acknowledge the immeasurable amount of relevance and popularity VC brought to not just Toronto, but Canada as a whole.

I'm sick of the sour "fans" who still boo him and have booed him.

It's not like vc did it on purpose, just a byproduct of his spectacular style. What he did do on purpose was the reason for the booing ...

The way vince faked injuries, gave up on the team, telling other team plays, etc. THAT'S why he gets booed, not because he didn't impact bball in Canada immensely, because he did. The generation of Canadian NBA players just now joining the league grew up watching Vince and looked up to him. And this has nothing to do with my tank wishes, but I think Wiggins could have an even greater effect on canada bball, especially if he was a raptor.

personally, I don't really have a huge issue with carter, it's not like he's the first player to coast, he was just stupid enough to admit it. What I mostly felt for Carter was pity, to see his unbelievable talent wasted.

but I do feel strongly that players that quit on their team, in whatever circumstance, like tmac, vince or bosh, need to be booed loudly just for the principle of it. All these players may have been right to quit on the franchise, but they also quit on the fans and that's just too selfish. They would be NOTHING without the fans, just some talented athletes - after all, how many great spear throwers make millions a year?

Fuck that. This team was competetive most of his time here and were a shot away from the ECF in 2001. Even when he left, we had just drafted Bosh. Imagine if VC had stayed and was on the 2006-07 Team. Let's face it, the guy bailed 18months after signing a massive extension.

I'm with Jeff here. Imagine if he was on the 06-07 team & with a later than first pick we selected Gay instead of AB? If Vince waited just a little longer success should have come...

Then I'll be sure to quit on the team just like he did, since thats what they would be promoting.

Yup its a tough one...Do you praise a guy for what he has accomplished, or shun him for quitting.

You can do both or either without retiring his jersey.

I'm not going to sit here and hate on the guy and/or boo him. But he does not deserve his number retired.

Having a number retired goes farther than stats and what you did with yourself. You have to have been devoted to the city the fans and that team.

Agreed 100%.

Anyone here think that ORL will retire D12's number when he's done?

I doubt it.

YHup and DH12 took them to a finals.

VC-1 playoff series.

In addition to the attitudes and idiocy they both displayed.

whatever he did for canadian bball is one thing, but he did a lot of damage to the raptors
maybe some no longer remember, but, as I recall, things were really ugly for a bit, Bosh was about to hit free agency and many were thinking he will bolt for sure and at least some were talking about the franchise folding.

He had NOTHING to do with your speculation about what Bosh WOULD DO, he wasn't in your head promoting your fears ... Ulmer, Feshuk and that 0 from the star were pushing that bullshit to sell stories and gain a flock of shithead fans.

Looks like it worked perfectly ...
